Just thought I'd brighten up restlesssurfer97's day by digging into how Vietnam handled the pandemic. It's a relatively modest nation right next to China, yet they managed to clock zero deaths. Pretty wild, right?

The country started developing tests almost immediately after IT confirmed in January that Three People traveling Back fra Wuhan

Vietnam followed a pretty logical testing roadmap: they started by screening travelers, then pivoted to testing their close contacts, and eventually expanded to anyone showing symptoms similar to COVID.

They really leaned into mass testing. To put things in perspective, they ran 966 tests for every single confirmed case. Compare that to Taiwan at 149 or New Zealand at 132. Meanwhile, over here in the USA, we're sitting at 6, and the UK is at 5. We aren't even playing the same game.

Then there's this:

Those found to be sick, whether at the airport or elsewhere, were placed in quarantine facilities for 14 days, free of charge. Self-isolation at home isn’t permitted in Vietnam, as the government worries those with the disease might give it to their family members.

And finally:

It also helps that the public has received and accepted what health officials tell them, as many abide by the government’s guidelines like social distancing and mask wearing. That only makes the country’s broader response easier.

The bottom line? 288 confirmed cases, 233 recoveries, and zero deaths. They've even got schools reopening and the economy starting to stir again.

Since we're already talking about them, Vietnam is honestly going to see some massive economic gains here, because the way things are trending, manufacturing is definitely shifting away from China, with some of it moving closer to Europe and the USA and the rest spreading out to other Asian countries, where Vietnam is pretty much a top-tier favorite right now.

I mean, I honestly feel like even Jordanov’s seat is getting a deep clean right now, like they're sifting through everything just to find those little nuggets of gold.

I saw the exact same thing happening. Just a few weeks ago, the Japanese started talking about bringing a huge chunk of production, especially all those high-tech gadgets, back home to Japan from China.

The world is finally waking up to the fact that it was a massive mistake to cram almost all global production into a single country.

It isn't exactly true that everything in the world is manufactured over there anymore. I suppose what the Chinese produce on such a massive scale simply isn't profitable for the West, mostly because nobody here seems particularly interested in doing that kind of labor. It’s arguably much easier to just repackage goods made in China. A rather simple example might be light bulbs.

Of course, they manufacture serious equipment as well; they have certainly caught up to Western standards of expertise quite some time ago.

Asian countries really learned their lesson from SARS—which was way more lethal than COVID—so they moved incredibly fast and decisively.
