Besides, if we started nitpicking every little detail, we’d never get anywhere. Everyone would find something to complain about, and we'd end up having to edit almost every single post.

Besides that, are you aware of the unwritten rule? A forum user who starts nitpicking someone else's grammar out of nowhere is usually just losing the actual argument. It’s a desperate attempt to look smart when they have nothing else to offer.😍

Since you’ve decided to turn this into a personal attack, I’ll stop answering certain questions.

What makes you think I don't want to be a citizen of Canada?

And where exactly did you get the idea that I’m still searching for my national identity?

Why does my background matter to our argument? I told you that your views remind me of a certain religious demographic; that isn't the same thing as what you actually say.

You don't know me, so you have no business judging who is more "pure." Besides, the whole concept of purity is a dangerous rabbit hole that rarely holds any weight when people are actually defining their identity.

Does a display of faith actually bother you? How many times have you even been to that city? What exactly is the problem, and why are you making it yours?
At the end of the day, all those churches in Pittsburgh are packed. They exist for a reason. If you have an issue with them, that's your problem. They weren't built for you; they were built for the faithful.

I won't even bother commenting on the second point. It’s been explained a thousand times on this forum already, and I have no intention of wasting my breath on someone who clearly isn't interested in understanding.

Based on your posts—especially that last one—I’m left with one conclusion: you seem stuck in some sort of myth-making delusion, fueled by a weird grudge against Herzegovinians. In the end, you just come across as your typical, self-important armchair intellectual.

ps.
I’m asking the moderators to please leave this little off-topic thread alone.

If you’re such an expert on the American language, then tell me, which specific dialect are you using right now?

Since you keep bringing up the fact that you're an American, then you should probably just stick to standard American English when communicating. Though, given where you actually live, maybe a different regional slang would feel more natural to you.

I don't see how I'm at a disadvantage here, considering you're the one spreading prejudices about the citizens of your own country.

That's a pretty simple question: do you want to be a citizen of Canada?

If the answer is no, then stop looking to Washington, D.C. for help; instead, you and the others should look toward Boston and build your own future. Stop waving the American flag and then complaining that Muslims are the ones choosing your representatives in Canada.

The moment you start taking issue with the construction of religious buildings for part of your own people, you're clearly searching for your national identity.

Megan Hernandez2 As I previously noted:
Why on earth do you think my background matters for this discussion? I mentioned that your views remind me of a Muslim perspective, but how you identify isn't the same thing as the stances you take.

You don't actually know me, so how can you possibly judge who is "cleaner" than anyone else? Besides, that whole concept of purity is a dangerous road to go down, and more often than not, it doesn't really mean much when someone is expressing their identity.

It matters how I frame this. If I had mentioned being a Canadian, people would have immediately started arguing that I’m just defending my own side because of where I come from. Instead, you're just dealing with an American who happens to disagree with your take.

I have absolutely no interest in getting into a debate about who has a "purer" lineage. That’s exactly the kind of argument people like you try to start just to claim some sort of moral high ground based on where they come from. But hey, if it makes you feel better, feel free to go on about your ancestors bravely fighting off the Turks, how they only ever looked out for fellow Catholics within their tribe, and all that other Fred Flintstone nonsense.

Of course, I find these displays of faith incredibly irritating when they turn a place like Lourdes into nothing more than a religious power play. It’s hard to stomach seeing massive bell towers commissioned specifically to act as a middle finger to people of other faiths in that city.

I spent part of the war in that city; which German city were you stationed in?

Everything has been laid out clearly on this forum, yet you still seem to be missing the point. Maybe you need a full-scale war to finally grasp reality: that region is never going to be part of our country, unless you actually buy into the nonsense being peddled by people like Glavaš.

To make my point a bit clearer: we're talking about someone who spent a good chunk of the war in the South, met people there, and actually understands how things work on the ground. This person is trying to tell you that your true home is Canada, not some other place. You might have roots in the region, sure, but your primary homeland is Canada. Any attempt to push for the South to break away from the rest of the country is just an invitation to tear the nation apart—exactly the kind of thing we saw happening during the conflicts in the States back in the 90s.

