As of right now, they still don't have the capability in Indianapolis because the equipment hasn't arrived yet. They ordered it ages ago, but apparently, they've been stuck waiting for over a year now... I checked in with my contact at the Blood Transfusion Department once upon a time...
Once I hear any news that the machinery has finally landed, I'll be sure to post an update... though you might actually know sooner than I do, since it's been quite a while since I last asked...

Does anyone know if they pay you for donating plasma? Where can I actually go to do this, and how often am I allowed to swing by?

They actually pay you. You can head over to the clinic on Rockefeller Boulevard to get it done. Usually, you can donate once a month.

I’ve heard that somewhere myself, too. But once I actually posted about it on Reddit, everyone jumped down my throat claiming I was dead wrong.

Next time you head over to donate plasma for the first time, just ask them right then and there when you can come back. That’s how you'll know the schedule. And hey, drop a note here for the rest of us—that way anyone else interested in donating plasma will be in the loop.

I guess so. People here are saying the donation happened over at Rockefeller 3, but then they say it was at Petrov 3... honestly, I have no clue, which is why I was asking if anyone actually fainted or anything. 🙂

From what I’ve gathered, you can only donate plasma once a month, and they don't even give you cash for it, so forget about getting that $90 a month.

Hey, just a heads-up that they’ve updated the platelet separator process over in Miami. From here on out, they’ll be focusing specifically on platelets, though they’ll probably move into plasma soon enough.

The whole thing takes about an hour. You can swing by once a month to do it, and just so you know, there’s no cash compensation involved.

They’re calling on all the ladies and guys in Miami to head down to the Blood Transfusion Department at the Mayo Clinic to donate some platelets.👍

Don't mix up your terms. Plasma is donated once a month, whereas donating platelets is what happens weekly in the $50. I started donating plasma myself, so I know exactly what my doctor told me regarding when I could come back. Also, just so you know, plasma donation isn't paid—only platelet donation is.

My bad, James Lewis6, I was totally misinformed earlier. I actually just left the Blood Transfusion Department this morning after donating platelets. I asked the doctor about it, and she told me platelets can only be donated once a month, and there's no compensation for that. But you can donate plasma every single week, and you actually get a payout for it. $50 It’s because they turn that plasma into expensive medications later on, so it wouldn't be right if donors didn't get something back for it. Anyway, that’s the scoop I just got an hour ago at the Blood Transfusion Department.

From what I can gather, you've all figured out that plasma donation can be done weekly and that there's cash involved in exchange. If I've managed to misunderstand the basics, please set me straight.

I have a few specific questions.

What does the process look like before that first plasma session? Do I need to make an appointment (how, who, and where?), and are there any mandatory screenings or tests I should know about?
Also, does donating plasma affect my ability to donate whole blood? I’m a regular donor, so I need to know if this will mess with my usual three-month rotation.
And does plasma donation get recorded in my official blood donation record?

Stumbled onto this thread by accident.
A buddy of mine donated plasma once, and within two or three months, he’d dropped about 10 pounds of muscle mass. He told me he's never doing it again.
I don't know much about the science behind it—just saying what I saw.

I don't know how things work in your neck of the woods, but we just got our plasma separator here in Miami a few months ago. Honestly, I highly doubt they have one sitting around in Indianapolis yet.

I heard something from a colleague the other day, but I'm not entirely sure about the details. I tried searching on Google, but it didn't really turn up much, so I figured I might ask here...

You can get your plasma at that Infectious Disease Star clinic.
You go in once a week and walk away with $50. Honestly, can you even beat that? 🙂

They aren't taking anyone right now, but they should start up again after New Year's Day.
The first time you go, they draw some blood just to figure out your type and, obviously, run the standard tests for diseases.
Then you head back a week later, have a little chat with this super duper doctor, and then you're good to go for the plasma. You'll need to bring your ID and insurance card, but only for that first visit.

The whole thing takes about 40 minutes or so. They've got the radio, TV, newspapers... plus the staff there are actually really great. 🙂
Personally, I enjoy it. I'd probably go every single day if I could. Mostly for the cash, I guess. 😁

Oh, I forgot to mention—they give you a sandwich too. It’s either ham and cheese or tuna, though I wouldn't know for sure since I'm vegetarian 🙂 and a juice, too. The juice is pretty good, just that cheap stuff from Trader Joe's. 😁)

I think that's pretty much everything.
And yeah, they'll even pay for your tetanus shots (like $30 or $17, I can't remember exactly) if your antibody levels drop too low.
