I'm Miroslav, and I've got a serious addiction to movies.
Specifically sci-fi stuff...
Why... I've wondered about that plenty of times... It started back when I was just a kid... those sci-fi stories just hooked me, and before I knew it, I was deep in the magic circle... couldn't stop myself... used to hit up the local library for anything sci-fi... watched whatever was on TV, didn't matter if it was trash or a masterpiece... I just had this... need for sci-fi... Nowadays, it's a bit easier... learned a thing or two from my mistakes... Now I only go for the high-quality stuff, real solid sci-fi... but yeah, still an addict and I'm not ashamed to say it... don't ever want to quit...
Anyway, gotta run... got an episode of Heros to catch...

Anyway, back to the point—I watch movies because... well, it's a deep subject... let me chew on that for a bit and I'll get back to you when I find a decent answer... 😉

This is ridiculous.
There are so many people hanging out here and this is such an interesting conversation.
Now everyone is just playing dumb and acting like they don't have an opinion.

I find myself watching things just because I have some downtime on my hands sometimes...
To be honest, I used to be glued to the TV constantly, until the realization hit me that it was all essentially the same old formula.
It’s always one of two extremes: either there's a happy ending, or there isn't.
But at the end of the day, there has to be some kind of narrative driving it all.
That's why I've found that documentaries are actually my absolute favorite...

We watch movies because we love them, but also because sometimes we just need to escape this reality and dive headfirst into a world of pure imagination. I remember when I was watching Harry Potter; I got so sucked into the story that I actually grabbed a marker and started trying to cast spells like I was Lord Voldemort, even pretending to fly on a broomstick and tossing things around the room—it was pretty ridiculous if I'm being honest. Or take when I watched The Lord of the Rings, where I ended up playing Aragorn, grabbing a stick and charging at imaginary orcs and goblins while screaming "For Gondor!" at the top of my lungs. That's just how I am; I get completely lost in the magic of cinema. And honestly, what does any of this have to do with a damn breakfast burrito?

I have a simple passion for cinema. I lose myself completely in the experience
It’s quite engaging
Much like reading novels, graphic novels, or newspapers... or even listening to music... all of these pursuits stem from the exact same motivation

I mean, isn't that exactly what Tomislav gotovac was getting at in PEEPING TOM... or am I totally off base here?

🤷 maybe

I'm not entirely sure what draws me in. I guess it's because they have this ability to stir up a massive wave of emotion inside me—the same way a great song or a really gripping book can hit you.

Honestly, questions like these give me the creeps. They’re always born from some kind of rushed, half-baked logic and usually end up being nothing more than pure scholasticism—you know, just endless, useless mental gymnastics that don't actually lead anywhere!

It is simply because we lack the discipline to sit down and actually read a book... 🙄

🙂

Well now...
Why don't you just sit down and write this out:
"I will think carefully before I post something foolish on this forum."
"I won't toss around words if I'm not entirely sure what they actually mean."
"I'll stop throwing every random adjective at a noun just because it sounds fancy..."
"I am going to finally learn how punctuation actually works."

Please repeat that entire exercise fifty times...

Why do we even watch movies?
So we can quote them.

Look, amidst a mountain of nonsense like "which three actors would you take to help you shake someone down?" or even "why do we watch movies," I don't really think my particular brand of cranky cynicism regarding the topic is such a massive pile of garbage...
Furthermore: I am perfectly certain about the definition of the word scholasticism. Beyond its role as a medieval philosophical science serving theology, it can be used figuratively to describe idle speculation—essentially, pointless theorizing. My writing style shouldn't be an issue (unless you’ve decided to go all out and blame me for the way I present things), because it has nothing to do with the subject matter itself. The delivery isn't the point. And as for punctuation? Fine, I'll learn; I promise!

@Anthony Kim18, I've been wanting to put you on ignore for ages, but I needed a personal reason to justify it, so here is that glorious moment arriving, because some of your little pieces of wisdom and fascist tendencies are just straight-up unforgivable... 😢

Movies offer us this perfect escape we all crave—getting to be an action hero, wielding superpowers, playing a brilliant detective, or just getting lost in a character's emotional journey until we feel like we’re actually part of the script itself.
Most people who have it all figured out don't even watch movies for themselves; they do it because everyone else is doing it, much like how plenty of folks decide to follow the NFL even if they aren't actually that into football...

Or, to put it simply, since we're social creatures, it's mostly just about fitting in better with the crowd.

p.s. Don't take this too seriously, though—it's just one tiny slice of the whole story.🙂

Feel free to continue the story. 😉
I wouldn't say everyone aspires to be an action hero; personally, I have zero interest in that. 😁
But yes, people often chase glamour for no reason, feeding into human fantasies—starting with adult films, 🤣for instance.

As for this idea about fulfilled people... hmm. What does it actually mean to be a fulfilled person? Emotionally? Is it just loving and being loved as much as you need? If most fulfilled people don't need movies, then what about those who are fulfilled yet still watch them? If they aren't just conformists, what exactly are they looking for in them? 🙄
I don't know anyone who follows the NFL without being genuinely interested. Personally, I am as socially integrated as society requires, which is why I don't follow it. I think you're underestimating fulfilled people. They aren't fools who feel compelled to do things just because everyone else is. It's not as if watching movies is some kind of moral imperative.

Just sitting here bingeing movies because, honestly... I'm pretty convinced I'm basically James Bond in my own head, haha...

We watch movies because we can't go out and film our own, and besides, it’s just fun—sometimes providing an emotional or cognitive experience.