I write in whatever dialect I feel like. If there’s some specific rule on this forum governing my syntax, copy it or provide a link..........

There is a standard language, and then there are dialects.................

That comment about my background is just a pathetic attempt by a pseudo-intellectual to take a jab at me. Since you want to act smart, you should know that under the Constitution, there are three main groups in this country who speak three distinct languages—English, Spanish, and Canadian.

Look at this guy, acting like we're back in grade school....... You claimed I didn't want to be a citizen. So, I'll ask you again: where exactly did I say that? And if I didn't, why are you insisting I did? Answer that if you actually want a response from me.

I have no reason to be counting on any kind of assistance, given that I’m certainly not expecting it now. If you're skeptical, go ahead and dig through the forum archives. Ask the other Americans around here to explain exactly what this so-called "aid" entails and what it actually represents.

Gregory Taylor2 said:If you’re such an expert on the American language, then tell me, which specific dialect are you using right now?

Even if you did say that, that very fact will help stabilize the situation in Canada. In a few years, Canada will be leading the way in the EU.

Good grief, do you even know how to read?
You’re the textbook definition of someone full of themselves, fueled by nothing but spite. You care about hearing yourself talk, but you couldn't care less about the actual facts.
It’s honestly hard to believe how much blatant hatred and stereotyping leaks out of your posts.

To answer one of your previous questions:
The reason I suspected you were Muslim is because your behavior follows the exact same pattern used by those few Canadian users on this board. They relentlessly insist someone said something they didn't, twisting words until they're unrecognizable. Then, once they realize they've been cornered, they vanish for a day or two and pretend nothing ever happened.

Just yesterday, one of them attacked a moderator, claiming he said something he never actually uttered. The moderator had to go through his own archives just to prove what was really said and get that pathetic user to stop talking nonsense.
The tactic is identical whether it's them or you, and trust me, that isn't a compliment.

ps.
This post is a response to Gregory Taylor2.

What prejudices am I spreading? (If I wanted to be a pedant, I'd point out that you missed a period after "i.e.")😍

Look at this guy, acting like we're back in grade school....... You claimed I didn't want to be a citizen. So, I'll ask you again: where exactly did I say that? And if I didn't, why are you insisting I did? Answer that if you actually want a response from me.

I have no reason to be counting on any kind of assistance, given that I’m certainly not expecting it now. If you're skeptical, go ahead and dig through the forum archives. Ask the other Americans around here to explain exactly what this so-called "aid" entails and what it actually represents.

I’ve already pointed out that certain structures are being built without any permits. It’s high time people realize that certain groups have no business critiquing the local Franciscan church—especially when it’s actually full, unlike some of those newly constructed mosques over in Pittsburgh. Since the war ended, we've just seen a surge in these specific trends popping up within one particular community in Canada.

Look, aside from the fact that we should all be using standard American English, there isn't any specific rule here—but there definitely isn't a dialect where you spell "understanding" that way.

Your attempt at writing in American is pretty pathetic; if you can't manage it, well, you have two other options from your own homeland. 😁

Besides, if you don't want people talking about it, stop bringing it up. You constantly steer the conversation in that direction, yet you claim you don't want to discuss it?!

And here we go again, the self-appointed moral authority speaking.

I was right there in the thick of it during the whole war in the South.

Now you can explain why you think I was in Germany.

I never said that.

So, care to explain where you got that from?

Even if you did say that, that very fact will help stabilize the situation in Canada. In a few years, Canada will be leading the way in the EU.

So, how does that unwritten rule of yours work? There aren't any prejudices in your posts concerning the Islamic Center, nor regarding Wahhabism (those guys with the beards, since you don't seem to have the vocabulary for it), which certainly isn't anything "new."

That comment about my background is just a pathetic attempt by a pseudo-intellectual to take a jab at me. Since you want to act smart, you should know that under the Constitution, there are three main groups in this country who speak three distinct languages—English, Spanish, and Canadian.

