My job leaves me with quite a bit of downtime, and I’m usually sitting at my desk most of the day. You can't just spend every second reading, either. ☕ This feels like a decent way to kill the boredom—purely by circumstance, really. When I actually have free time, I make it a point to stay away from the computer entirely. But the reality is that more and more people are spending their lives online by choice, not because they have to. I could be out in the real world—being active, hiking, traveling, being creative, or just living life—but instead, they choose digital existence over everything else. People are becoming increasingly isolated and withdrawn. I honestly don't get it. Maybe it’s tied to their careers, maybe they just hate going out, or perhaps they lack confidence and feel they can finally be whoever they want to be behind a screen? 🤷

I’m leaning toward sitting this election out, mostly because I’m torn between pure apathy and genuine uncertainty. When I have nothing better to do, I end up scrolling online or chatting with people I don't get to see in person much—and honestly, some conversations are just easier that way. It gives me a second to actually process my thoughts before responding, rather than being put on the spot, and I don't have to deal with the awkwardness of turning red in someone's face when things get uncomfortable. Don't get me wrong, I love hanging out with my close friends in person, but life happens, and sometimes grabbing a coffee just isn't an option...
The internet lets you pretend to be whoever you want, but I don't feel the need to put on an act. I generally only talk to people I actually know, aside from the folks here on Reddit.

I'm not quite sure what my options are in this poll, so I think I'll hold off on voting for now 😬

I just really enjoy being online 😍

And honestly, I don't get why people always try to draw these parallels suggesting that anyone who spends a lot of time on the internet is antisocial, or doesn't have a real life, or is somehow alienated, blah blah blah...

Fair enough, then—why do you like being online so much?
This thread didn't really take off, though I thought it had potential to be interesting.🤷

I generally browse the web to stay informed, though I find myself drifting toward Reddit simply out of boredom ☕

I’m not really on Facebook much, but you can always find me here on Reddit. I genuinely love being part of these discussions because there is just so much you can pick up from everyone else. Most people here are pretty decent, too, which makes the debates more than just interesting—they're actually great.
Luckily, I have enough free time to be online quite often.

Do I really need to break down why I enjoy being online so much? 😁

It always feels a bit strange to me when someone tells me they jump on the internet, scroll through Facebook for five minutes, and then claim they don't know what they're doing online... 🤷

I don't really pick up a newspaper, I barely even turn on the TV, so staying connected via the web is how I stay in the loop with everything happening in the world. Aside from this Reddit community, I usually just check one other site that's specifically related to my job, and then there's all the time I spend messaging friends. I use it to look up absolutely anything that crosses my mind—new movies, music, books, upcoming events—I download whatever I need, and I dive into learning about things I'm curious about...
Is that enough of an explanation? 😁
And honestly, how could I not love being online with all that available... 😍

It isn't😬
I do all that too, but I'm at work. How do you fit going out and seeing people into all of that? It seems to me like this takes up a lot of time.

Actually, not really.
I don't do everything every single day. My little ritual is just grabbing a coffee in front of my computer to check out Reddit and a few news sites, which usually only takes about thirty minutes to an hour... I don't even watch TV, so I save quite a bit of time that way...😁
For instance, right now I'm getting lunch ready while scrolling through stuff during my breaks...
Last week I spent some time looking for new movies I might like and downloaded about 15 titles, and once I actually get around to watching them all, well, a lot of time will pass... when life gets busy, I'm just not online much, so I catch up on everything over the weekend instead...😁
There is definitely plenty of time left for socializing too. I was out for coffee this morning, now I'm back home, and later this afternoon I'm heading to the beach to relax, and once I get back I'll have some work to do on the computer, which basically means I'll just be taking five-minute breaks to browse the web here and there...😁
If I'm too busy, I simply stay offline and that's that...🤷

Alright, fair enough. You make a good point. 😬
I was mostly aiming my comments at those people who live entirely within their virtual worlds.

Hey, 😬I actually love this too. Just look at my post count. 😁

I'm on Reddit whenever I'm home and have some downtime (only) to myself. I can't really browse much during work hours.
I don't even have a TV at home, I'm not much of a reader, and I don't really have any hobbies that I can do indoors besides listening to music... which doesn't really conflict with time spent on Reddit. I don't use Facebook, and I don't spend much time on other websites either.
I go out quite a bit (including with some of the crew from here 😁 we all love grabbing a drink 😁) and I travel a lot, both for business and for fun. For me, Reddit is just a place and a way to unwind and relax. 😍

I mean, come on—you’ve gotta have some kind of actual reason for being glued to the screen like this. You can't just exist in digital space for no reason, right? There's always a motive behind that endless scrolling.

Look, we seriously need to start drawing some lines in the sand for those people who basically live their entire lives online—and I’m not just talking about some random Reddit thread, either.

It's because I enjoy everything the younger generation enjoys..😁

I stopped trying to justify myself a long time ago..
The very same people who would have looked at me with total confusion—or even pure disdain—just a few years ago if I’d mentioned I was active on a forum, are now all over Facebook because it's "trendy." They act like they're somehow immune to those well-known internet-age ailments..blah blah..etc..

Honestly, Reddit gives me this massive flood of info that you just can't physically track down in the real world—it’s like having a direct line to data points that don't exist in your daily life. Plus, out in the wild, I have to waste so much mental energy decoding body language and nonverbal cues from people, which is exhausting. On here? I spend way less energy processing everything and end up getting way more bang for my buck.

Ugh... I’m one of those people who is basically always plugged in—at work, at home, even in the bathroom 🙄
I try to set some boundaries for myself, and honestly, I’d love to be using my screen time for something actually productive, but mostly I’m just burning daylight. It’s not even that I’m bored and trying to kill time; it’s more like I just get hooked and end up spiraling down a YouTube rabbit hole watching some hyper-niche footage I didn't even know existed. And don't even get me started on how much time I waste on Facebook, it's embarrassing. But I refuse to go invisible because then I’d be even more addicted. Gmail? Yeah, I never log off... I always need to be available for my friends 😬

My excuse is that I’m in a long-distance relationship that relies on Skype or Facebook, but even so, I’m online way too much. Even when I know he can’t or won’t talk, I’m still just surfing. We’ll see if this stops once we finally live in the same place. Though, once that happens, I’ll probably just be glued to my phone trying to stay in touch with my family and friends. Honestly, there’s probably no winning here

I have real-life friends, but I’ve noticed us drifting apart lately. It feels like I’m starting to gravitate toward people online who are just easier to chat with without any drama 😬

I tried blocking Facebook at work (yeah, yeah... I know, I’m my own worst enemy 🙂) but my finger always finds its way back to the site 😁

If I had to crunch the numbers—at work, I’m looking at 8 to 10 hours (depending on how much I’m actually working versus "working") then I get home, fire up the PC, and don't shut it down until I hit the sack. In between, it's either TV or just endless scrolling. I do hold one line in the sand, though: I won't check emails or browse on my phone in the morning. That’s my last shred of hope 😢 I spend a lot of time lurking on Reddit, but I rarely post anything. Even that doesn't make total sense to me 🤷

That’s an excellent point. That’s actually why I joined Reddit in the first place. I originally came looking for some specific info, then realized this place has pretty much everything—literally anything I can think of.😉

Exactly, that’s really the best part about being on Reddit, there’s just a thread for absolutely everything you can imagine, so even if I have the most random, silly thought pop into my head, I know I'll find at least five other people ready to dive deep into a discussion about it 😁
I remember realizing a while back that no matter what I was searching for online, I'd almost always end up landing right here on Reddit, and I spent so much time just lurking and reading everything before I finally decided to sign up and join the conversation
