.. cooler weather is rolling in.. and I’m thinking about ditching my three weekly trips to the local gym and picking up a stationary bike or some similar equipment for home use instead. Look, I realize going to a fitness center is technically the "safer" way to exercise, but I have to make this change. Every time I work out, I sweat through my scalp, which inevitably triggers these massive headaches and colds. (And please, spare me the advice about just bringing a hairdryer along. I have quite a bit of hair, and drying it all takes forever)
So.. what do you guys suggest I buy? It could be something from Dick's Sporting Goods, but it doesn't have to be specific

Thanks a lot🙂

A home stationary bike paired with some dumbbells and similar gear for the anaerobic portion of the workout...

I’d honestly grab a rowing machine in a heartbeat, but man, those things are pricey at 4 $0.00.
Plus, you can stack a ton of different exercises on them regardless of the rowing itself.

Cycling is alright, I guess, but it just doesn't hit all the muscle groups.

So, what are you looking for?

I’m torn... I can't decide between a stationary bike or a treadmill. Honestly, the bike seems like the more practical choice since I actually have the space for it here.😁 I just haven't figured out which one makes more sense long-term. At the end of the day, I want to buy whatever will actually get me off the couch and moving.

Give an elliptical trainer a shot!
I’ve been using mine for a while now, and honestly, I couldn't be happier with the results.

You should head over to a local Dick's Sporting Goods and just test them out in person. That way, you can find the specific machine that feels most intuitive and actually makes the workout feel less like a chore and more like something you'll stick with.😉

I’m extremely happy with mine.

You can head down to a Dick's Sporting Goods and try out whatever feels right or keeps you most engaged while working out.😉

Just finished reading the threads on ellipticals... I think I'm going to pull the trigger and buy one.🙂🙂

Thanks, everyone.🙂

Give the treadmill a shot first

Personally, I’m a much bigger fan of the treadmill.
After hitting an elliptical, my legs feel like they’re made of lead,
and I just can't get my body temperature up enough.

That said, ellipticals are usually way cheaper 😉

Just make sure you can actually pivot while holding onto the handles—it makes things a hell of a lot easier. 👋

Bought an elliptical yesterday. Already put in two 30-minute sessions at medium resistance. If the intensity is too low, I feel like I'm just wasting my time. On the highest setting, though, I can barely last 10 minutes.😁

I’m really enjoying this piece of equipment, so I have to give steelpanther9 another quick thanks for the recommendation. Much appreciated.🙂

Does anyone know where I can pick up an elliptical trainer here in Washington, D.C., and what kind of price range am I looking at?

To be honest, if the resistance feels too light, the whole workout just feels pointless. But once I crank it up to the max, I can barely hang on for ten minutes before I'm spent.😁

I am absolutely loving this little piece of equipment, so I really have to give my thanks to steelpanther9 one more time for the recommendation. Seriously, thank you so much.🙂

Check Craigslist under the sporting goods section and you'll find plenty of ellipticals...

That's how I ended up with a Platinum model from a lady who clearly just used it as a dust collector. She probably didn't even use it for an hour, but even if she did... $167 it would have been fine for me.

There's always stuff like that out there... some woman buys one, loses interest immediately, and then her husband lists it online because it's taking up space in the living room. He isn't selling the wife, just the machine.

I saw a brand new elliptical at Walmart for about $233, and over at Target they had them for $950... it really depends on... well, you know, the specifics.

I picked up an elliptical trainer for $183 at Dick's Sporting Goods
and I'm pretty happy with it, even though it took me a good hour to get it all put together 🙂
it's actually a decent little machine; I just set it up right in front of the TV during The Simpsons and get to work 😁

I also hit the elliptical for 15 minutes every day. It’s a solid machine, but things get dicey when you crank up the resistance—my knees absolutely hate it. I just keep it on medium and pretend I'm actually running. Great.