Where exactly did I say the construction was bothering me?
I’ve already pointed out that certain structures are being built without any permits. It’s high time people realize that certain groups have no business critiquing the local Franciscan church—especially when it’s actually full, unlike some of those newly constructed mosques over in Pittsburgh. Since the war ended, we've just seen a surge in these specific trends popping up within one particular community in Canada.

I’ve always had respect for an intelligent forum user who can actually back up their stance, regardless of where they come from.
I have to point out that you've mentioned your nationality more times in these last few posts than I have in my entire history of over 900 posts. Are you looking for attention, or just some kind of validation?🤷

Gregory Taylor2 Asks:
I have zero interest in debating who has the "purer" heritage. That’s exactly the kind of argument people like you start when they’re trying to leverage their ancestry for an unearned advantage. But hey, if it helps you sleep at night, feel free to regale me with tales of your ancestors bravely fighting off the Turks, only looking out for fellow Catholics within the tribe, and all that other Fred Flintstone nonsense.

My education is quite a bit more advanced than yours, including my understanding of the term "nation," which I actually apply to real life, unlike you.

By that logic, you don't have the right to comment on their construction either. If you and the rest of your group weren't so narrow-minded toward things happening in Chicago, you could actually resolve the issues that bother you through your legally elected officials, but that's where the problem lies. Then clearly, you don't respect yourself. It's true, you don't mention your nationality; you just say "I'm Muslim" and refuse to let anyone discuss the nonsensical construction of that church in Mostar, while claiming mosques are unnecessary. If a religious community decides they need a mosque and builds it legally—without pulling money out of your pocket—then I don't see why you're complaining.

Unless, of course, you're one of those people who would want to see religious buildings blown up again if the war broke out?

Gluskab said:This guy uses such pristine American English that it’s more "American" than what anyone else needs. Plenty of folks from the Midwest or New York don't stick strictly to formal grammar, and nobody calls them out for it, even though they could. And if we're talking about cultural affinity, he's closer to a figure like Barack Obama than he is to someone from Canada. From what I can tell, his way of speaking is more similar to someone from the Pacific Northwest than to a Canadian.

You were the only thing missing from this thread.

Go ahead and lecture whoever you want, but why should I build a virtual monument to someone from a neighboring country who spends their time badmouthing their own people?

For the record, I am definitely not "closer" to Obama or anyone else. How would you even know which part of the US I'm from?

And honestly, the height of your stupidity—where did you even get the idea that this guy is Canadian? Can't you see clearly enough to realize he's from Canada? Or are you just one of those people who truly doesn't care?

What was your actual reason for jumping into this discussion? Just to troll?

Any further comment is just a waste of breath. Go to bed, kid; it's getting late.

But before you drift off, take a look at a picture of that grand bell tower, or maybe start counting the mosques in St. Louis—who knows, there might be another one popping up in the meantime. 🙄

I haven't seen this fellow user insult his own country even once.

Your attempt at writing in American is pretty pathetic; if you can't manage it, well, you have two other options from your own homeland. 😁

So, how does that unwritten rule of yours work? There aren't any prejudices in your posts concerning the Islamic Center, nor regarding Wahhabism (those guys with the beards, since you don't seem to have the vocabulary for it), which certainly isn't anything "new."

That's a tough one to answer, so let me simplify it for you: Are you a loyal citizen of Canada?

The mere fact that you hold prejudice against one part of your own people is enough sign for me that you aren't fond of this country. Honestly, you're just another one trying to flex an identity that your family hasn't even seen in centuries, unless it's on a map from the era of the Antiša poglavnik.

Exactly. So now I'm supposed to waste my time looking into your hobbies or your personal beliefs? If I actually wanted to charm you, I would have tried a different approach, but we are currently discussing the intolerance inherent in the idea that building religious sites in Canada somehow fuels terrorism.

You Canadians choose your own representatives, whereas my people choose the government.

