James Anderson5 said:I wouldn't say that, though I'm not totally obsessed with the movie myself. It's fun and pretty solid, and definitely makes you think, but it isn't exactly a masterpiece in my eyes. That said, they actually had a scientist from Caltech consulting on it, so they put quite a bit of thought into the plot and certain details...

I guess it's all just part of the marketing, but I didn't really dwell on it. It's a sci-fi flick, so obviously everything is made up. The stuff about the inside of the black hole was so bad I almost felt bad for them, but if Mike Tyson says they can do whatever they want—well, I suppose they have that right; there's no business like show business. My main issue is that the movie feels a bit disjointed, like the scenes are just thrown together, and the characters' motivations for certain actions feel a little unclear or illogical. Maybe the filmmakers just weren't too worried about it, since they probably figured the big marketing push and the Indian crowd on IMDb would handle most of the heavy lifting.

Eric Fox7 said:I mean, I guess a director's whole job is to actually hook the audience, right? 🤷

To me, Kubrick's films are about as engaging as a broken record.

A director's real job—just like any other artist—is self-expression. The industry part is just a byproduct, not the point.

Besides, "keeping an audience interested" is some vague bullshit. You can't define interest when you don't even know what the hell people actually care about.

you're seriously overdoing it

I guess Alfred Hitchcock was on a whole different level back in his day. Honestly, he probably holds up just as well by today's standards, too.

Take Billy Wilder, for instance—that whole Golden Age of Hollywood era. Their films have more charm and much sharper dialogue than 99% of what we see today. Look, I’m not some hater of modern cinema; honestly, there’s plenty of good stuff out there if you actually bother to look for it. It’s just that those two directors, along with a select few others, were telling real stories.

Just watched North by Northwest. Damn, what a movie. 🙏

Every Hitchcock film is good, except maybe Dial M for Murder... wasn't really my thing.

That German series about World War II is actually pretty decent too. "Our Fathers, Our Mothers." Those damn Nazis.

Kudos to the programming director over at PBS for doing an incredible job; we’re finally seeing some quality non-English language films and series popping up on US networks...
I’d highly recommend they pick up the German series *im angesicht des verbrechens* (honestly, I can't be bothered to double-check if my spelling is perfect here)—it's a ten-part series about the mafia in Berlin...

Germany’s got some solid stuff too

but when it comes to WWII stuff, Band of Brothers just clears the competition easy... 🙏

The visual effects and battle sequences are solid, but honestly, there's way too much American sentimentality for my taste. Don't get me wrong, it's worth a watch, but if you want actual quality war cinema, there are better options out there.

I feel like this German series leans a bit too hard into the melodrama. You have these five friends who are all struggling with massive moral dilemmas over everything happening around them, while everyone else seems totally unbothered. It makes me think of what Velimir Zajec might say: "Yeah, sure..."
