A little over a year ago, I was driving through Italy—specifically in the Brescia area.
Then, just a few days ago, a letter arrives in English from a company called Nivi Credit. Apparently, they’ve been granted power via some legal mandate to collect a fine on behalf of the City of Brescia's Municipal Police.
The violation they're hitting me with is "driving in a restricted traffic zone." I don't recall doing anything like that (I'm usually pretty careful about those things), but hey, it's entirely possible I actually messed up.
After doing some digging into Nivi Credit, I've realized they specialize in debt collection, mostly targeting drivers from Switzerland or Germany who somehow managed to bypass toll payments (like during a toll operator strike when they lift the barriers).
The amount itself isn't massive—around 60 bucks—but what really gets under my skin is the sheer way they handle this, and the massive gap in time between the supposed violation and this notice showing up.
The letter just showed up in my mailbox; nobody even signed for it.
So, here’s what I’m wondering:
Has anyone else dealt with something like this? Ever received a fine or any kind of notice coming out of Italy?
What actually happens if I just ignore this demand for payment? Am I going to get hauled in by the cops, or will I run into some other headache the next time I visit Italy?