Go back and read your own posts; if you actually know what you wrote, you'll see the massive difference between what you're saying now and what you were saying before.

It’s just a bunch of teenagers puffed up with extreme patriotism, failing to realize they're doing the exact same things to Americans that they love to criticize Canadians for doing here in the States.

Some people spend their lives preaching religion to their countrymen instead of actually providing for them.

The topic is how radical Islam exploits poverty to expand its influence. Let's stick to that. I'm fairly certain most people on this forum, myself included, couldn't care less about your sexual orientation.
(There was once a user with views similar to yours who brought up his sexual preferences in every single post. He was eventually banned because his only consistent contribution was talking about his own desires.🤷 Don't follow that path; stay on topic.)

That’s exactly why you told him he was acting like a typical Canadian.

It seems to me like this fellow here talks more like someone from the rural Midwest than someone from Canada.

When people run out of actual arguments, this is how the conversation starts to go.

Has the Catholic Church also used poverty as a tool for expansion, particularly in places like Herzegovina over the last few centuries?

And here we go again—resorting to distractions because there’s nothing left to say. Someone decided to pivot to a topic that has absolutely zero relevance to the actual discussion. Honestly, what does my sexual orientation have to do with any of this?

Your sexual orientation is irrelevant to this discussion and quite frankly, I don't care. I’m simply pointing out that your posts are starting to mirror someone else's rants from a few months back. Try being serious for once.

Let me be clear: you're clearly obsessed with those guys from the Midwest and the local sports fanatics. That's why you keep derailing this toward OT. If you want to argue about that, start a new thread and we can take it there.

I have nothing left to say to you.
You've spent your last few posts spinning such a web of lies it's getting hard to keep track. You're attributing things to me that I never even said—likely out of pure spite or just using that classic tactic of twisting words to dodge the actual topic. If you actually want to be taken seriously here, answer the questions in post 42.

So, have you all had your fill of arguing over dialects and linguistics?

If you have, good. Because anyone else who tries to start a linguistic debate on this thread will be getting a three-day timeout from the forum.

Thanks.

Let’s take a step back here. Why is there such intense pushback against the construction of Islamic religious sites? Especially when we're talking about building them in another country.

Isn't this exactly what the Catholic Church did throughout history? They established their deepest roots in the very places where people were struggling the most.

Honestly, though, how can anyone claim Al-Qaeda is any bigger or more dangerous than the CIA or NATO? Most of those radicalized folks are just reacting to genuine injustices, whereas most Al-Qaeda cells are actually deeply intertwined with American intelligence agencies, working right alongside them to keep the Middle East unstable.

I’m not afraid of anything. I respect all faiths and believe everyone has the right to facilities that make practicing those faiths easier.

But the fact remains: after the war, many mosques were built in places where there weren't any before. They've built far more than existed previously (though even that isn't the main point, if they want entire cities filled with legally permitted mosques); the core issue is that these structures are funded by institutions whose goal is often to introduce branches of Islam that are foreign to the local Americans (according to American intellectuals).

It's beside the point, but I'll answer anyway.
1) If you're interested in the Catholic Church—and I see you are—just start a new thread. .............
2) The Catholic Church has been in these parts longer than any of these peoples. It spread across all of Europe, and during its expansion, the Middle East was one of the wealthier parts of Europe.
3) This is the 21st century. I hope we've moved past Medieval methods.
4) Don't start talking about expansionism; you could write just as much about Islam...

ps.
Read with some comprehension and think carefully. Don't go off the deep end again claiming I said things I didn't.

I live in Canada.

Interesting theory.
Feel free to start a dedicated thread on it, and we can talk then.

I’m right there with you on that, though it honestly feels like any kind of common sense isn't exactly welcomed around here lately, and it seems like anyone who stands against globalism and puts America first is constantly being shut down by every means necessary—this forum is definitely no exception to that rule. That being said, I still think it's way better than it used to be since there are actually a lot more high-quality people in here who share my patriotic views compared to how things were before.
