In that case, it shouldn't be an issue—but you really need to be careful with how you report your employees. I mentioned the specifics in my edited post above 😉

Thanks for the reply—I was honestly about to pass out from the stress 🙂

I was under the impression that worker registration had to be completed within 24 hours of hiring. Since when did the rule change to requiring it before they even start their first shift?

It’s been that way since early 2015. It used to be more flexible back in the day, but to crack down on under-the-table employment, they implemented the rule that an employee has to be officially registered before they actually start working for the employer.

Medicare has finally rolled out the latest updates to the My Health Record app:

"Medicare is now allowing business users to handle online enrollments, disenrollments, and updates for family members."

I need some advice here
An employee under 30 is transitioning to a permanent contract starting January 1st. We handled the update through HealthCare.gov.
Question: Do I actually need to bring physical paperwork to Medicare, or does the system update automatically?

From what I understand, the update only applies to Medicare, not the Social Security Administration.

I wonder if it actually works smoothly... my aunt in administration has been messaging me for days because the site is lagging, and even when they get through to the digital signature step, it just fails to process...

Has anyone dealt with in-person paperwork at Medicare lately? It’s just the two of us trying to adjust our hours, but there isn't a single form available online... no instructions, no list of what we actually need to bring... nothing. Just total radio silence...

Does that rule apply to filing too? If I were to register an employee starting Monday, say Jan 1st—would I report that to NOAA on Jan 1st or back on Dec 29th? And I'm assuming I don't need to deal with Medicare at all?

Reporting is mandatory for both Social Security and Medicare—though with the electronic system, the Medicare side handles itself automatically. As for Social Security, the employer has to file it electronically, which is standard procedure. I'm not 100% sure about the physical filing process, though—maybe someone who actually knows their way around the paperwork can chime in.

The registration absolutely has to happen before they actually start working. I had a situation back in December where I filed one, and the lady at NOAA told me, "Oh, you still need to go to Medicare too." Since I couldn't make it that day, I just called Lincoln the next morning just to double-check things. The gentleman there was like, "No, you don't need to do that; once the registration is filed for a specific date, you're all set... you just won't have the paper confirmation immediately." Sure enough, I checked the status a few days later and the registration was totally processed. So yeah, that's just how things go with the ladies behind the counter at NOAA.

When I called Medicare, they told me to just handle the Social Security side—everything else supposedly syncs up automatically. Though, I think I still have to swing by the IRS since they mentioned showing up there once the NOAA filing is done.
So, if I want to get a new hire officially on the books starting Monday, I’ve got to head down there this Friday. thanks.

I just processed an employee's paperwork and now I need to register his wife for health insurance too. For the employee, everything syncs up automatically with the NOAA filing and the insurance enrollment, but I'm stuck on how the process works for dependents. I tried using the Medicare online portal to register his spouse, but it keeps telling me she’s already covered. I have no idea why—maybe she's covered through her husband, or perhaps she's registered as unemployed? It used to be so much easier; the system would handle both the employee and their dependents automatically and then email me the confirmation. Now, they don't even send confirmations for the employees anymore! How am I supposed to verify what her current coverage is based on? I really don't want to mess this up and leave someone without insurance. I managed to find and print the employee's registration, but I'm completely lost on how to get the one for his wife.

I finally figured it out—it's in the exact same section where I found the employee's info. Total rookie mistake on my part...

Has anyone else filed their Social Security paperwork recently only to get hit with more forms from Medicare via email? Is this some new thing they're doing?

Me! I’ve been waiting forever and nothing has come through. Eventually, I just set up my online Medicare portal and printed out the employee and dependent forms myself. Looks like they've updated things...

Me too! I’ve been waiting on one client for a month and a half now. I even handed over the power of attorney for their Medicare portal months ago, but they still haven't activated it. Honestly, trying to actually get someone to call you back is basically like playing the lottery.

Is there any way to log in through my government portal to check on my social security deactivation status? I need this documentation for a new job. I managed to pull my pay stubs and service history from the IRS website, but I’m having a hard time locating the specific proof regarding my social security exit. If anyone could point me in the right direction, I’d really appreciate the help!

Is this what I'm looking for?

Look, if you check your digital records, it lists the exact start and end dates for every single job you've had.
If the entry for your most recent employer shows an end date for your coverage, that’s the smoking gun—it means they officially signed you off.

I just uploaded a screenshot from my account, so you should be able to access everything through the official government portal.

Hi there.
Could someone perhaps give me a brief rundown on how the registration and deregistration process works through the online portal at the Department of Health and Human Services?
1. For the registration, do I need to submit everything eight days before the start date?
If I just complete the filing on the portal, does the information automatically sync up with Medicare?
2. And what about the deregistration process?
3. Which specific documents, such as the employment termination notice and the insurance cards, am I supposed to hand over to the employee when we part ways?
Thanks so much in advance for any help.
