Hey there,
I could use a little help. A lightning strike just fried my router.
I found a replacement Deloitte on eBay.
Do I need to set up some new password through them, or can I
just grab this one from eBay, swap it out myself, and call it a day?
Thanks!

Just plug in your info and you're good to go. Honestly, you'd be smart to run a full factory reset first just to get everything dialed in perfectly.

Doesn't Comcast provide a new or refurbished replacement router if lightning strikes?

In my experience, back when I was with AT&T, they would reliably send a new one the very next day after reporting the outage. 🤷

I live in a rural area 12 miles outside of San Francisco where these storms happen all the time, and tonight was no exception...

Bryan Rivera83,
if I actually knew how to configure this stuff, it would be a total lifesaver :/

placidheron19,
last year we had a lightning strike hit our setup, so we had to buy a replacement from them,
but honestly, I’m not buying anything from them ever again because they're just shady.

Look, I’m pretty sure AT&T and Verizon will just hand you a brand new router if a lightning strike fries yours...

The post didn't actually mention AT&T or Verizon, it was talking about Comcast.

Even if it is Comcast, they aren't some untouchable gods. I don't know all the specifics—like your contract length or how badly you want to stick with them—but let's be real, it's all just one big negotiation. You can play the game, hint at switching to a competitor, maybe even score some free or dirt-cheap equipment if you push enough.
It’s honestly wild that you'd pay for hardware out of pocket just because of a lightning strike. That shouldn't be on you. If their infrastructure isn't protected, that's their headache, not yours. At the end of the day, they're selling you a service that includes the modem and router as part of the package, right?

"Holy Cow" would actually be a hilarious name for it, haha
Just surf the web with the Holy Cow

Anyway, I just scored a free router. Thanks 🙂

It’s easy enough to fry a router,😁but what happens when a lightning strike takes out much more expensive gear next time? You should really pick up a surge protector for the future; that’s just how you handle it if you want to avoid these headaches.🍿
