Consequently, such a condition cannot be cured by psychiatrists or medication alone. It can only be resolved when an individual discovers their own purpose in life and work—a task for which no one else can provide the answer.
It is a cornered, inescapable feeling, which explains why so many people desperately turn to faith.
What else is left for them to do?

You're hitting the nail on the head with a lot of this.
Every coin has two sides, right?
Life itself and everything spinning around us is just fundamentally meaningless. I truly believe we all fall into that trap eventually, it's just part of growing up, maturing, and finally facing the music.
A lot of these facts are just unchangeable reality. People call it disillusionment, but really it's just being slammed from the clouds down onto the hard pavement.
If you've got even a shred of common sense left in your head, no one can help you but yourself.
I can give you my own example from back when I lost my job; regardless of the fact that I had a little kid to worry about, it took a hell of a long time before I finally got back on my feet.
You have to give yourself space to deal with reality, the self-pity, the grieving, and all those other nasty emotions; they need their time in the sun.

I figure everyone has this basic survival instinct buried inside them, you just have to flip the switch again after you've been stuck in that lethargy, giving up, and feeling like nothing matters.
I found mine—and don't laugh at me—by blasting Metallica at full volume because my son egged me on. In my opinion, someone who sings like James Hetfield, with that much fire, that much life, and that much raw passion... it's enough to wake the dead.
I really believe everyone finds their own way to rehab themselves and keep moving forward.
