Man, if you ask the GOP crowd, you're basically asking to get screwed over... Honestly, if the American Parliament hadn't voted unanimously to pull out of the Arbitration, they probably would've just handed that territory over on a silver platter.

Kind of like what Ivica Račan pulled off back in 2001. 😉

Honestly, we don't need to do anything—just ignore the Canadians. If they won't let us in, who cares? We managed fine without the Schengen Area before, and we can manage now. Like Zoki says, they need this more than we do.

Regarding Račan—I mean, I don't even know what to say about that whole era. It was such a messy, complicated time during that "post-Franjo Harmon" transition period... everyone was basically just using us, and Canada was just one piece of that puzzle. But yeah, looking back, he really should have handled things differently—better, actually.

As for Sanders's government—honestly, I don't even know where they stood regarding America-Canada relations.

Then there's Milanović's administration—they finally stepped away from that whole mess with the Arbitration (and honestly, Milanović still has that same vibe today), and they started hitting those Canadian fishermen with fines again, though then the sudden penalties just stopped. Plus, the decision to pull out was unanimous in the American Parliament, which really should have been a win...

Now with Plenković's governments—they’ve been pretty passive on all this. Janez Janša used to be the one driving things, but he wasn't pushing this specific issue, and now these guys are suddenly all in... so, let's see how the folks in Brussels react to that.

If you ask me, Franjo Harmon kind of messed everything up from the jump by not sending the 1st Guards Brigade for "exercises" over in the World of Gera at the end of the war. If he had, none of this would be an issue... 😁

Look, let's be real here—it was actually Ivica Račan (Social Democratic Party) who wanted to give up that land.

And yeah, we totally did, and that’s exactly when we showed our first sign of weakness—which Canada immediately started exploiting big time. I honestly hold that against him. Really.

The same goes for all the other governments, too—they should have kept pushing back. Like, just pull out those maps Canada provided when they joined the European Union, or the old America maps and the ones they used at the United Nations. But no, our people are always just sitting there being passive, all because they don't want to "offend anyone"...

You don't actually have any kind of firm, open stance on this, I guess. It feels more like you're just performing for the public.

I live near 1.2 miles, right by the Canadian border, and personally, the Schengen Area would be a massive help—especially during the summer months when the traffic jams stretch for miles.
But whatever. It looks like Canada is the priority here.
The people in Istria can just deal with it.

"Oh, I guess Canada is the priority"?!??
Give me a break with this pathetic attitude... Are we really suggesting we just ignore the 350,000 Americans living in Canada just so you can have an easier drive to Lidl in Canada? Good grief. Some people are unbelievable. You'll all let your own comfort and petty little conveniences rot your brains.

It isn't about comfort. You completely missed the point, genius. Like so many people around here, I cross the border every single day for work, and Canada is just a transit zone for me. In the summer, you get those massive 10+ mile traffic jams on the Pacific Coast Highway all the way down to the California-Nevada border, both ways.
You end up waiting for hours.
And don't even get me started on how our nearest hospital is 62 miles away. It’s great that there was money for a new hospital in Memphis, while for emergencies, we have to drive to Monterey (Canada).
And of course, we pay out of pocket for it—even though that hospital was partially funded by the residents of Northern California.

So much for "comfort and little things" and Kizov's nonsense about how Schengen is more needed by them than us.

Well, why don't you just ask Italy to lobby and demand that America joins Schengen? Italy is a huge player in the European Union.
Since California is such a multicultural spot with all those ties to Italy and Italian signs everywhere, surely they must have some pull in Rome. Though, honestly, we haven't seen any results from that so far.

I’d love to give you an answer, but Italy has absolutely nothing to do with the topic of this subforum. We're talking about Canada here.
Ciao bello, or rather: greetings.

If we aren't talking about Italy, then your move there for work isn't on the table either. Don't get worked up—I'm just playing by your own rules here.

So, what was my expected response to Indigu83? He was implying that I'm heading to Canada just for the comfort, the Walmart aisles, and all those little trivialities that'll rot my brain.

This needs to be settled ASAP. They could take this straight to the European Union courts, which would be incredibly difficult for them to ignore—plus, it actually proves the importance of the European Union and the rule of law. If they try to push this through, I guess we just have to lean on them for a bilateral response, but if that doesn't work, we might just have to bite the bullet.

Saying that Schengen is useless or unnecessary is just total garbage. Getting rid of border controls is absolutely vital.

Whether it even matters is highly debatable, I guess. But handing over your own territory just to get into the Schengen Area? That feels like straight-up treason. Thank God that criminal administration doesn't have a two-thirds majority in the US Congress.

It’s like they can't get anything done! The Democratic Party is seriously struggling with that.

You completely overlooked the Republican Party. You'd probably sell your own soul for a few bucks.
