I keep getting hit by this overwhelming sense of futility. For instance, I’m sitting here supposed to be studying, but I can’t help but ask—what’s the point? At the end of the day, we all die. So why bother?🤷 Instead of just living life to the fullest and having some fun.
It has even reached the point where scrolling through this forum feels pointless. (I mean, obviously, everything is somewhat meaningless😁, but at least it used to be engaging.) Now, I honestly couldn't care less about reading anything. What for? It’s just the same old topics, the same personalities—it’s all just a massive waste of time...
Nothing really feels meaningful anymore.

I know what comes next: people telling me to go see a therapist. But for what? To get "tools" to help me function until my time runs out? Why am I even here?🤷 Why should I do anything at all? It’s all just a Sisyphus job.

Fair enough. But let’s assume you're right—what does it actually matter how I spent my time here? Whether I slept through seventy years or grinded away eight hours a day at the office... if there's some other life or afterlife waiting on the other side, it all seems pretty moot.

The whole crux of the matter is that you possess the absolute freedom to do whatever you please—and then, of course, you can spin the narrative to justify it however you see fit

Or, more simply put, just act on whatever whim strikes you

Which is easy enough to say, naturally—though actually conceiving of why one might even want to do such things is a far more difficult task, and executing them? That’s even harder still...

You should check out Albert Camus—read "The Stranger" and "The Myth of Sisyphus."👍

Honestly, they should probably dive into Waiting for Godot first. Once they finish that, then maybe they'll actually wrap their heads around the whole concept of absurdity versus just being a total bore.😁

Look, if you want to spend your life enjoying yourself, you actually need money, which means you have to put in the work and study... I’m not sure what part of that isn't clicking? And honestly, what does the fact that we all die one day have to do with it? You should be out there soaking up every single blessing life offers while you still have the chance.

Man, I went through that whole "nothing matters" phase too. Honestly, I still see how most things we do just lack any inherent purpose, but I keep showing up and doing them anyway because of the love I have for the people around me and seeing them happy. I totally get where you're coming from—I've been exactly where you are. I didn't go out and find some grand meaning hidden under a rock, I just decided to create my own.

Look, if you were actually dealing with deep depression, you wouldn't be putting in the effort to write this whole post right now. You’d probably just be staring blankly at a wall, hungry and exhausted. Is it possible you're just looking for an excuse to skip studying? 😁
If you really want to spend the next sixty years sitting around doing absolutely nothing, then go ahead...

Whether there’s some grand, universal purpose out there is anyone's guess. Honestly, we don't know, and maybe we aren't even wired to figure it out.

That’s why people end up carving out their own sense of meaning. If you've been spiraling because you can't find an answer and it's starting to wear you down, try a little experiment. Grow a plant. Let’s say a bean plant. They’re easy enough to manage and track. Set a rule for yourself: "I’m going to get up at this specific time every morning, give it a little water, and jot down what I see in my notebook."
It might sound pretty stupid—like, "why the hell am I burying beans in dirt?"—but think of it as a prototype. Just as the plant grows, your own interests will start to take root, eventually giving you a sense of purpose. The actual act of planting a seed is trivial, but it serves as a blueprint and a starting point.
Give it a shot; you’ve got nothing to lose. Most people make it through life simply because they have these tiny, little rituals to hold onto.

And then... at some point... which always comes sooner or later... everything just stops... and you're forced to sit there and really look deep inside your own mind... only to find nothing but pure, absolute darkness staring back at you...

Sooner or later, sure. Unless they get drunk on some half-baked idea first. Life’s a brutal business, isn't it? It doesn't give you any breaks.

For me, it’s always been about three things—love, sex, and the written word. That’s where I find any real sense of purpose in this life.

How do you even find any logic in all that trimming stuff?

👍

Generally speaking, isn't the point just to live as long and as well as possible? 👍🥳

I totally get where you're coming from.

But look, having that realization doesn't change the current reality; it just proves you finally see exactly where you stand. From here, you either start moving—either by playing along with the "rules of the game" or by checking out entirely. There's really no middle ground once you see it clearly. We basically signed up for the first option by default, and if we choose the second, there's no debate about it—it's a done deal. But if we've accepted the first, then the choice is between just drifting through this lethargy or actually taking charge and building a life that serves your own interests. Most people just live their lives according to what their parents or society wants, but since you've "opened your eyes," it's only a matter of time before you take the reins and paint your own canvas, even if that involves dealing with these bouts of nihilism.
