Movies that accidentally became classics?

Sometimes Hollywood producers just nail it—they set out to make a fun movie that turns a profit, and while it hits their targets, it ends up becoming an actual classic instead of just a passing trend.
Take, for example: Some Like It Hot

The Shawshank Redemption

1.Mad Max - they certainly didn't expect it to actually make it out of Australia.
2.Casablanca - this movie dealt with a mountain of issues before it ever hit theaters.

but man, for a minute there, people were actually losing their minds over The Blair Witch Project. LIKE, WHY, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD?

Marketing. The guys behind that movie flooded the internet with stories about this witch, trying to convince everyone she was real, while filming everything as if it were actual footage. Before the release, they leaked articles, creepy stories, photos, and fake news reports to trick people into believing the legend. Naive audiences bought tickets thinking they were seeing something real, only to end up watching a low-budget amateur production. It was all just a stunt.

I mean, I’ll give them this—they started off with a documentary, and honestly? It was actually pretty gripping.
But a full-blown feature film? c'mon man,
give me a break.

Honestly, the movie is decent—provided you approach it from the right angle—and I guess that means acknowledging it's really just a student exercise, which is how it works quite well. It’s incredibly obvious that it is merely an academic project, since the director completely neglected the script in favor of directing—specifically, building atmosphere—which they actually did quite brilliantly.

Just to add one thing—since the film was shot using handheld home cameras—it functions much better if you watch it at home on your TV rather than in a theater, at least in my opinion.

People complain about movies that are truly original—works produced without massive special effects, outside of a major studio, on a shoestring budget, and without any A-list stars. What more can you realistically expect from them? Isn't that how filmmaking is actually supposed to work?
