It’s honestly such a great film. I’ve already watched it twice... might even go for a third viewing sometime soon.

The movie is decent enough, I’d say it’s a pretty solid debut for them.
But honestly, there are quite a few plot holes that left me scratching my head.

What really bothered me, though, was how underdeveloped the relationship between the sisters felt. You get this sense that they are incredibly close, but it feels superficial—like we only see their bond through how they’re positioned together in a room, rather than through actual substance. We hardly see them actually talking or interacting in a way that feels real...

And don't even get me started on the other sisters; they felt completely sidelined.

The thing is, the whole vibe relies on showing what's visible versus what's hidden—it's all about suggestion. At least, that's how I experienced it, since the story is being told by the boys (once they grow up) observing these girls from a completely different perspective. That approach actually works for the film's themes, because it highlights the generational divide and the growing pains those kids face, alongside a society that sees the issues—which aren't even subtle, they're screaming to be noticed—but chooses to pretend they don't exist. Near the end, during that "party" sequence shot in those green tones with the golf and all that nonsense, one of the boys comments on how the adults' attitude toward the tragedy is basically: if we just ignore it until it's forgotten, it'll be like it never even happened.🙂

This movie is one of those where people always say, "if you don't get it..." but honestly, there isn't anything to get.👎
Sophia definitely wouldn't be where she is today if her husband wasn't Spike Jonze and her father wasn't Francis. Up until now, she hasn't shown an ounce of actual talent or originality. But, as the user before me pointed out, tastes differ. For me, it just doesn't work.

The movie was actually sitting on the shelves at the local Blockbuster, bundled under some totally different title for $9.75.

I mean, what can I even say? For me, both LIT and VS are absolute classics, and honestly, most people I know who actually have good taste in movies feel the exact same way.

What can I even say? Personally, I think both LIT and VS are excellent films. That’s also the case for plenty of people I know whose cinematic taste I actually respect.

People can be so incredibly hypocritical when it comes to what they actually like.
Especially those types who will swear up and down that some movie is a total masterpiece—not because they actually enjoyed it, mind you, but just so they don't look uncultured in front of a crowd of other people who are also faking it. It’s this weird social performance where everyone pretends to love something just because it's been labeled "intellectual" or "high art," which, in their heads, automatically makes it better.

...I didn't exactly love the movie, honestly. But since the studio gave it three stars, I couldn't just go to bed; I felt obligated to sit through it until the credits rolled. I still don't quite get why those girls ended up taking their own lives.😕

Wow, so I just found out Spike Jonze is actually Sofia Coppola's husband, which is great (though I can't quite wrap my head around how I missed that connection) only to realize a second later that they're actually exes. 😢

I guess when I grow up, I want to be just like Sofia 🙂
Or, if I were to take all those ideas and scripts that are never going to see the light of day and hand them over to Sofia to direct, 😍

And the soundtrack is incredible—just like it was for Lost in Translation.

A bit more gossip—Sophia is currently with the lead singer of Phoenix😍 , and they have a baby together.

Setting aside her private life and romantic entanglements, Sophia makes incredible films; The Virgin Suicides is beautiful.
Now, did her famous uncle and relatives give her a leg up early on? Probably. But the woman is exceptionally talented. Regardless of any connections, without that raw talent, she wouldn't be where she is today. That’s all.😉

Look, I get that the whole point of the movie isn't just that... it's more about growing up, the friction and the gaps—between generations, between the girls and the guys, the sheer passage of time.😕 That’s how I experienced the film, at least. But even then, I still can't quite wrap my head around those suicides...

Man, I think the point is just how it's presented. In this case, it just happened to be the suicide of those girls. There isn't some deep hidden message; why would anyone even bother looking for one? If there were a clear moral (like: eat your veggies to stay healthy), then it wouldn't be art.
