Hey doctors! 🙂

So, look, I’ve had super sensitive eyes for as long as I can remember. My old primary care doctor—the one I’d been seeing forever—finally retired, and this new young lady took over. When she first saw me, she immediately goes, "Oh, you have blue eyes? Those are the absolute worst when it comes to sensitivity and inflammation." Like, wow, thanks for the unsolicited diagnosis, I guess? She basically assumed she knew my whole medical history just by looking at my eye color.

Anyway, like I was saying, my eyes have always been a massive pain in the neck. A couple of years ago, I went to LensCrafters to get my prescription checked, and they told me I was a zero in both eyes, which I totally expected because even though my vision felt fine, my eyes were constantly dealing with heavy discharge, wind sensitivity, redness, peeling skin on my eyelids, and eyelashes falling out all over the place.

Every time I visited my old doctor, he’d just hand me some Maxitrol drops and tell me everything would be fine. While I was actually using the drops, things like the redness, the peeling, and the gunkiness would definitely improve quite a bit. But the second I stopped using them? Boom. Everything would go right back to being a total mess.
Last time I saw him, he also gave me some Claritin because he suspected it might be an allergy thing. I took that too, but honestly, it didn't really do much for me.

So, leaning on this new doctor and her "fresh" expertise, I went back to see what she had to say about it all.

Basically, here’s the deal with my symptoms: I’m incredibly sensitive to the wind, my eyelids and eyes are constantly red, my eyelashes fall out daily (though they grow back just as fast so you don't really notice), my eyelid skin peels off—kind of like when you get a bad sunburn and that layer of skin starts flaking away—and there's heavy discharge even if I wash my face constantly. I mean, I was washing my face like five times a day, and I still had gunk sticking to the base of my lashes, which makes trying to clean it all out feel super clumsy, irritating, and just plain annoying.
When I mentioned the constant discharge to the doctor, she told me it wasn't an allergy, but some kind of inflammation or infection instead. Her logic was that if it were an allergy, my eyes would be irritated, but there wouldn't be any gunk.

So, she hands me the Maxitrol again (one drop, two or three times a day) and tells me to finish the whole bottle, and if things haven't improved by then, I should come back.
I've been using the drops for about 6, 7, maybe 8 days now. As far as the redness, the gunk, and the peeling eyelids go, things have actually cleared up and look pretty normal now. However, my eyes are still extremely sensitive to light and wind. I’ve even started using a separate hand towel and a separate face towel just to be safe.

The part that’s actually freaking me out, though, is that my vision is blurry. If I look at my computer monitor or anything within a meter of my face, it looks totally fine. The problem kicks in when I try to look at something about 1.5 to 2 meters away. For example, my coworker's monitor is about a meter and a half away from me, and the text on it is a complete blur; I can't make out a single word (not like I'm trying to spy on her or anything 🙂), and since she uses a black background with cyan text, the contrast is high enough that I should be able to see it easily. Even right now, I'm talking to a colleague who is three meters away, and everything is blurry, which just makes me feel stupid.

Since I’ve practically never had vision problems before, I am seriously worried. I don't want to lose my good eyesight. It’s funny how you don't realize how precious your sight is until it starts acting up.
The instructions for Maxitrol mention that blurred vision can be a side effect, so I'm hoping that's all it is, but I have no clue how long the blurriness lasts after you stop using the medication.

I also read somewhere that Maxitrol drops aren't necessarily the healthiest or best long-term solution, so I'm terrified I might be damaging my eyes with them and I'm seriously considering stopping the treatment. Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice?

One more thing: when I suddenly look into the distance, my vision is clear for like the first 200 milliseconds, and then—bam—it goes blurry. It's like it flashes into focus and then fades out. I'm scared.

Super detailed breakdown👍 but if you don't mind me asking, how old are you?😉
It sounds like you’ve already adjusted to your other issues, but this blurry vision thing and using Maxitrol drops is definitely new.
I know I'm preaching here, but honestly, go see an eye doctor. Even if your prescription doesn't change much over the next two years, getting a specialist's take is always smart. Speaking of prescriptions, I went from having perfect vision to needing +2 in just a few months. 👎
Obviously, that doesn't mean the same thing is going to happen to you.😉
Look, I'm no doctor, so let's wait until Sam Hall15 weighs in,😉 but if you ask me, it sounds like an accommodation issue, which would explain why things look fuzzy.
Anyway, I deal with something similar myself. I talked to my ophthalmologist and, plain and simple, it's just age catching up with me.🙄 Not exactly a medical breakthrough, but that's my experience.
For me, the blurriness lingers for a bit while my eyes try to adjust. It usually only lasts a few seconds, but it depends on a bunch of stuff—like whether it's day or night, the lighting, and those constant headaches I deal with that hit me at different intensities.
It's definitely not nothing, especially since I spend at least 14 hours a day staring at my monitor set to 1600x1200 resolution.🙄

