I’m facing a significant issue here and could really use some help or advice..

Ever since puberty, I’ve felt this intense compulsion to seek out guys—specifically attractive men or "bad boys" in every sense of the word. Unfortunately, this pattern hasn't stopped, and now—following my divorce—it's resurfaced
I realize how immature this sounds, but I simply can't seem to control the impulse
I've come to the conclusion that this likely stems from a lack of self-confidence—as if I need to "prove" something to myself—but it's causing me genuine trouble
It makes sense that I acted this way when I was younger, but I don't understand why I still feel this drive today
It’s as if I'm only looking at the surface level

I suppose one should try to be with someone who actually brings you joy, rather than just someone who looks good on paper. Or, I guess, you could stay unhappy with a "real man" until you finally mature enough to just stop caring about that whole thing altogether. But maybe don't go underestimating how much some people can truly make you happy... because honestly, that matters just as much as being a "tough guy."

Honestly, I’ve always felt that wanting to be with an attractive woman is perfectly natural 🙂 and there isn't anything wrong with that. Back home, we had our options, but here in the States, there are truly beautiful women everywhere... and if you put in a little effort, you can find someone who matches your values just as much as their looks...
I don't see anything wrong with your pursuit, nor do I see any sign of low self-esteem. Why would you be 🤷
? You appreciate beauty, so why make such a big deal out of it? 👍

The issue only arises if you're strictly focused on the surface level. If looks or a certain persona are your only priorities...

That’s exactly where I went wrong—I was too focused on the surface level and that whole polished, arrogant front.
I’m at an age where this really shouldn't even be on my radar—not that it changes anything.
It’s especially about showing some backbone.

Can you actually feel that physical pull, that crazy chemistry, with someone who isn't some total hunk or even particularly hot? Like, if you felt that spark with a guy who wasn't exactly "macho," would that stop you in your tracks? What kind of "ick" factor hits you when you think about guys who don't fit that alpha mold? What is it about them that turns you off... and how do you imagine life would actually be with a guy like that? Would you worry about how everyone else sees you if you were with a guy who isn't some big tough guy?

Just be real for a second—really dig into those feelings and see what’s actually going on in your head.

I don't think I can... I need someone who blows me away right from the start...
It’s not that they’re repulsive—it’s more like a fear that they'll be boring or uninteresting... I don't even give them a chance.
See, maybe I'm just too worried about how others will view me if I'm with some "average" guy.

Look, I’m telling you... take a second and actually deconstruct what you're terrified of. Like, hypothetically—what if you actually fell for a guy who fits that description? What exactly are you scared people will say? You can vent about it here, just lay it all out. Do you think they'd look at you and decide you're some kind of loser because you couldn't "do better"? That's the thing... it sounds like you view a man as this trophy or a tool to validate yourself, mostly because you don't seem to realize how much value you actually hold on your own. If you actually had some backbone and self-worth, you'd realize that being with him would be a win for *him*... not some stain on your reputation. 😉

But honestly? If you could just get out of your own head and stop obsessing over appearances, you'd open up a whole new world of possibilities... because right now, you're basically holding yourself hostage. You're picking guys based on what everyone else thinks instead of what actually makes you happy. And newsflash: nobody else cares about you or your relationship as much as you think they do. So, why are you making yourself miserable for people who aren't even watching?

Then again, that's all assuming you're actually as insecure about public opinion as you sound...

Well, if a woman wants to be swept off her feet from the very start because of who she actually is—rather than just to satisfy some small-town expectation🙂

It feels exactly like that... as if my top priority is ensuring everyone thinks highly of me... and not just "highly," but like, "wow."
And I suppose that's why it's so important to have a total knockout by my side.
It’s frustrating because I’m fully aware of this pattern, yet I have no idea how to fix it.
It’s like I’ve lived my whole life with low self-esteem, even though there isn't a clear reason for it—or maybe I'm just not seeing it.

That’s exactly my point—I’m assuming she’s got some deep-seated insecurity because she basically admitted that’s what’s driving the bus.

