Hey there!!

So, I was wondering if anyone could help me out—can someone drop a link to the official website for the Tiger club over in Chicago? I’m having a hard time finding their page online (assuming they even have one)...

Also, does anyone know what the monthly membership or training fees look like at that club?

Hello everyone, I am new to this community and find myself in need of a little guidance regarding the selection of a martial art. I have been intending to begin training for some time now, yet I find myself completely undecided on which discipline to pursue. I am currently weighing my options between Aikido (though if anyone could kindly explain the concept of Iwama-style, I would certainly appreciate it), Jiu-Jitsu, and perhaps Hapkido—though I am honestly unsure if there are even any reputable schools offering that here in the States. To be clear, my interest does not lie in the realm of competitive tournaments or trophies; my sole focus is on practical self-defense. Thank you all!

I asked twice already. Now, for the third time:

Is there any karate for adult beginners in the Chicago area?

Thinking about trying out some karate training. Might actually enjoy it. Just chasing some childhood dreams, I suppose... the Karate Kid, obviously.

This link lists all the karate clubs across the country.
Check out the ones located in New York City and give a few of them a call to see what they offer.
I can't really give you a better answer than that since I don't know much more.

If you’re leaning toward Aikido, you should reach out to Megan White4. For Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, check out www.subos.hr—honestly, if you're looking for grappling, they offer probably the best bang for your buck in terms of quality versus cost. If you want to look into Hapkido or Ju-Jutsu, give Gerald Smith76 a shout😬...

There are plenty of regulars on this board who practice these styles if you want to pick their brains...

You might also find http://www.profightstore.com/content.asp?mode=adresar useful for research...

Some solid clubs worth checking out (at least for a glance) www.bujinkan.hr/...

Domo arigato gozaimashita!
I’ve been weighing my options regarding Bujinkan for quite some time now, though I find myself increasingly intrigued by this Israeli self-defense system called Hisardut. To be honest, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu doesn't particularly appeal to me since it doesn't quite fit my personal style; I was never really built for pure grappling...

If you're looking at Israeli systems, you should definitely check out Krav Maga too I'd also suggest looking into that at least...👍

I’ve been giving some thought to Krav Maga lately, though I’ve heard through the grapevine that Jiu-Jitsu might actually be the superior choice when it comes to civilian self-defense. My main struggle right now is just locating a decent gym, as I really need something located over near the East Side. I caught wind of a studio somewhere over on Subic Avenue, but my searches online haven't turned up anything concrete. In all likelihood, I’ll probably just head over to placidbison20's place and join that dark legion of his. That said, if anyone else happens to know of a solid Aikido club around here with instructors who actually know their business, please let me know. Cheers!

Does anyone know if there's anywhere else I can pick up a katana in the RH area besides Replic Art?

And honestly, where else can you even find anyone like them? I mean, they're the only ones I know who actually operate like this...

I tracked down three more shops that carry them, though honestly, none of them are worth the trouble. Two are just those import places, and frankly, I wouldn't trust them with a katana if my life depended on it. Then there's that one shop near the old stone gates... they mostly deal in "movie prop" gear, which is pretty pathetic. It’s bad enough that the blades actually wobble—the tang isn't even secured properly. Just junk...

There’s a shop called Ducan over in Providence. They carry katanas. I can’t vouch for the quality since I haven’t picked one up myself, but they aren't cheap Chinese knockoffs. If you really want me to, I'll head down there, grab their number, and let you know.

Omega training hall—where you can train Dennis Survival Jiu Jitsu (basically Hebrew Hisardut)—is located at 55 Subic Street, right across from that lot over by the old Gorica factory. It’s in the same building as the Crazy Horse nightclub. Classes run from 8 PM to 10 PM. Just show up, watch a session, and ask around for the specifics. I’ve been training DSJJ for a year now. If you’re looking for actual, real-world self-defense and don't mind brutal, disciplined sessions, I'd recommend it. It’s a mix of full-contact Judo, Jiu Jitsu, Kyokushin Karate, and wrestling for when you're unarmed, eventually moving into weapon defense too. Hit me up if you have questions. I'll try to help.
P.S. You won't find their website anywhere. The firm rebranded from Barun to Omega, but they never bothered updating the URL, so it’s still stuck under the old name. Check out this site: www.dsr-barun.usIf you want the lowdown on DSJJ, just head over to the official Israeli site. It’s all there. [Link: www.geocities.com/hanoverd]
And on the page: www.geocities.com/hanoverd/revue.htmlCheck out these shots of the US reps from DSJJ and our instructors. Tubic’s on day 7 now, and Anic is hitting day 6. Ignore the "day 3" caption under the photos—site hasn't been updated in forever.

Look, just go ahead and check all that out—get me the specifics on the price and how well-made they actually are... and once you know, let me know... I'd really appreciate it!!

Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone here could give me some insight into the current state of Japanese martial arts in the States. Specifically, does anyone know which local clubs are active for Kendo, or where one might go to properly study Iaido? On a related note, I’ve been curious about the technical side of things—could anyone explain the practical differences between a standard katana and one specifically designed for Iaido practice?

Kendo, Iaido ---> www.kendo.org, then just look under ---> clubs

The gap between a shinken and an iaito (bogito) is massive. We're talking material, build quality, how they're forged, price points... basically everything about their purpose and design differs.