Maxitrol is a potent blend of a strong corticosteroid and an antibiotic, so you shouldn't rely on it too heavily without guidance. These changes definitely suggest an inflammatory process, likely infectious; since the drops might be sustaining the infection, I believe getting a microbiological diagnosis wouldn't be a bad idea.
I also happen to agree with everything Charles Edwards8 said, naturally 😁 he really knows his stuff... if you follow his advice, you won't run into trouble.
You should certainly go get your prescription checked, as that probably isn't related to the drops, and while you're there, an ophthalmologist can give you their professional opinion regarding these eye issues.

I'm 24. That’s why I’m freaking out—I feel way too young to be struggling with blurry vision for anything more than 5 feet away.

By the way, I just graduated from MIT with a degree in Computer Science, which might be part of the problem: I spend basically my entire life glued to a screen at 1400x1050 resolution. But honestly, nothing feels too small on that setup, even on my 15.4" laptop screen, mostly because ever since I installed Vista, the default fonts are huge, which actually helps save my eyes a bit.

I think I'm gonna scale back on the Maxitrol for a bit to see if my vision can snap back to hawk-like precision.🙂

Thanks for all the advice, everyone.

Alright, here’s the latest update:

So, I swung by LensCrafters over in Senoin today. I’m specifically calling out the spot because those guys were incredibly nice, and honestly, the guy who did my eye exam was a total pro—he gave me so much solid advice that I’d highly recommend him to anyone needing a checkup.

But man, today was basically one of those massive mental breakdowns for me. Now, when I tell you what my prescription actually is, you're probably gonna laugh and think I'm losing my mind by talking about my "mental state," but I am serious—this is a genuine hit to my psyche. My brain just refuses to accept the reality that my vision isn't what it used to be. 😢 😢 🙂 🙂

Left eye is -0.25, right is -0.75. I know, I know, it’s not huge, but it’s eating me alive to the point where I’m just totally losing it right now.

Anyway, he explained that this isn't caused by the Maxitrol I was using for that infection, and while things might look a bit blurry for a little while after using the drops, it definitely shouldn't still be happening days after I stopped using them.

The sheer fact that I’m slowly going blind is absolutely killing me, 👎 😢 and the whole idea is just revolting. I feel pretty pathetic about the whole situation. I’ve had perfect vision my entire life and I was damn sure of it, especially since my last checkup about two years ago showed a perfect 0 in both eyes.

There it is.

Hey, I just wanted to reach out and tell you not to worry—you aren’t going to end up blind or anything.😳)

A few days ago, I actually found out my prescription was a -1.00 with a +0.75 in my right eye, and a -0.75 with a +0.25 in my left. Honestly, everything had been looking so blurry to me that I kept thinking, "There's no way it's actually this bad," but then I finally put on some glasses from LensCrafters and realized the picture on the TV wasn't terrible at all, and I could actually see the individual leaves and flowers on the trees clearly again...

I’m telling you this just so you feel a little less alone, because there are plenty of us dealing with the exact same thing. Now, if this really starts to bother you or if you feel like things are getting worse, I know of this one specialist who focuses entirely on reducing your dependency on glasses through specific eye exercises. He’s supposedly helped people who were nearly blind regain their sight. If you want, I can look into the details for you.😉

Maybe you should go get some blood work done? A coworker of mine dealt with something similar, and their GP sent them in for tests, only to find out their blood sugar was through the roof... anyway, I'm just crossing my fingers for you because I know how much eye issues can suck.

Thanks, everyone. I’m probably gonna head in for another checkup in a week or two just to get a second opinion from a different clinic, because honestly, I feel like my vision is actually getting better every single day. I don't know, maybe it's some kind of side effect from the General Mills stuff. Anyway, I'll be heading back for another exam in a few days.

Ladina and littlefoot, thanks for the suggestions. Hey, do you happen to know how long those treatments usually take with that specialist who does the prescription reductions? Does the timeframe depend on what your current prescription is? And does anyone else know anything about him?! 🙂

Best,