And hey, she even mentioned her small-town upbringing was part of it.😛

@Scott Lee13

Look, when you really sit back and peel back the layers, that's the core of it. You're hunting for validation from everyone else, but instead of finding it within yourself, you're trying to outsource all that approval through your boyfriend.

EDIT: Oops, my bad, I thought you said "Not quite..."

So, in what way is this actually messing things up for you?

I’m not gonna sit here and edit this like fifty times... seriously. Look, I don't know how old you are, but some things in life—they just stick. They don't change easily, you know? So if this isn't actually wrecking your life, just don't sweat it too much. Besides, finding actual luck in love is pretty damn rare these days—whether you're picky or just plain impossible—and let's face it, we all carry some baggage around with us... we just live with it. Maybe you should just wait for one of those random, lucky moments where you run into a guy who actually gets you and happens to be "the one" too. 🙂

Based on the way you described it, if you had asked me before, I probably would have told you it was just some sort of complex or an ego thing where you're trying to prove your worth, but personally, I don't think this has anything to do with self-confidence at all.🤷

I'm getting closer to 40 than 30😉

Look, these aren't massive crises—but maybe I am passing up decent people just because they aren't "hot" enough.
The other thing is that I end up stuck in these half-hearted situations with guys who don't really value me anyway.
Or perhaps I'm forcing myself to be with a certain type—settling for crumbs just to make it work.
Hmm—it leads me back to the same conclusion: I don't really value myself at all...

Sorry, I'm rambling quite a bit... I hope some of this makes sense. 😉

But what kind of complexes?
And who exactly am I supposed to be proving anything to at my age?

I hear you. My situation is slightly different, but the core issue is basically the same. I totally get why I ended up this way. It’s exactly what a few people pointed out: I view myself through everyone else's eyes. Even though I have zero actual reason to prove anything to anyone, the impulse is just too strong to ignore. Because of that, I always end up targeting a specific type of guy—the kind of guy 95% of women would jump at the chance to date. In my head, it’s like I'm proving that I'm the one who can actually land him...

And honestly, it’s becoming a real problem. I find myself consciously rejecting guys who would probably actually love me. But then there’s this nagging feeling inside that won't let me settle for someone "average," as someone put it. So yeah, I guess I'm just screwed...🙄🙄🙄

but how does one even begin to fight that instinct...
I mean, it's perfectly normal to want to be with someone I find attractive, but I know I'm overcompensating.
Lately, I've been focusing on younger men—as if that serves as some sort of validation for an unknown reason...
It's almost like I want to shout to the world, "Look at what I can pull off!"—even though, frankly, nobody cares.🙄

Childhood traumas? Maybe you're just carrying around some baggage from your younger years without even realizing it.🤷 Were you ever an outcast growing up, or maybe someone people constantly tried to pick on?
The subconscious is a real piece of work.

To me, this whole thing just screams deep-seated insecurities and a struggle with self-worth.

I know exactly what this is about. 🤣 No, I wasn't accepted at all—I was just different. I spent a huge chunk of my life feeling like that, and now that things have finally turned around and my luck has changed, it’s like I’m constantly shoving it in their faces to remind them of how things used to be...

So, look, we’re talking about proving your worth here... but honestly? It’s being done all wrong. If you want my real, unfiltered take, you need to stop making men the sun that your entire universe revolves around. Instead, pivot that energy toward actual substance—stuff like killing it at your job, leaning into a hobby you actually care about, building out your social circle, or just meeting different people... specifically guys, but without that heavy sexual or romantic subtext hanging over everything.
I really think this kind of self-work helps steady the ship and starts fixing that warped view of yourself and how you handle relationships. When you start seeing men as actual human beings—just platonic connections—you won't be constantly tripping over those deep-seated fears or getting stuck in defensive mode. Eventually, it helps you see them as companions or friends rather than just... I don't know, fuel for your own ego. Not necessarily those specific dudes, but just the male gender in general.

Basically, stop obsessing over guys and start focusing on what you’re actually capable of... your own potential. It’s a choice, really. If you have the willpower to make it happen.
