It’s an official release from Metro film, so there's that. The quality should be decent enough, though I haven't actually pulled the trigger on the box set yet. They ran similar promotions before with sets for Almodovar and Kieslowski, if you recall. In those previous cases, they squeezed five films onto just three discs—which basically means they were being a bit stingy with the compression to save space. I'll let you know once I get my hands on the Miyazaki ones.😎

Honestly, it’s pretty wild and impressive... so far, I’ve only checked out the adventure of little Chihiro, and I’m actually loving it. Before this, I had such a huge aversion to Japanese films—I mean, all those Pokémon things and that whole Sailor Moon & crew just totally grossed me out😬. To me, they were just obnoxious cartoons with that awful, "pointy" looking character design..
+I'm starting to think Miyazaki is either some deeply troubled genius or maybe just on some heavy substances, because man, his imagination is running absolutely wild🙂

"Grave of the Fireflies" is not a Miyazaki film. It is far too grounded in reality and devastatingly bleak to be his work.

That's actually true. GotF was directed by Isao Takahata, who's another absolute legend at Studio Ghibli.

Usually, he and Miyazaki work as a duo—one directs while the other handles production or writes the script.

Does anyone know when Miyazaki's new film Ponyo will finally hit theaters here in the States? It was supposed to screen at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, but the producers blocked it—they were demanding a full American English dub first.

I honestly have no clue when a new one is coming out, nor did I even realize there was going to be a sequel.

So, I finally watched My Neighbor Totoro. I caught it about two years ago during the summer, and man, it was such a vibe. It doesn’t exactly have a massive, complex plot, but I didn't mind that at all. It’s the kind of thing you watch just to chill out and soak it in. There are definitely some creepy elements—you know, those black spirits and that weird cat-bus—but the characters' sense of childhood wonder turns everything into a great experience. It’s a fantastic animated film; I’d recommend it to anyone, especially on a sweltering summer afternoon.

It’s about time this thread got some life breathed back into it—PBS is starting his marathon today. They’re running them Mondays at 8 PM and reruns on Tuesdays at 4 PM. So far, they've got Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle, and Kiki's Delivery Service on the schedule. Hopefully, they don't stop there and keep the other titles coming.

Last night I caught Ponyo on PBS.

Does anyone happen to know where this fits into the lineup, and if they’re planning on showing more?

It’s on PBS this Monday. 8 PM. They’re showing Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind. It’s great. I’ve seen all of them, but I can always watch them again.

I feel like Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind was the last one.

Before Ponyo, we had Kika the witch, Howl's Moving Castle, and Princess Mononoke.

Forget it, I missed it last night... 🙂 I actually saw that one years ago, and while it's great, it doesn't quite hit like "Princess Mononoke" for me, and I haven't seen the others yet... 😢 But watching Mononoke was just perfect, I almost found myself tearing up... 😛 call me crazy... 😁

What kind of universe am I living in? I had no idea they had already released 3 and 4... 😕 🙂

So, at 4 PM today, they're basically just re-running Ponyo again.

Nausicaa is awesome, but I feel like they really need to show off Castle in the Sky and Totoro too—they should just bundle them all together!

I definitely agree—and I’d also throw "Porco Rosso" into the mix, along with basically everything else he’s ever touched. I realize I’m not being objective at all when it comes to Hayao Miyazaki; his films, for me—and I suspect for many others as well—cross some sort of threshold beyond just a standard movie-watching experience.

For me personally, it’s a kind of transcendence—this perfect fusion of top-tier artistic expression, profound ideas, and the very essence of animation itself. And when you add the fact that we share that same deep passion for flight and aircraft... well, I find myself falling a little bit harder for every single work this genius produces.🙂.

I would argue that "Porco Rosso" is an essential piece of his body of work; it’s where he first showcases that intense obsession with flying. Because of that, his upcoming film—which also centers on flight—might find it much easier to build upon that specific Miyazaki motif.

In the film, there are actually scenes depicting a coastline reminiscent of the Mediterranean when Porco flies over the sea while studying his maps—so, I suppose that earns him a few extra "patriotic points" on top of everything else.😁.

Porco Rosso is such a killer movie, though it’s been ages since I last watched it. Man, I’d love to catch it again if it ever pops up on TV...

Great movies for sure, but the series I grew up with? Future Boy Conan!!!!

So, I noticed Discovery film is gearing up to release his final masterpiece, "The Wind Rises," hitting theaters on April 14, 2014. I just haven't figured out which specific theaters are showing it yet.
