Hi there!

After two weeks of pure frustration and digging through about a hundred different threads on various forums and sites, I'm finally posting here.
It seems I'm running into the exact same issue a ton of other people have regarding 5.1 surround sound.
For the last three years, I’ve been running Windows 7. My home theater system is hooked up to my PC via 5.1 speakers. I’ve reinstalled Windows at least five times over that period, and every single time, the audio worked perfectly—everything sounded phenomenal through all the speakers once I selected the stereo option on my home theater remote.
Then, two weeks ago, I did another clean install of Windows, and now I just can't get that 5.1 sound to work again. I’ve tried every driver under the sun and messed with every setting I could find in the posts I read, but nothing has helped. To be clear, I'm using a Realtek sound card and it's definitely working... If anyone knows of another workaround or if someone might be willing to help me out—maybe via TeamViewer or something similar—please let me know.
Music is a huge part of my life; I actually make my living from it, so I really want to get back to listening to it with the quality I had before.
THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

Really appreciate any help!

Look, if everything was running smooth before this, just double-check that all your cables are actually seated properly... even if they look plugged in, sometimes one might be sitting a little loose or just feeling kind of dirty, you know? Just give everything a quick once-over and make sure nothing is acting funky.

I actually tried that last night. I thought about pulling the RAM sticks out and reseating them too, but... well, same result.
I haven't touched them since the day I built this rig, so I guess it probably isn't the issue... I don't know...
Thanks anyway—though I'm still open to other suggestions

Could you clarify which speakers you're using?
I dealt with a nearly identical headache recently. No matter what I tweaked, I just couldn't get any sound—only two speakers would actually work! It turns out the solution was incredibly simple: I replaced the cables running from my home theater system to my PC, and ever since, everything has been working perfectly.

Man, I haven't even touched the cables.
There’s just one single cable going from the theater setup to the PC—it's just your standard green jack, the same kind used for basic desktop speakers... Maybe I should try a different connection method? Still, it feels weird to be troubleshooting when I haven't actually moved anything. Damn.

Which Motherboard are we talking about here? I need the manufacturer and the specific model.

So, the sound card is listed as a High Definition Audio Controller (no driver)

That's how the audio is described.

I guess I didn't really help much, did I?

Oh well...

Anyway, Windows 7 just automatically installs the HDAD 2.75 on my PC whenever I set it up.

hey, give this a shot and see if you can actually hear the test through all your speakers:

If you’re getting stereo sound instead of 5.1, then you aren't actually listening to 5.1. You're just hearing stereo through two speakers, I guess.

Lawrence Barnes64, when I'm testing my speakers, I'm only getting sound from the front left—the others aren't working at all...
Honestly, up until now, they’ve just been playing everything in 5.1 through all the stereo speakers—no matter what I actually played, I guess.
YouTube, Winamp, Max TV, Filmbox—everything was working perfectly fine with my 5.1 stereo setup.

Alright, so maybe it isn't technically 5.1, but why then won't I hear anything from the other speakers when I hit the stereo button on the remote?
It always worked before, and now it's just being difficult...

Apparently, you need to install whatever the last working audio drivers were...
But how am I even supposed to know which ones those actually were, considering I've already cycled through about 16 different driver versions...?

I guess I'm making things way more complicated than they need to be.😛

Check the case manual or just look directly at the Motherboard itself; the manufacturer and specific model should be printed right there on the board.
Once you have that, head over to the manufacturer's website, search for that exact model, and download the drivers that match whatever version of Windows you're running.

Joshua Garcia3, thanks for the tip. I'll dive into this battle as soon as I get home from work today.

Hey Bob Dylan!
So, my motherboard lists this: MCP6P M2+ver. 6.0
..I looked it up online and headed to the drivers page. I downloaded the Intel driver they list in the specs, but it’s the same old nonsense.

Windows 7 Build 267 - that was also offered, so I grabbed that too... Same exact issue.
Could you just take a quick look to see if I actually got the right one, or if I've messed up the download again??

THANKS!!

I went ahead and downloaded those drivers too, but nothing seems to work...
I'm honestly not sure what else there is to try..

I mean, I don't even know anymore, maybe you’re just losing your mind a little bit... honestly, just grab yourself a Creative PCI sound card like I did and call it a day. I totally lost my cool with the crappy onboard audio on my motherboard, so I went out and bought one, and now, whenever I upgrade to a new motherboard, I just swap the card over and everything works perfectly... total lifesaver. This is the one I'm rocking: image
