Sixteen? Please. This kid was throwing massive tantrums when he was only three, and his parents just coddled him, spoiled him, and treated him like some little angel. By the time he hit four, he was already getting into scraps at preschool. Once he started elementary school, there was really no stopping him.
And now everyone’s acting shocked, like they have no clue how we even got here. Seriously?

Looking for some advice or just an opinion, whatever
Malac is in 2nd grade at his Elementary School, and he’s struggling with English—specifically homework
First semester is wrapping up, and looking at the online gradebook, there are five notes saying he didn't turn in homework and two more where he didn't study what he was supposed to
It wouldn't really be a "problem" if he were like this with everything else (well, maybe, but a different kind of problem). He remembers all his assignments and knows what to do for every other subject, but with English, he just can't get it
He says he doesn't understand the teacher when she gives instructions because she does it all in English. I try telling him it's fine to just ask her to repeat herself at the end of class, but it hasn't worked. He's a bit shy, and now he's already saying he hates English

The weird thing is, back in October and November, they had a substitute teacher, and during that time, all his homework was turned in and completed
And we aren't the only ones in class dealing with this. There are plenty of other kids who don't understand either and just don't even realize they have homework
Does it make sense to go in for a parent-teacher conference? I'm not even sure what I'd say to the teacher 😵
Does she see his other grades (from his regular teacher)?
She'd see that he usually handles all his responsibilities. I'm wondering if she's even noticed why he's missing so much work in her class specifically

I honestly could've been at the principal's office yesterday, saying the exact same thing you just did. What's even stopping you? My kid doesn't even have enough vocabulary yet to wrap their head around what this assignment is actually asking for—they're only in second grade. The material is basically nonsense at this stage because they just don't have the word bank for it. Seriously, please do something about this. Thanks. Look, none of us—and I'm sure you don't either—want them to grow up hating such a beautiful language just because of these stupid early hurdles. If something's bothering me, I just walk away. That's what I'd do.

First signs popped up back in September, so I just jotted down how he was struggling... basically, things were fine at the start of the school year, then everything was okay with the second teacher through October and November, and now we're back to this.
Honestly, I don't even know when the meetings are scheduled. We weren't given any info, so I'll probably just have to head down to the school and talk to his teacher in person since there’s no other way to get a hold of them.

Man, I was just watching that episode of The Amazing Race where they featured that kid from the high school economics class.

Yeah, seriously, go ask. Go find out. Just show up. Look, you're both there for the kid, right? Show some initiative and tell her, "Hey, is there anything I can do on my end to help?" See if you two can actually get on the same page. You aren't enemies here. The kid is struggling with some basic stuff, and at the end of the day, everyone wants him to succeed.

As for those bolded notes, check the online grading portal under the teacher's comments; also, conference dates are usually posted on the school's website if you want to poke around there a bit.

Teachers have so many different roles to play. They essentially act as second parents to their students, which means they often don't have enough energy left over for their own kids 🍿

Parenting this, teaching that—it’s all the same thing, really. If someone’s moral compass is broken, I suppose it’s hard to see them being good people in any capacity.

In this particular mess, though, the fact that they were terrible parents seems to be the main issue, which is probably why nobody is even bothering to look at their professional lives. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this whole saga unfolds.☕
