$3k build ideas?

Hi there! I'm looking to pick up a PC that I can use for watching movies and playing some World of Tanks and FIFA...

Do you think this used setup is worth $310 for the price?

Or would it be better to just go with something brand new?

For World of Tanks, you really need strong single-thread performance—which means an Intel chip (Skylake has the best IPC) paired with a high clock speed is your best bet since the game relies heavily on a single core anyway. It'll handle FIFA just fine too.

That board only supports DDR3 🙂

The D3 label on an LGA 1151 board usually means it's limited to DDR3 😉

Maybe try an ASUS H110M-K D3 instead.

He might want to hold out for the Skylake Celeron (2.9GHz) models. They could end up being $83 significantly cheaper than the Pentiums—maybe around 80% of the cost—and historically, they aren't much slower than the Pentiums (only by about 15%). If he does that, he can dump the leftover cash into a high-quality case, like a Zalman Z3 (with USB 3.0, ATX support, three 12cm fans, and decent cable management...). Plus, he'll eventually upgrade to an i5 (maybe a Kaby Lake model) whenever he actually needs that extra horsepower down the road.

Honestly, I have no idea if this setup is better than your first one or not... As a total amateur, all I can see is that your graphics card is stronger, though the hard drive is smaller (I think it’s around 500 GB), and you have 8 GB of DDR3 instead of 4 GB of DDR4 (I don't really have an opinion on 😬). I'll probably skip commenting on the processor just so I don't embarrass myself 😁

The first setup is a bit more modern, and the processor is slightly faster, though the graphics cards are identical. The second one has 2GB of VRAM, but I guess that won't matter much for the games you play. Plus, that 2GB version is about 30-$13 more expensive.

Honestly, the main difference is just having 8GB versus 4GB of RAM. In the first configuration, the CPU and motherboard are a little pricier because they're newer (and marginally better), so there isn't enough left over to fit 8GB of RAM like in the other build.
