Once an employer files a termination through this online portal, how long does Social Security actually take to process that update on their end?

I'm asking because my boss submitted my exit paperwork back on October 31st, and I’m still sitting here waiting for everything to clear with the SSA.

If this wait keeps dragging on forever, can an employee just grab the documents themselves and head down to the local Social Security office to get it sorted out manually?

There’s gotta be some kind of glitch somewhere...
There is absolutely no way they haven't processed a termination in two whole months!
The employer really needs to log back in, check the submission status, and give them a call. Even with the bureaucracy we deal with here in the States, a two-month delay just isn't normal.😬

Ugh, my bad, I totally typed that wrong, sorry! 🙈

Dec 31st. 🤦 I know it’s only a matter of a few days, but I was just curious how long this whole thing actually lasts... and if I can even handle doing it myself.

Haha 🙂
Now we’re getting somewhere.
I wouldn't be surprised if the folks over at the USGS were already out the door for the holidays 😉... If it didn't clear today, they'll just have to tackle it Wednesday (since tomorrow is another holiday anyway)...
In my experience, you're looking at about one to two business days.
As I understand it, an employee can't even physically walk in there and handle it themselves. Once a company hits more than three employees, the whole process becomes the employer's responsibility to manage online.

quick question. worker's contract says Nov 18 to Dec 18... does someone actually have to manually de-register them from Medicare and the USGS, or does that just happen on its own?

You actually have to file the paperwork for the termination... they don't just do it automatically, mostly because these types of contracts are often renewed immediately without any actual gap in employment.

Hey there!
Quick question for you guys. I need to register an American citizen who’s living and working abroad somewhere in the European Union.
How does the registration process actually work here—should I be selecting "foreign national" or just "employee of a legal entity"?
Also, what's the deal with the JOPPD form? Does anyone know which specific code I should be using there?

Is their mandatory insurance already sorted out over in the EU (since they're employed there)? Because if they have residency and active insurance coverage there, you'll probably need to grab an A1 certificate to prove who's actually responsible for the contributions...

I’m going to be employed through a government grant program, and I’m currently looking over the application being submitted to the Bureau of Writing which states:
Once the Application receives a positive evaluation, the employer is required to submit the documentation for the co-financing contract signature within 8 days, specifically:
-the employment contract

In the past, they've requested both the employment contract and the forms for Social Security and Medicare enrollment.
Does anyone happen to know when or how the Social Security enrollment is handled in this specific scenario? From what I’ve gathered, Medicare registration happens automatically once Social Security is set up. Or...

'morning everyone! So, at the start of the month, we started registering our younger employees—the ones under 30—so we can take advantage of those tax breaks under the Tax Code... When I was going through the registration process on the Social Security Administration portal via the employer login, I just selected 'employment with a legal entity' as their insurance basis, but then yesterday I logged back in and saw this notification on my dashboard saying there’s actually a specific insurance basis meant for these workers... I'm feeling a bit lost here, so if anyone has dealt with similar registrations before, whether it was under the Tax Code or those other employment incentive programs, could you please help a girl out? I'm dying to know if I just totally missed the option to select a different insurance basis earlier, or if they actually just implemented this new requirement recently??!

We actually had to hand in the Social Security registration ourselves because they requested it. You don't need to worry about Medicare since that kicks in automatically.

There have always been specific categories for certain types of coverage, such as for vocational training programs. For this new initiative targeting workers under 30, that specific designation didn't exist until the legislation was officially passed. If you realize you filled out the form incorrectly, don't sweat it—you can either file an amendment or just shoot them an email explaining that you selected the wrong basis and ask them to fix it. The Social Security Administration is usually pretty helpful if you reach out. Just leave your contact number, and they'll give you a call if they need more details.

Thanks for the heads-up! There was actually this tax break under the Tax Code, just with some different requirements, but I honestly never even noticed it being offered when I was filing everything before... So I gave them a ring yesterday and the folks over at the IRS told me they’re going to update things, and that I should just submit the change through IBM and attach the employment contracts. Now I just need to call them back and figure out if we can apply these changes to the employees who were already registered last year under the FTC 😁

Thanks for the heads up... I assume the specific steps are laid out on the paperwork sent by the agency.

Does anyone happen to know if an employer can apply for both tax credits and the hiring incentive for the long-term unemployed at the same time? Like, can they submit a request for the half-and-half measure and then also file for the other relief?
this one:

Or are they strictly limited to choosing just one?

They can't do both; one option effectively rules out the other. It’s an "either-or" situation. An employer really needs to crunch the numbers to see which route offers the better financial advantage and then file for that specific one. They can't stack both solutions for the same employee.

Hey, quick question—I just dropped off my paperwork at the clinic and Social Security. Any idea if I'll get a confirmation via email, or is there usually a wait? I really need to get an employee registered ASAP.

Social Security usually gets you set up almost immediately once they receive the files; you can just log into the app and handle the filing right then and there. However, Medicare tends to be incredibly sluggish with this kind of thing—you might be looking at a wait of up to a month, though they will eventually send you an email notifying you that your registration is complete. If you need a processed form from Medicare in the meantime, you'll likely have to physically bring it in until they fully register you in the system. Once that registration goes through, you won't even need to deal with Medicare manually anymore because everything is automated now; they just email the processed forms to everyone who is registered. In my opinion, there's no need for you to visit the Medicare office in person; they'll process the application based on the NOAA report, but you won't see that official processed paperwork until you are fully integrated into their system.

Help me out here, people 🙂
A colleague who handles all our enrollments and cancellations came down with the flu, so I had to jump in and handle a family member's enrollment through Medicare myself. Long story short: the system completely tanked on me.

Normally, we have everything set up so she can just breeze through it all online, but since she’s out sick and this was an emergency, I had to step up and try to fly solo. 🙂
I couldn't even get the online portal to load. I eventually lost my cool, gave up on the tech, and just filled out a paper Form 3 for the guy, telling him he’d need to take it down to the local office and try his luck at the service window.

What happens if they won't accept the paperwork at the counter? Is the whole digital system actually glitching out right now, or am I just losing my mind and doing something wrong? 🤔
