That is a massive rabbit hole, Carl Rivera43, though admittedly a fascinating one—perhaps I'll dive into it with a more substantial post over the weekend. For now, here are just a few observations regarding my perspective on what constitutes a true death in the broader sense:
- grinding away at the exact same job for your entire career;
- being with the same partner for your whole life;
- adhering strictly to a rigid moral code for decades;
- spending every Sunday in church and other similar institutions for a lifetime;
- and so on.
The common denominator:
Doing the exact same things day in and day out for a lifetime.
That is the death of the soul.

Honestly, it’s like watching a lion in the Serengeti pace the exact same patch of dirt every single day, trapped in a loop with the same tired group of players...

There wouldn't be any lions left at all
.
.
..
Just like how there aren't many decent people left these days!
All that remains are a bunch of lobotomized fanatics following a game that isn't even happening anymore🙂

I’ve been hanging out on these forums since 2002... I guess I'd be dead by now if that were a bad thing.😁
I’ve met so many awesome people here and on my main forum too. Honestly, no bad experiences at all... instead of just wasting time scrolling aimlessly or sitting in coffee shops, I feel like I'm actually doing something useful here.

….The common thread:
Doing the exact same thing over and over again for your whole life.
That’s how the soul dies….

Yeah... definitely... when you go through the motions without any real fulfillment, you end up hitting these massive walls. That kind of self-sabotage is a real killer.

Wait, did I miss something? Is there a new thread? I feel like I’m always one step behind the conversation lately! Anyway, what's on everyone's mind today? kaže:
I’ve been hanging out on these forums since 2002... I guess if that’s a bad thing, I should probably be dead by now, right?😁
I’ve met so many awesome people here and on my main forum, too. Honestly, I haven't had a single bad experience yet! It feels like I'm actually being productive. Instead of just wasting hours scrolling aimlessly or sitting around at a Starbucks, I'm spending my time here. Isn't that a much better use of my day?

Yeah, the savings really add up... but honestly? At the end of the day, just being able to head out for a quick coffee on my own and spend some time posting on the forums? That’s the real win. Isn't that what it's all about?

So, I was scrolling through one of the discussions here on the forum and it totally triggered a memory about this topic:

https://www.cnn.com/health/wellness-and-lifestyle...

If we just look at the symptoms, they're pretty clear:
Overusing forums to the point where it messes with your mental health, your physical well-being, your job performance, and your relationships with people.

We're talking muscle atrophy from sitting too much, a junk food diet leading to weight gain, wrecked sleep schedules that leave you exhausted, and strained social ties that can mess up parenting or even lead to divorce.

What do you guys think? Anyone have experience with this—either personally or seeing it happen to someone close to them?

For me, the forum is usually a nice place to hang out, and I think I use it in moderation.
But man, I’ve had those rough patches in life where I definitely overdid it—I'd spend way too much time online, and afterward, I’d just feel nauseous, dissatisfied, and honestly, kind of depressed.

It makes me wonder... are the users who are posting from sunrise to late at night, every single day, for years on end, actually living in a constant state of emotional crisis?

In my book, any kind of addiction is basically just an escape from uncomfortable emotions. So, being addicted to a forum would be its own version of running away from reality—avoiding facing the tough stuff and using the internet as a massive distraction from "the things I actually need to get done."

Let me know your thoughts and ideas... thanks so much 🙂

I’d say yes. That kind of behavior is fundamentally broken.
It feels like this forum has become a magnet for people with serious social and emotional issues.

I work remotely, so I spend plenty of time online browsing various boards and networks—including this one—but I'm not hooked. It’s not even particularly useful or fun; if I had to pull a real 9-to-5 job, I wouldn't be wasting my time here.

Honestly, hanging out on this forum is way more productive than grinding through some war simulator, don't you think?

Let's move that to another thread.

Off-topic here, but this is such a great discussion. 👍
Personally, I notice these cycles in myself—periods where things I read on here hit me harder than usual, or maybe not at all—and when I feel like it’s starting to mess with my head, I just step back. And honestly? When I see someone who is constantly, obsessively present on a forum like this, it really makes me wonder about the actual quality of their life and their real-world relationships.

edit: I also think a forum can act as a sort of substitute for something else... a placeholder for reality. For instance, if I’m on here bragging about my perfect marriage, my amazing relationship, my incredible cooking skills, or how much of a stellar parent I am (okay, I'm exaggerating 🙂 ), it somehow tricks me into feeling like a better spouse, partner, cook, or parent in real life. Which, obviously, isn't true. 😬 It feels a bit like those people who decide they're finally going on a strict diet, but then immediately go out and eat a whole pizza to "reward" themselves for making such a good decision. 😁

Why do you think that is? 🍿

I don't really see why gaming would be a worse way to spend time. I play them myself quite a bit, and I've actually met or gotten closer to so many people through them. They’re a great part of my life. It’s just like someone else mentioned about this forum—it's all about connecting with people. 🙂

I enjoy this forum because I love reading different perspectives. I wouldn't say I'm addicted; I can easily go without it. It's just become a daily habit to read something new. Since I'm a fast reader, I don't spend too much time scanning through the threads that interest me.

