My daughter was in a car accident during her driving lessons—literally her second day on the road. She had come to a full stop at a crosswalk, and then some idiot slammed into them from behind. Both she and the instructor ended up in the ER. She’s dealing with whiplash in her neck and shoulder, while the instructor took a bit more of a hit; he's out of work for two months doing physical therapy and stuff. The driving school owner has collision coverage through AT&T, so his vehicle damage is covered, but the two of them have to file their own personal injury claims. My daughter already submitted all her medical records, filled out the claim forms, and provided her bank info.
Any idea roughly how much she might get for damages in a situation like this? They told her the payout should happen in about 2 to 3 weeks...

I’ve got a 50% no-claims discount with Allstate. I'm looking at picking up a used car—can I port that discount over to the new ride, or is there any way to lower the premium on a second policy?

Thanks in advance.

Has anyone here actually dealt with State Farm before?

They pitched me a policy that’s about twenty bucks cheaper than what I had last year with another firm—basically the old Rocky Mountains Insurance crew.

Back on July 1st, 2015, I signed up for car insurance with Prudential—got a sweet 50% discount and even added that bonus protection feature. Not long after I closed the deal, I ended up in a little fender bender, so I figured, hey, why not use that protection I paid for?
Then by July 1st, 2016, I was renewing through Allstate with my 50% discount intact.

Now I’m getting ready to shop around for new coverage, so I decided to double-check my records on this site and—get this—it says "Claims in the insurance fund: 1."

Does that mean my discount is going to take a hit this year? And honestly, how does Prudential even have that claim on my record if I specifically paid for the protection to keep my bonus safe?

Look, your discount should stay exactly where it is with that company, though don't go thinking your premium won't climb... essentially, if you decide to jump ship to a different provider, you're looking at a policy that's theoretically 15% more expensive. But honestly, everything is negotiable these days because insurance companies are practically clawing at each other to win over every single customer. You probably would have seen a rate hike when you went with the Rocky Mountains guys, yet they gave you the full discount just to keep your business...

Does anyone know if they offer any kind of discount when you go to insure a second car, especially if you already have one policy active with them?
With a 50% bonus

It really just depends on which insurance provider you go with—you know, since they all have their own little versions of family discounts or group rates and whatnot—but I wouldn't exactly count on anything groundbreaking there. You might see a difference of maybe 5%, if you're lucky, though honestly, you'd probably get a better deal just by switching to a completely different carrier altogether. I suppose if you're bringing both of your vehicles to the same place, you could try to push them a bit harder and haggle for a better commercial discount, just because it’s in your best interest to try.

A buddy of mine recently insured a new car. He'd already sold his old one but didn't have the formal bill of sale handy, and the agent told him it didn't even matter—apparently, you can still keep all your vehicles under the same family discount regardless.

Sure, you can get them up to 168 with a 50% discount, but I think Matthew was asking whether there's any extra wiggle room if you happen to have multiple vehicles. That’s why I mentioned that some providers offer "group" discounts if you hold several different policies with them (and it doesn't necessarily have to be auto insurance). Some companies just try harder because, honestly, it's much better for their bottom line to keep a client with three cars rather than just one, so it's probably in their best interest to hunt down some sort of commercial rate for you.

A quick question for the group: in my city, there’s an agency representing Allstate, which seems to operate as its own distinct entity—handling its own payroll and functioning independently from the main Allstate corporate group.

Is this standard practice? Should I be concerned about whether claims will actually be honored if an accident occurs and I need to collect on a policy?

Actually, Allianz hasn't really used a traditional agent network for quite a while now. Instead, they've pretty much pushed their top-tier agents to set up their own dedicated agencies that work exclusively for them.
It’s kind of like a fancy way of saying they're outsourcing, I guess.☕

Anyway, it's perfectly legal... and honestly, most other insurance companies are probably looking to follow that same model sooner or later.

Understood, thanks.

I previously mentioned that this situation doesn't quite mirror what we see in the telecommunications industry. Companies like Verizon or AT&T might lease infrastructure from a major provider like AT&T, yet when a service outage occurs, the primary carrier sends out their own technicians—who, naturally, prioritize their own direct customers over everyone else. They also tend to prioritize their own traffic during periods of network congestion.
That was precisely why I inquired about potential issues regarding insurance billing; the parallels felt far too striking to ignore.

Hi there,
I need some advice regarding comprehensive insurance for a 2013 VW Golf via GEICO.
GEICO is offering me full coverage for $933 but the vehicle value they listed is $57333
Meanwhile, the US Department of Commerce provides full coverage for $800 though their valuation sits at $51667

Which option makes more sense here?

Look, I actually work over at GEICO—if you want, I can dig into the details for you to see if we can get a better deal—but I don't have enough info yet. I’d need to know the specific trim and options to nail down the actual value of the car. From what I can tell, the US Department of Commerce likely valued it based on a lower trim level; if anything happens to the car, you aren't going to be happy with the payout.
For instance: say you have a high-end, premium sound system in there worth $1667, but if you end up in an accident and they only pay out $5,000 because the US Department of Commerce didn't account for that upgrade, you'll basically just be getting paid for a standard, cheap radio.$333

If I go with this Allstate package—including full comprehensive coverage plus a few extra riders—it’s looking like it'll cost me about $900 for my car. When I was shopping around last year, the absolute cheapest quote I could find for everything they're bundling here was roughly $1233...

I can't help but wonder what the catch is; how did prices drop this much? It seems almost too good to be true that I could snag full comprehensive coverage for just $467??

What’s the best deal out there for car insurance if I also want to bundle in a single annual roadside assistance plan?

The police report clearly states he’s at fault, but these morons don't want to pay the full repair bill. Since there wasn't direct contact, they're trying to pull the "shared liability" card to pay half.
What was I supposed to do? Aim straight for that junker and ram them so I could get full coverage for my car??? Naturally, I sued them and settled for the original amount we agreed on. Just stay far away from Atlantic and Euroherc; they aren't exactly high-class players, let's be real, but this is a new low.

You're spot on, man, and honestly, even eight years later, you're still hitting the nail on the head.

GEICO offers towing coverage for an unlimited number of incidents, though they cap individual events at $1167. It will run you about $17.

I've got some collision coverage through an insurer like GEICO $367, but it’s basically limited to just one claim. It could be anything from a tiny scratch to a total wreck, but once you use it up, I think you have to pay an extra premium to keep the coverage active. Not really sure how much that would run, though.
