I need some urgent info on what this might be...
Just to be clear, I'm not a doctor, but this is an emergency.

When he coughs, he gets this sharp pain in his lungs that radiates to the right side of his back and spreads through his chest. He doesn't have a fever and isn't feeling weak, but he's literally gasping for air.

If anyone recognizes these symptoms, please let me know immediately.

Thanks

I recognize those symptoms—sounds like pleuritic pain to me. I can't give you an official diagnosis, though. And why isn't this person just heading to a doctor?

Pleuritic pain usually crops up during heavy coughing fits—think bronchitis, pneumonia, or even worse stuff—but it also shows up with pleural effusion or a pneumothorax. That last one can happen from a violent coughing spell if someone already has COPD, or even just in young, tall, skinny guys...

Without a physical exam and some X-rays, there’s no way to tell if we're looking at something life-threatening or something totally trivial.
