This might sound like a pretty silly question—but I’m being serious here.
Can anyone walk me through how you actually recognize it... or what it feels like in the moment? Is heart palpitations the same thing as an arrhythmia?
If you don't feel like typing out a whole essay, just drop some English keywords for me... then I can go do my own digging.
Thanks

http://www.americanheart.org, if you just type "heartbeat patterns" into a search engine, you'll pull up hundreds of results. They have tons of solid data on arrhythmias and dysrhythmias...

Honestly, though? You should really go talk to a doctor about this.

Heart palpitations aren't exactly the same thing as an arrhythmia, though they usually show up together... you'll know it when you feel that heavy thumping in your chest. Just try searching "palpitations" in Google; you might actually find some info that makes sense.

Speaking of arrhythmias... a close friend of mine deals with one. Honestly, giving them a hug is such a bizarre experience. It’s like their heart never settles into a steady beat—it’s constantly tripping over itself. It's actually pretty unsettling...

You’ll know the second it hits you... trust me, it’s a hell of a feeling.

Exactly that—just an incredibly unsettling sensation. It’s like my body suddenly decides it's my turn to bail out of a plane without a parachute. I often hear my pulse thumping right in my ears, or I'll take these deep breaths... or just stop breathing entirely for a moment. A few seconds pass and then it's over.
Only problem is, lately, it isn't happening twice a year anymore... it's happening several times a day.
Do you think this counts as "heart palpitations"?
I really hate making unnecessary trips to the doctor...

It felt like my heart was literally about to jump out of my chest... just this incredibly uncomfortable sensation, though I wasn't actually feeling panicked, sweating, or anything like that. Same deal with the racing palpitations.
For me, it was happening several times a day, but everything cleared up once I finally had that thyroid surgery.🙏

Hmm, wouldn't you call that a full-blown panic attack?

Sometimes, it all stems from psychological factors, like dealing with a sudden panic attack. But other times, you might be looking at an actual organic issue.

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you really ought to check in with your primary care physician to get an EKG and run whatever other diagnostic tests are necessary.

I deal with extra systoles myself from time to time, even though my heart health is perfectly fine. It feels like my heart just skips a beat or does two or three rapid-fire contractions right after one another...

THE THYROID?! ?! ?! ? !? !
MIT!

Well, we're here now... can we get some more details on that?

As far as the panic aspect goes—it feels similar to the physical symptoms you get when you're scared, but emotionally? Nothing changes. It’s more like a sudden rush of adrenaline than actual panic....
And the weird part is how random it is. It happens whenever. When I'm relaxed, when I'm stressed... even while I'm just lounging around. It's much rarer when I'm actually being physically active...

Well, here we are. Anyone else want to dive deeper into this?

Regarding the panic—it feels similar to physical fear symptoms, but emotionally? Nothing actually changes. It’s more like a sudden rush of euphoria than actual panic....
And the weird part is it shows up whenever. When I'm totally relaxed, when I'm stressed. When I'm just lounging around, though much less often when I'm actually being active...

I didn't get heart palpitations during exercise, but it happened a lot during the day, or would wake me up at night.
I had a nodule on one lobe, you could see it from the outside of my neck. My hormone levels were always normal. They ended up removing about a third of my right lobe. About three months after the surgery, all my symptoms vanished. I don't take any thyroid medication.

My issues included heart palpitations, panic attacks, feeling like I couldn't breathe, sweating, sleepless nights, getting sick constantly due to a weak immune system, and mental sensitivity....

It's been three years since I've even had a sore throat. I took some Xanax, pulled an all-nighter, and everything just disappeared. Again, I'll repeat, my hormone tests were always fine.

Palpitations were one of the first signs of hyperthyroidism I noticed.
I ended up with a prescription for thyroid meds, beta-blockers to slow my heart rate down, and a whole mountain of other pills.
After about a month or two, my heart finally stabilized, though it still skips a beat every now and then.
My hormone levels are still running high, but for now, I’m just managing with the thyroid medication. Apparently, this is something I’ll be taking for years to come.

A racing heart—or even just being able to feel every single beat—is one of those big red flags that screams hyperthyroidism.

It all comes down to how thyroxine and triiodothyronine mess with your system. It’s not just that your metabolism goes into overdrive, forcing your body to demand more oxygen and, by extension, more blood flow, which puts your heart under pressure. These hormones also actually increase the number of receptors on your heart muscle itself, basically turning up the volume on everything that stimulates your heartbeat.

Totally normal, honestly. It's super annoying, but everyone deals with it eventually. I actually went to see my doctor about it once; got an EKG done, and once they cleared me, they just explained what it was and why it happens. Apparently, it's nothing to worry about.

Hey, I was just scrolling through this thread and realized almost everyone here assumes sudden heart palpitations are always tied to a panic attack. Honestly, that makes me feel totally out of sorts. This has been happening to me for nearly three years now, and despite my best efforts, I still haven't pinned down the cause. Has anyone heard of sinus issues or breathing problems triggering stuff like this? It usually hits me during a sudden movement—it feels like I’ve suddenly lost my breath, and then my heart just starts racing. To be blunt, the whole thing is exhausting; it’s completely wrecked my peace of mind because I never know why it’s happening or when it’ll strike again. What do you guys do when it hits you?

Honestly—this has never happened to me... but if you're genuinely this terrified of what might be going on, the smartest move is just to see a doctor. A professional exam will tell you way more than anyone on this board ever could—plus, you’ll actually get some peace of mind.
