Ah, the early 90s—the golden age of raw capitalism! Those were the days.
We used to rent about six bootleg movies at a time from that sketchy local video shop, Niko. Even then, we’d be lucky to actually get through four tapes if it was a slow day and we actually had the patience for it. With three of those four, nobody could even tell what was happening on screen because the picture was too dark, no matter how much we messed with the TV settings. As for the last one, the video quality was just trashed; lines kept flickering across the screen because back then, we hadn't quite mastered the magic of the little "tracking" button.

So, is it really that strange that I showed zero interest in the movies coming out of the video store back then? Is it so odd that I never actually watched Conan on VHS?

There is a silver lining, though. For instance, I saw Star Wars for the first time during a theatrical re-release in the mid-90s, right before the Phantom Menace kicked off the new trilogy. I caught Conan II on TV for the first time, which I'm actually glad about, because I would have demanded a refund for that one. I eventually discovered Red Sonja on DivX, and I was lucky enough to snag Die Hard 3 from a video store a few years back (though they don't carry it anymore 😢). Ultimately, there's something to be said for watching films late; it allows an old classic to feel like a brand-new discovery rather than just something I've already seen. And when it comes to the bad movies, at least I save the money I would have wasted at the cinema.

Spot on.
When I was a kid, I actually preferred Conan II over the original. I was six years old at the time. Red Sonja was HAWT back then, which says a lot about my questionable taste.

Fast forward to about a year ago—I caught the movie again on PBS and ended up passing out halfway through.
The thing is a total snooze fest.

I'm asking 🙂 since I won't be home this Tuesday and will miss the broadcast, even though I have it on DVD and watched it recently. 😁 What do you think—should I just record it on video? 😬

Honestly, you never know what might happen to a disc. Go ahead and record it! It’s always better to be safe than sorry, right?

I am really looking forward to seeing what Gnn-ov has to say about this. Honestly, Conan the Barbarian stands out as one of those truly divine cinematic experiences I've ever had the pleasure of watching, and it’s just an absolutely stellar film overall.

By the way, those two jacked villains he coolly mows down at the end? They’re actual bodybuilders, just like Arnie—it's well known. The director wanted someone with enough muscle to actually stand a chance against Arnie, so Arnold himself suggested those two and a few others, but they were the ones who actually nailed the audition.

I’m kind of glad I got to prove my point yesterday:

Conan is easily one of the smartest (okay, maybe not *the* smartest, but definitely up there)
movies ever made😍

It just goes to show what happens when you pair a stubborn liberal with a total right-wing nutjob... if we actually applied that logic to running the country, maybe we’d finally see some progress

The movie does have some fascist undertones, which Roger Ebert actually pointed out in his old review; that whole Ničijevska vibe, this guy who just wants to destroy everything living, acting like a mirror for an Aryan superman who eventually kills off some dirty Black villain... but hey, that's really just surface-level stuff if you think about it...

I honestly love the dialogue in this thing (you won't find this much heavy philosophy anywhere else—the Matrix fans should probably just give up)
and all that blatant machismo it's oozing... honestly, for us guys, this movie is basically what A Woman's Hour is for women 😛

So yeah, it covers everything from growing up and love to finding purpose in life... basically everything you'll ever need to know

And of course, there's a moral to the story... which is how you have to deal with those mindless hippies before they take away our wives and kids and build a giant snake tower of death in every single American city😵
