ruggedmarlin15 basically put into words everything I was thinking but didn't say out loud. To be honest, I had such a blast at the Sundance Film Festival that I completely lost my ability to act like a rational human being. When I said "hats off," I meant it as a genuine sign of respect and an admission that I agree with about 80% of what the author wrote. That’s why 🙂

ruggedmarlin15 basically just put into words the thoughts I was keeping tucked away in my brain. Honestly, I had such a blast at the Sundance Film Festival that I didn't really feel like being a rational human being for a while. When I say "hats off," I mean it—it's pure respect and I agree with about 80% of what the author wrote.

Fine.

From what I can gather by "reading" his comment, he’s mostly just belittling the "work and legacy" of Mr. Mirkovic by mocking media figures who don't mind letting their names be used for something actually useful. If I could do the same, why shouldn't I?

Beyond that, it feels like he’s just acting out of jealousy toward a crew that actually knows what they want and how to make it happen. And throwing shade at the attendees as an "argument" for the Festival being soulless? That's just cheap.

And finally, to be fair, now the issue is that tax dollars from "regional" taxpayers are being spent by a crew from some other "region." All I can say to that is—go ahead, act like a big shot, organize a rival festival, and you'll probably end up getting twice as much funding. It's ridiculous.

The whole thing reads like a blatant attack on a few capable people who actually know how to do their jobs and build something from nothing. Pretty shameful for someone calling themselves a progressive. 👎

Is it actually true that the Festival is shutting down and moving to Vis?

Who was actually there? Can someone give me a quick rundown of the events, the movies, or all the palace drama?

Everything went pretty smoothly overall. We hauled in a massive amount of gear, which kept the campsite setup easy enough. 😬.
Watched Kamikaze Pizzeria, Looking Left Looking Right, We Feed the World, Lovesick, Free Will, and Slumming... most were solid. The only exception was that grueling 166-minute stretch of Free Will—absolutely exhausting. 😱 I did dig the short films, though; they made for great intros before the main features. 😍

Turnout was lighter than last year, but honestly, I see that as a plus. 😁 It’s scorching out—typical. As for sleep? Practically non-existent.

Yeah. 🙂

Jose Miller17, I don't know all the ins and outs of everything that went down (other than the fact that there were just as many events as before, and they actually offered some stuff for an older, more mature crowd this year), and I only managed to step out after the rounds ended on the final night (and even then, it wasn't until four in the morning), but I can say this was easily the most laid-back festival in Motovun. No drama, no major headaches (except for the timing on that last night)... All in all, pretty good. The movies were mostly okay, though it feels like the programmer leans a bit toward the darker stuff (it was especially obvious last year). It’s a shame about The Road to Guantanamo getting canceled, but that was just out of everyone's control. Wristcutters (Kamikaze Pizzeria) actually took home the audience award, which wasn't really a surprise.

I'm still feeling a little incoherent, so feel free to ask me anything else...

P. S. Smoog, please tell me where you're hearing this stuff...

The news about shutting down was all over NBC—straight from the broadcast—but the rumor about moving things to Vis? That came from a friend who attended the Festival and stays in close contact with the organizers. I won't name names, though—don't want to cause him any trouble.

As far as I know, NBC is one of the sponsors for the Miami festival.

No, seriously. They read out who won the awards and then mentioned how the audience was left totally disappointed when the organizers announced this would be the final year for the Motovun Film Festival. Did they just make that up?😕

ruggedmarlin15 said:I'll definitely ask them.

Go ahead, ask. As for sponsorship—USA Today is their main sponsor, yet I read in the Saturday edition of USA Today that there wouldn't actually be a projection by Dukic on Broadway Tkalca—so I didn't bother going, only to find out later that it actually was happening. 😠

Unfortunately, yeah. The crew over at Sundance was totally blindsided by that kind of move from NBC.

Just ask. And regarding the sponsorship, "USA Today" is their main sponsor, and then I read in USA Today on Saturday that the projection on Broadway wasn't actually Dukic's, so I didn't bother going—only to find out later that it actually was. 😠

When they're being sloppy like that... you really should have checked the Broadway website. Everything was listed there.

Listen, I actually have a question for you, provided you promise to stay this incoherent. Honestly, I’m dying to know: whose brilliant idea was it to stage those fake scandals involving Darija and Nina? It’s such a "genius" move that I really need to know whose brain cooked that one up.

Respectfully yours.

And regarding Vis—since Rajko Grlic didn't get his way with the Vis situation near Motovun because the actual owners wanted it back... is he planning something new near the new pier? 😬

I honestly have no idea who actually came up with the whole scandal-driven stunt, but the short films documenting it were fantastic. The execution really went above and beyond what I expected. It’s crazy how many journalists fell for it, too...

Yeah, just wonderful! I don't get why this "revenge" on journalists is necessary when they treat the Sundance Film Festival like some endangered species they're trying to protect. Did those reporters really deserve to be targeted like this? 😲 😲 😲

And why is the website so poorly maintained? I'm looking at it right now, and the photos from last year look like they haven't been touched since then. There's probably a reason for that, isn't there? 😉 It's a complete joke!

Revenge? The organizers—and I think even on their official sites—have gone so far as to claim that the media was completely overwhelmed by negativity, but honestly, they’re just playing into that narrative. Journalists would be better off doing some actual due diligence before jumping to conclusions, nothing more (they certainly proved that during this year's Festival). I won't spend too much time complaining about the lack of depth in modern reporting; you really only need to glance at the headlines in any major US daily to see what I mean.

Honestly, I didn't realize someone in the press had actually fallen for one of those staged setups. 😕

A lot of people were laughing at those reporters at the Sundance Film Festival who were following the drama so closely, thinking they’d struck gold by being right in the middle of such a juicy scandal. It’s a shame they didn't get the full story until after everything was explained to them...

Seriously though, all these journalists seem to have a massive crush on the Sundance Film Festival. Why even bother feeding them hand-outs? That's my point.😉

I don't really buy into this idea that journalists have some kind of universal love for the Sundance Film Festival. Honestly, it feels like even the media outlets covering it weren't particularly fond of the event. I mean, they’re entitled to their own opinions, I won't argue with that.

What does "fond" even mean here? Shouldn't you be objective?

So what does "all these journalists love Sundance" actually mean?
