ironcyclist58 said:Yeah, they’re definitely hitting you with conversion fees. With Chime, you can top up your card without getting fleeced, and there aren't any hidden currency exchange markups either. If you're interested, I can shoot you a referral link so you can snag a $13 bonus on Chime.

Wait, isn't it true that you can't even top up PayPal with US dollars directly?

Well, if that's the case, I don't really need the transfer service. Unless there's some hidden catch that makes it worth using even if I already have Revolut? If you've got a link handy, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again, ironcyclist58. I finally signed up and moved some cash over.

Is just having a virtual card enough? Can I actually use it for in-person shopping by tapping my phone at the Post Office terminal, similar to how you'd use the Chase app or their physical cards?

And am I really only looking at opening an account if I want to receive money?

Yeah, you should be able to toss a virtual card into Apple Pay without any issues. I haven't actually tested it myself, but people over on Reddit have been saying it works just fine...

Can anyone help me out here?
I need to move some money from my US bank account over to an account in Germany.
What’s going to be the cheapest and most secure way to handle this?

Has anyone else run into a wall trying to update their Mastercard PIN at an ATM? I’m stuck in this endless loop where the machine keeps insisting my code is wrong, even though I know it isn't.🤔

You might want to try one of the JP Morgan Chase ATMs; I managed to update my ZIP code there without any issues. Just make sure your card is actually active—I'm assuming you’ve already used it for a few purchases with the old ZIP code?

I just realized that Wise has finally added Apple Pay support for topping up accounts in America! 🙏 Previously, you could only do this if your account was registered in the USA, Switzerland, France, Spain, Ireland, or Italy. Unfortunately, it isn't showing up for my local currency yet, though it works perfectly for dollars and pounds. I’m really hoping they roll it out for all currencies soon—it would be great to have it work for everything. 🙏

I honestly don't get why they are still clinging to that "fast transfer fee" when topping up via card; almost every other service lately has phased that right out.

On the bright side, you can make a zero-fee deposit using bunq. It’s pretty much the ideal setup—you just use bunq and then the bunq app pops up automatically to confirm the payment. 👍

It’s not just that they still have it, they’ve actually bumped it up several times. Back when I first started using PayPal, using a USD debit card was basically free, and credit cards were just a tiny fee—maybe 0.2% for debit and 0.3% for credit. Then USD went up to 0.2% and other fees hit 0.4%, and now we're looking at 0.35% for USD and 0.5% for everything else. It just keeps creeping up...

I honestly don't get their logic regarding these fees. If you ask me, I’d much rather agree to a slightly less favorable currency exchange rate—just enough to let the service stay profitable—than deal with being hit by top-up fees on my debit card. That kind of upfront cost just turns people off immediately. Even Chime recently got rid of those types of charges.

And then, to top it all off, I see they're charging for bank transfers from US accounts too 🤦

Sometimes I look back and realize there was actually a time when transfers didn't cost an arm and a leg...
Now they’re hiking up those conversion fees too, bumping the USD-EUR spread from 0.4% to 0.67%. Honestly, even JP Morgan Chase isn't being that greedy. 🤦

I fail to see the logic in utilizing PayPal when one already has Chime at their disposal.
It becomes quite overwhelming to read accounts claiming PayPal is the superior choice while characterizing Chime as unreliable and such...

Back when I first opened an account, Twitter was actually one of the few major players offering support for US dollars, long before Chime became a thing—not to mention Stripe, which honestly feels like it’s in a completely different league compared to the rest. Even now, Twitter offers a much wider variety of currencies than Chime does. Plus, you can actually set up bank accounts for various markets through them; for instance, you can grab a US account and seamlessly link it to your American PayPal to withdraw funds without getting hit by any commission fees. Another big difference? Twitter provides actual debit cards, whereas Chime just gives you prepaid ones. While Twitter used to have a clear edge over Chime, it still has plenty of unique perks to offer today. That said, I’m really hoping they eventually get their act together and lower those pesky fees so they can truly compete with Chime on equal footing. At the end of the day, every one of these services has its strengths, and none of them are perfect. 🙂

I've been using it for like two years now, but man, those fees just keep climbing higher and higher. I guess that whole PayPal workaround is basically the only reason I haven't ditched it yet.

Does anyone know when transfers from Wise actually hit an American business account? Also—does the bank usually tack on some random fee?
I’m assuming they do, though when I move money over from Payoneer, my bank doesn't charge me anything—the USD just shows up and that's that.
Looking at the numbers now, it seems like using Wise would be slightly more cost-effective, but I'm worried that any savings will just get eaten up by whatever service fee the bank decides to slap on me...
