So, I've officially decided it's time to ditch my current primary care doctor.
Does anyone have any solid recommendations for doctors in Chicago?
Ideally somewhere downtown or maybe on the West Side.

First off, she isn't high-strung—she actually greets you with a smile. Honestly, before her, I saw a doctor who was—God help us—absolutely terrible. I had gallstones when I was 25; the pain was hell, but she wouldn't even believe me because I was supposedly "too young" for something like that. This doctor is the exact opposite. Also, she isn't like most of them—you walk in, they tell you what you have, then immediately say "next" like they're working an assembly line. She actually asks how you're doing. I don't know what else you want to know. She's a warm person and she helps. She’ll write you referrals, sick notes, give advice... just ask specifically what you need to know.

I was just over at the Community Health Center seeing Dr. Vjekoslava Amerl-Šakić—honestly, she’s hands down the best doctor out there. Always has a smile ready, super professional, and actually helpful when you need her most... I’ve been going to her for 20 years now, which, if you ask me, is probably enough of a recommendation for anyone.

Thanks so much for all the suggestions, though most of what I was actually looking for is stuff you guys have already mentioned 🙂 To be honest, the last time I had a primary care physician—which was maybe fifteen years ago now—it was just such a bad experience, and even the doctor I saw before her wasn't any better, really. They both seemed so completely uninterested in anything 👎 And I promise, I’m honestly not a complicated person at all 😕 I guess I just look for a little bit of attention, some actual focus, intelligence, and genuine compassion, and even then, I feel like I only find that about once every three years on average.

I’m on the lookout for a solid general practitioner around the Beverly Hills or Central Park areas—maybe somewhere near Broadway, Greek Avenue, or Central Park Boulevard.
I just moved to Chicago from Austria, so I’m still trying to wrap my head around how the healthcare system works here in America. Back in Austria, every clinic sign clearly states whether the doctor is public, private, or does both. That way, you know right away if you'll be footing the bill yourself or if insurance covers it.
How does it work in the States? Is it possible to find a doctor who runs a private practice but still accepts insurance, so it isn't outrageously expensive?😕

Every single specialist I've seen so far—dermatologists, gynecologists, you name it—has cost me a small fortune because I ended up seeing private practitioners. In Austria, even when visiting a private doctor, most of those services were covered by my insurance since they held government contracts.

So, I’ve started my own search for a new doctor—honestly, I just can't go back to the last one. My previous physician wouldn't even grant me medical leave when I was dealing with a nasty ear infection and sinus issues... she actually had the nerve to tell me that I could just sit at my desk and work through it, claiming I didn't need any time off 😕.. I mean, I was absolutely stunned...

Dr. Željko Letica at the local Community Health Center is absolutely the best, hands down. He’s always so warm and welcoming with that constant smile on his face, and he truly takes the time to listen to everything you have to say; isn't it rare to find such a genuinely great human being who is also an incredible physician?

Are you talking about Dr. Željko Letica over by the historic district? I'm actually looking for a doctor here in Chicago too, and I had such a great experience seeing him! If he's still practicing there, I'll definitely reach out!

I suppose I need to start looking for a new primary care physician myself. Up until now, I’ve been seeing someone over at the Kaiser Permanente clinic, and my nurse suggested I stick with this particular medical center just because they have on-site labs for bloodwork and access to certain specialists that other clinics lack. So, if I were to stay, does anyone happen to have a recommendation for a good doctor there?

Ideally, I'd like someone who isn't particularly irritable and doesn't get overly stingy with referrals or prescriptions. I tend to fall ill quite frequently, so I'd rather not spend my appointments arguing or having to plead for necessary care.

On a different note, regarding that community health center over in the suburbs—do they handle blood draws on-site, or is one required to head over to a major hospital like Mayo Clinic for that kind of thing? How is that usually handled?

Since that center is right in my neighborhood, it might actually be more practical to switch to a doctor closer to home if the quality is high. Does anyone know what that physician is like, and I wonder if she’s even accepting new patients this late in the year? My current doctor is retiring on December 15th, so I really need to have someone lined up by then.

You should definitely, absolutely look into Dr. Amy Koco over on 8th Avenue—I’ve been going to her for ages now and honestly, I can't say enough good things. She’s incredibly sharp, always staying on top of the latest training and certifications, plus she’s relatively young, which brings such a great energy to the practice. What I love most, though, is that you can actually talk to her—it feels less like a clinical interrogation and more like catching up with a friend. Her nurse, Ivanka, is also just fantastic. I’ve been a patient there for about 13 years now, and if I think back, I don't recall a single bad experience or even a minor hiccup.

She actually just moved into a newly renovated clinic over on 8th Avenue, still within the Folco area. It looks world-class—totally different from that old facility they used to have.

I think I’ve finally settled on the suburbs near Chicago, if that makes sense. If anyone happens to live out that way, I’d really appreciate it if you could share some more specifics—perhaps go a bit deeper than the general recommendations already posted...

I don't currently have a primary care physician, and I’m starting to feel a bit under the weather... though I suppose it might just be passing. I’m a little hesitant because I wouldn't want to make the wrong choice right out of the gate; if it turns out they aren't a good fit, how long am I stuck waiting before I can actually switch providers?
