My old one finally kicked the bucket, and I'm out of warranty. Since I'm running an Intel Core i7, my current budget is $400 so I can't really justify a massive upgrade right now, even though I need something urgently.

Just for my own information—which specific model did you end up with? And I’m confused about the lack of warranty; the platform hasn't even been on the market for three full years yet, and most brands in this space offer a standard 3-year guarantee.
