PC freezing while playing Battlefield 1

ASUS Z170A gaming ms s 1151
i7-6700K, lga1151
ddr4 16 gb(2x8) kingstone 2400 sav
napajanje corsair 650W RM650X
gpu msi rx 480 gaming x, 8 gb

win10 pro 64 bit licensed, fresh install

latest amd drivers 16.12.1, mobo flashed with latest bios

Basically, Call of Duty is wrecking me. Everything was fine at first, then things got stupid. After playing for a bit—sometimes just a few minutes—the whole thing freezes along with the audio. Nothing works except a hard reset or hitting the power button on the case. Then, weirdly enough, I can't even boot the system for a while after that. Yesterday, I actually managed to play for a couple of hours without any freezing. But this morning? The system wouldn't boot no matter how many times I tried. I pulled the GPU out and the system booted up fine using integrated graphics. Put the GPU back in and it booted fine again. Everything is running at stock settings right now; no overclocking. Watching movies or browsing the web is totally fine. Other games run without issues: The Sims 4, Company of Heroes 2, FIFA 15, Bad Company 2...
Tried a bunch of different driver versions, but nothing worked (especially the older ones where other games were unplayable—The Sims 4 was a disaster, but with newer ones it's okay, at least my wife isn't complaining). Thought maybe it was an audio driver issue, so I played around with those too. I ran Call of Duty in DX11 first, then switched to DX12 (total garbage), then switched back to DX11 the day before yesterday and it was fine. Yesterday was good again, but like I said, today the system wouldn't start. I've read everything online about people having these problems. Just seems weird... can Call of Duty actually be the reason the system won't boot? Because when I don't touch that game, I don't notice any issues. It's like launching Call of Duty just trashes everything...

Is Battlefield 1 the original one? 😬

Smells like a faulty PSU to me. It’d be smart to stress test it with some heavy hitters like the new Watch Dogs or The Witcher 3... just to see if you're looking at a software glitch or actual hardware failure.

The symptoms you mentioned suggest things are cutting out under heavy load. Since you've got all those new parts, my money is on the power supply. Maybe try borrowing a modern PSU from someone and see if it still crashes, even on max settings.

Waiting for Skinuh to crash before I try it myself. Regarding Battlefield 1, the game just sets everything to ultra on its own and my FPS was actually fine. Though, with that recent update, you get this weird lag spike for about 10 seconds where everything just chokes (FPS drop or something, haven't really dug into it).

My power supply is new too, and it's not some cheap junk, so it shouldn't be underpowering anything, but hey... who knows... maybe it's acting up...

But here's what makes zero sense: I was playing Battlefield 1 last night and it was totally fine. Then this morning, the system wouldn't even boot. I pulled the GPU, restarted... put the GPU back in, and the system boots up perfectly like nothing happened. I know from experience that if a PSU is too weak, the system won't POST.

Unfortunately, nobody I know has a PSU like mine; honestly, everyone else has weaker rigs and much cheaper power supplies.

It crossed my mind to test other high-intensity games, but Battlefield 1 is the only one I have right now; the rest are older titles... though there are different ways to troubleshoot that...

A few years back, I had issues with Battlefield 3... preordered it, and I didn't even get 2 hours of playtime total because it kept freezing. I tried everything under the sun before just giving up on it... every other game I owned ran fine... I was using an NVIDIA card back then, but also an MSI model, so maybe it's an MSI thing or maybe Battlefield just isn't meant for me?

Maybe try throwing that GPU into another rig just to see if it freezes up there too?

Another move would be to run MemTest to check your RAM.

It might not even be the memory—could be anything, really—but hey, we gotta narrow things down somehow...

Ran a few more MemTests and everything looks solid. Hit it with a Sandra Lite benchmark too—this config sits in the top 7% overall, and based on the numbers, this GPU is performing right up there with a 980 Ti or a 1070. Uninstalled The Witcher 3 to test things out—cranked everything to Ultra, just turned off the motion blur. Played for about an hour or so and had zero issues. No stutters, just smooth gameplay...

Alright, we figured some stuff out, but now we need someone with more brains and actual experience to take a look at what we've got. The New Guy might be our best bet here. Try reaching out to him and see what he thinks...

Have you tried testing each RAM stick individually? You know, pulling one 8GB stick out to run MemTest, then swapping it for the next one to see if the issue persists... it's worth the extra effort. While we're at it, maybe check on the hard drive too? Just grab CrystalDiskInfo—it’s a standard tool—and take a look at the health status.