Addiction, huh? If you start breaking out in a sweat at the thought of being without something, or if you can't imagine a single day without it... then you're definitely neglecting other responsibilities in your life.

No kind of addiction is good, whether it's forums, gaming, or adult content.

I've felt that way twice in my life. The first time was with video games when I was younger, and the second was when I started playing online casino games. I hit a decent amount once, thought I could chase an even bigger win, and ended up losing everything. I hit zero and never went back to it—but man, quitting was incredibly hard. I couldn't believe how addictive it could be. 😁

On the flip side, cigarettes don't trigger that feeling for me at all, even though I tried them plenty of times. Most people told me, "Don't even bother, you'll get hooked instantly," but it wasn't like that for me. 🤷

As for forum addiction, I think some people definitely have it—that feeling the author mentioned. Even when you feel bad about it, you find yourself coming right back. It sounds familiar. You know it's bad and you're neglecting other things, but you just can't stop. The brain just keeps asking for more. 🕺

Listening to this forum feels just like listening to music. Some tracks {teme} hit perfectly every single time, while others show up much less often, but I love that sense of variety. It’s always there when you need it.

Remember when we were stuck in lockdown? Most of the local coffee shops and hangouts were shuttered for nearly a month. A lot of people really struggled with that. But now? It’s been over 20 days since things opened back up, and honestly, most folks have adjusted. You rarely hear anyone complaining about how long it lasted anymore—even though, if you think about it, those restrictions actually dragged on for well over 50 days.

I'm just here to say—and I mean this with total conviction—that things need to move quicker if we're actually going to see any real progress around here. It’s all about that momentum, you know? Like, why drag things out when you can just hit the gas and get it done? Some people love to overcomplicate the process—they get bogged down in the weeds, staring at spreadsheets like they're some kind of sacred text—but honestly, if you aren't pushing for speed, you're basically standing still. It’s simple math, really. Faster execution leads to faster results, and let's be real, nobody has time to wait around for perfection when "good enough and fast" wins the race almost every single time. Just my two cents, though. Take it or leave it. kaže:
I’ve been hanging out on these forums since way back in 2002... honestly, if that’s a bad thing, I think I might actually drop dead right here—which, let's be real, would probably be a pretty funny way to go.😁
I’ve met so many awesome people on here—and honestly, on my main forum too—so I haven't really had any bad experiences at all... plus, instead of just wasting hours scrolling through mindless junk or sitting around at a Starbucks, I feel like I'm actually being somewhat productive with my time for once.

I mean, yeah—forums themselves are kind of a mixed bag, you know? They can be great, they can be trash, it’s all pretty ambivalent depending on where you land. But addiction... man, that's a whole different animal entirely. That's a completely different conversation.

I'm right there with you. Some discussions just hit too close to home, they get under my skin, and I have to bail. There are days when this whole place feels completely uninspiring, just mindless and boring.

Addiction is what this is: you see someone drop 250 posts in two days, you check the stats and realize they're posting every five to seven minutes—sometimes more—and they do it all day, for days on end. At that point, it's crystal clear we're looking at addiction because that person clearly HAS zero time for anything else in life besides this forum.
Just imagine how long that person stays silent, barely using their actual voice to communicate. They eat on the fly, staring at a screen, sitting, lying down...

It's a damn addiction, and from what I know about addictions, they are freaking hard to kick.

And that second part? 🤣

Little ways to lick your fingers and pretend it was worth it 😁
Basically compensating for dissatisfaction, right? As if bragging on a forum is magically going to fix whatever it is they're unhappy about.

Exactly! Sometimes this place is nothing more than a total distraction from what you actually need to be doing—like, you're focused on work and then you drift over here just to kill time, kind of like scrolling through a newspaper during a quick coffee break.

Every now and then, though, it hits the spot when there's a decent discussion going on or some cool knowledge and life experiences being swapped around.
Plus, there are a few regulars on here whose posts I actually enjoy reading.
