It’s been twenty years since we last saw George Romero drop a new flick in his "Dead" series, and now, just two years later, he’s already hitting us with a second one—which makes five total if you're counting.

"Night of the Living Dead" is the latest from that ultra cool old legend out of Pittsburgh, and it basically feels like he's breathing new life into the whole franchise. I guess the story takes place during the era of "Night of the Living Dead," following some college students who are filming an amateur movie somewhere in the woods—probably near Pittsburgh, most likely—when they suddenly get caught in the middle of this unknown epidemic that turns the dead into zombies.

Maybe all those AJ legends and Cleveland types can step aside for a second, because a real gritty little indie badass is coming to show everyone how a documentary-style horror film should actually look.

The movie hits theaters on February 15th (though I guess we'll have to see if it ever makes its way over here), and here is the trailer plus a little intro from Romero himself 😍 :

*I mean, honestly, reaching retirement age and deciding to start your own indie production house, rocking massive ashtrays, smoking a pack a day, and just making zombie movies... the guy really redefined what it means to "age with style." 😍

Oh man, just another pseudo-amateur quasi-documentary 🙄

Look, let's be real here—everything I've seen from Romero so far is basically the holy grail. 🙏

I mean, maybe this won't be any less sacred than the Bible, I guess. Perhaps our old man will finally show us all how you actually make those pseudo-amateur quasi-documentaries.

It is quite peculiar how four different films utilizing this "quasi-documentary" style were released within just a few months of each other:

1. [rec] - November 2007
2. Cloverfield - January 2008
3. Night of the Living Dead - February 2008
4. The Blair Witch Project - Spring 2008

Given that the remake of a very solid film [rec] is dropping this November, we are clearly facing an invasion of similar titles. I suspect that only Romero's film will actually have something meaningful to say; the rest seem purely designed for cheap thrills and jump scares.

A little while back, I sat down to watch Dawn of the Dead (2006)

It was... alright, I guess? Honestly, the handheld camera work drove me absolutely crazy—it was such a headache—but otherwise, I thought the film actually made sense. They stuck to the premise, which I appreciated. Mind you, the plot isn't exactly linear, so that might throw a few people off—it definitely left me feeling a bit disoriented at times... 🤷

Hey there. Honestly, this flick doesn't really bring anything groundbreaking to the table, but I think the whole reality survivalist concept fits into the plot pretty smoothly. It’s got a solid atmosphere—especially that hospital sequence—and a real sense of hopelessness. Plus, the directing is good, and you know, that classic Romero-style way of peeling back layers of the real world through a zombie story... it just kind of lifts it above all the other mediocre stuff out there. Personally, I think it works better than The Blair Witch Project. Definitely worth a watch.

MOVIE CONTENT:
A group of film students is out in the woods shooting a horror flick when they stumble upon actual corpses rising from the grave. Instead of running, they start filming the carnage, creating a bloody diary of chaos and everything they hold dear being torn apart.

Honestly, if I hadn't sat through this, I would have been convinced "No Country for Old Men" was the absolute worst movie of the year.

This thing isn't scary. It's practically a comedy...
Take the first encounter with a zombie—it's a sheriff, and one of the actors quips, "I don't think this guy is just looking for his registration and permit." 🤣
Then there's the scene with the zombie clown, the hospital zombie getting his eyes popped out by electric shock, the chasing through the woods while the guy just keeps filming instead of actually helping... all of this is supposed to be horror, but it ends up being laughably ridiculous.
The movie tries to critique government propaganda, but it's just a mess of rip-offs. It copies the found-footage style of Cloverfield, then leans into the vibe of Happening or I Am Legend.
But hey, what else can you expect from a movie that has an official MySpace page?
🙄
The comments on the YouTube trailer for this are full of praise. Clearly, those people were the only ones left unedited.

It's watchable, I guess, but nothing special. The characters just don't really grab you...

Just caught the trailer at the theater. The cinematography and camera work look killer.
Mixing comedy with horror has always been a signature move for Romero.
Gonna go rewatch Dawn of the Dead to get in the mood.

The trailer is the only thing about this whole mess that isn't garbage.

What a total snooze fest. The acting was completely lifeless—honestly, I can't believe they actually bothered filming this whole thing just to dump it onto YouTube. 🙄🙄

which reminds me,
given how many logical holes and massive blunders this movie is riddled with,
YouTube’s limits are such that they wouldn't even be able to host longer features like the ones these guys uploaded anyway.

I've come across several videos on YouTube that run much longer than ten minutes.

It was probably just some old Google Video link.
☕

Regarding those uploads...
The video can't be longer than 10 minutes or over 1024 MB.

Actually, no. You can upload videos longer than 10 minutes on YouTube. It probably has something to do with how you set up your account initially.

Back in the day, if you signed up for a Director account, you could get unlimited video length. They don't offer that anymore, though those legacy users who joined the "Director" group back then still have that perk. Even back then, there was a 100MB limit, but nowadays those accounts are bumped up to 1024 MB (roughly 1GB). Here are the tiers:

So, that option is gone...
