stormymaker242 said:Hi everyone, my dad just tested positive for COVID today. I contacted my doctor immediately and was told I need to quarantine for 20 days. I don't have any symptoms at all. I’m honestly confused about why it's 20 days, though... because every single person I know who was either a close contact or living in the same house with an infected person ended up getting a 10-day isolation period. Is this some new guideline, or does every doctor just interpret the rules however they want?

Self-isolation lasts for 10 days. If you start developing symptoms during that window, it gets extended by another 10 days. And if you still have a fever, it might be longer than that, depending on the situation.

Ten days left.
Call the epidemiologist in charge of your county right now.
Edit: someone beat me to it.

The isolation period lasts for ten days following your last contact with someone who tested positive.
If you happen to live in a shared household, you'll need to complete those ten days only after the infected person's own isolation period has officially ended.

Is there any way to actually view my official isolation order—you know, the actual paperwork? Is it posted somewhere on a portal like MyChart or something similar? To be honest, I didn't quite catch everything the doctor was saying regarding my isolation period; she gave me a date, but now I'm sitting here wondering if I'm cleared to head out on that specific day, or if I'm technically stuck indoors until midnight. Since it's right in the middle of the holiday season, I don't really have anyone to call—I'm sure the public health officials are absolutely swamped right now, and the last thing I want to do is bother them just to clarify whether I can step foot outside or not.

I actually asked my doctor why they’re quoting twenty days. According to his explanation, Dad gets ten days, and then I get an additional ten days once his period ends because we share the same household... I know at least seven friends who were in this exact same situation and only received ten days, which is why I decided to ask. However, none of them are seeing the same doctor I am.

When my daughter received her decision regarding her IEP—it said, for instance, that the period runs from December 6th through the 15th, 2020, and then she can return to school on the 16th—it was pretty clear... I mean, it seems obvious that the final day mentioned is definitely included in that timeframe.

It’s all just... strange, I guess. A colleague of mine was just out on sick leave because her son caught COVID—they live under the same roof, obviously—and she ended up getting ten days off. But here is the thing—it feels a bit odd—her computer has been acting up since the very first day he started showing symptoms. Maybe there is some connection there? I don't know. It just seems a little suspicious.

As for me, I never received any official notice regarding sick leave at all.

That's exactly how it should be. You did the right thing by notifying your primary care physician right away. That’s actually why I refuse to get tested. Legally speaking, if I don't have a positive result, I don't have COVID-19.

You need to emphasize to the doctor that you’ll be staying in the attic, completely separated from your father, with no physical contact allowed except through video calls; if you frame it that way, they'll give you 10 days. Of course, you'd need your own private bathroom in the attic, and as for food, just tell them you'll have meals tossed out the window from the street...😵
And then you'll get 10 days of pure isolation.🤣

Where exactly can we see evidence of self-isolation among US citizens?

It honestly makes zero sense—I can see just about everything else through my official government portal, from my supplemental insurance status to when my car registration expires or even exactly which local polling station I’m assigned to, but this? This is nowhere to be found. Everyone else seems to have access to my quarantine status—pharmacists, police officers, even the lady at the DMV check it—yet somehow, I’m the only one who can't actually view my own records.

It makes zero sense, but we're stuck with this reality.
I've been able to check my medical leave on the official portal, but the actual test results? Gone. And how long my isolation lasts? Completely invisible to me.

So my girlfriend tested positive yesterday and got slapped with a 14-day quarantine...
It feels like they just hand these out whenever they feel like it, I guess.....

I’m curious how the police even go about serving those fines for allegedly breaking quarantine if you don't actually open your door to them. Do they just try calling your cell phone? Or does the citation eventually just show up in your mailbox?

So, my roommate's sitting around waiting on test results right now. I feel totally fine—zero symptoms, nothing. Do I have to stay stuck in quarantine too, or am I good to go move around until the positive news actually hits?

Look, until you actually get the official word that you're in isolation, you aren't... I guess. You're free to move.

Nobody ever showed up at our place while we were stuck in lockdown.

From what I can gather, the only way they catch you is if you actually go somewhere where you have to show ID and the officers see there's an active order against you. But honestly, you’d have to be incredibly dense to pull a move like that.
