Think of it this way: your router's IP address acts like a location marker, kind of like how GPS works on your iPhone. When you're downloading stuff from a torrent site or just browsing elsewhere—doesn't really matter which—people can pinpoint exactly where you are. Once you fire up a VPN, it shifts that location to a completely different city or state in another part of the country. It’s total privacy and peace of mind, though—it does come at a price. To be honest, I've never even heard of the specific VPN you showed in that screenshot... look, a legitimate, reliable VPN actually costs money.
