I'm not stuck using some ancient dial-up modem from the 90s—I don't exactly have half an hour to wait just to download a single megabyte. 😱

Are you actually happy about this? Like, would you want to dance for joy? Something like this, maybe?

Adi definitely has the moves—his footwork is honestly pretty enviable. You can't help but wonder how he'd hold up on Dancing with the Stars.

It’s definitely better than having to do it all by yourself. 🤣

Huge thanks to everyone who stepped in to explain the technical side of how images show up here. I guess I should just add that when you embed an image on a site like Reddit, the server isn't actually doing the heavy lifting—your own browser is.

Basically, your browser asks the forum for a post, the forum hands over the text along with instructions on where to find the image (that's the URL you paste into your post, which stays the same regardless of how big the file is). Then, your browser just takes that URL and goes off to grab the image itself to display it within the thread. 😉

The only images actually stored directly in this forum's database are things like avatars and certain UI elements. But even then, they're only downloaded once; after that, your browser just pulls them from its own local cache—you know, that little storage spot where it keeps stuff it's already downloaded so it doesn't have to fetch it again later.

Regarding the image rules, I kind of wish they weren't enforced quite so strictly. For example, if someone uploads an image that's 300x780, it technically breaks the rules, even though it actually has less total surface area than a standard 640x480 photo.

I actually went out and grabbed a third monitor—thinking that might fix things—but nope, still no luck... 🤷

Of course I'm in.
I mean, this has to be the only forum in the entire universe where we're still stuck using 640 * 480 pixel photos back in 2024. 😁

I might actually get why if there was an option to upload photos directly to Reddit's servers—which, let's be honest, are absolute garbage anyway—but since that's totally blocked and we're forced to just "paste" images hosted on third-party sites, there seriously isn't a single logical reason why they wouldn't allow larger files. Even an 800*600 photo wouldn't distort anything or "stretch" the layout, and honestly, seeing an 800*600 shot is way better than squinting at some tiny 640*480 thing...

Most people are against it.
The proposal is rejected 🙂.
Locking this thread 😬.

Since our server is already struggling quite a bit, I think it's best if we don't overload it more than we absolutely have to. I'm really not sure that going with larger files would be a smart move, and honestly, a 640*480 resolution is perfectly fine for what we need here.

That has nothing to do with the forum server, so it’s not a valid argument. It won't affect performance. 🙂

With high-res monitors and fast internet, staying with such small resolutions isn't a technical issue at all.

Now, people just love to nitpick, so everyone finds something to complain about... too many images in a thread, quoting images, etc. But that's really down to culture and moderation.

Some threads actually need a lot of images, while in others they're unnecessary and distracting. Image size isn't even the point there. 😁

Against, absolutely.

Some photos actually make sense, but others... they just feel like trolling.
Take this one, for example.

If anyone needs a photo to back up an argument, just drop the link. It’s much better than hogging a quarter of the page when everyone else worked so hard to write something meaningful.

I mean, I still can't help but feel like people roast a team way more through their writing than through actual photos—but hey, maybe I'm just wrong.

The rules allow images up to 640x480 pixels. I think it's high time we change that and allow at least 800x600.

The current image size limits were set way back in 2007. Monitors were smaller, computers were slower, and most people were still struggling with sluggish dial-up connections. From that perspective, limiting image sizes made sense—to prevent bandwidth congestion for those on slow connections or to keep things readable—but today? That rule is baseless. It needs to be updated.
