I'm 22 and I've been stuck in this depression hole for four years now—I can tell you firsthand, I know what hell looks like... Honestly, I don't think things could get any worse than what this has done to me. Beyond just being unable to feel joy, I can't even remember what being happy actually feels like. It’s just constant, insane thoughts and these fake beliefs that haunt me for months—stuff a normal person wouldn't even dream of... I'm just done. I've isolated myself from everyone and the worst part is knowing people talk about it when they haven't got a clue how it actually feels... I really need to know how to find the guts to tell my parents I need help. Every single time I scrape together whatever strength I have left, this depression just convinces me I'm talking nonsense—that I don't need help and it's all just in my head... it's a vicious cycle. I tried those over-the-counter supplements once, and after a week, I actually felt slightly better, but then things went south—I was shaking all day, nothing crazy, just a constant tremor like I was in some kind of delirium... so I stopped taking them and everything just spiraled even harder. Please, I need advice because I'm seriously lost... This depression is basically running my life at this point—I can't even make decisions for myself anymore, it's like it's taken total control of everything...

Please, just show them exactly what you wrote here. Tell your parents today. Do it soon!

You clearly have zero clue what actual, heavy depression feels like—I am so done with a whole bunch of replies just like this one...

You don't have to reply here, but seriously, ask yourself why you're in this state. Is it really worth spending four years of your prime life feeling lifeless instead of actually living and enjoying yourself? I don't know your specific situation, but we all hit low points sometimes. I get the intrusive thoughts—everyone goes through phases like that—but four years is a long time. Don't let what other people say be the worst part; the way you feel is what matters. Now, the real question is whether you're actually doing anything to get out of this, or if you've just tried some pills. I'm no psychologist, so I don't know how meds work, but I don't think a pill can fix things if you don't change your mindset toward something positive. No medication can do that. My advice? Read some psychology books, get some grit, stay positive, and start fighting back. I think you can pull yourself out of this on your own.

Stop struggling on your own. Just talk to your parents and go see a doctor. Severe depression is treatable with medication. Things will get better.

Depression hits me in waves every few years, and when it does, it doesn't let go easily. Last year, things got so bad I realized I just couldn't function anymore. I finally went to see a psychiatrist and started meds. Sure, the side effects were wild, but at least I felt better. God help anyone dealing with this—it’s a brutal disease of the soul.
What's the point in me even saying anything? Nothing really helps besides medication and actually talking to a decent professional. My first psychiatrist was a complete moron. Honestly, more harm than good—he spent an entire hour talking about himself. Like, hello? And then I had to pay him for it. What an idiot. This time, I didn't go to a private clinic, and that guy actually saved my life.🙏

Exactly! You aren't a doctor or a psychiatrist, so please don't give medical advice on things you aren't an expert in. Stick to other topics where you can actually offer helpful insights!

Look, I’m no expert, and I don't claim to have all the answers here. But I really hope you find the guts to realize that struggling with mental health isn't something to be ashamed of. You aren't being aggressive, and your condition isn't hurting anyone around you. Maybe your parents have noticed something is off, too, but they're probably just as scared as you are. It would go a long way if you just went to them and said, "Hey, I don't feel right." Your depression might be whispering in your ear that this is all nonsense, but the fact remains: you feel terrible for a reason, and nobody should have to suffer through that. 🙂

Or look at it this way: if you’re already heading to the doctor for something else, just ask them to write you a referral for a psychiatrist while you're there, especially since things have been feeling heavy lately. I mean, if you can't bring yourself to make a specific appointment for that, just bundle it with your regular visit.

I honestly can't even put into words how hard this is to admit—it’s not like I can just walk into a clinic in Chicago and be like, "Hey doc, my ear hurts, my throat's scratchy, give me some Advil and a referral..." I'm terrified of the stigma—you know, people looking at you like you've totally lost your mind... But this depression? It's like some glitchy AI taking over my brain, making it impossible to function when everything feels completely upside down... It’s so easy for everyone else to chime in online—"Hey man, just stay positive!" blah blah blah... while my entire world is literally collapsing... It’s like being on a plane headed straight for a tailspin over the Rockies and having someone yell, "Don't worry, just think happy thoughts, it'll all work out!" 🙏

Look, let’s stop trying to sugarcoat this. Depression isn't something to be ashamed of; it's just another health issue that can hit anyone, much like any other physical illness. Doctors have seen it all before—there shouldn't be any surprises there.

For now, just try to convince yourself to take that first step. Practice saying it out loud, almost like you're asking for a routine referral to an eye doctor or something similar. Just one simple sentence: "I need a referral for a psychiatrist; I haven't been feeling like myself lately."

Look, I’m trying to pull myself together enough to actually say this—but I gotta wait until this depression lifts a bit because in this absolute mess, I wouldn't be able to get a word out to a damn bird on a wire... God, this weight is just too much...

Why even bother telling your parents?
It clearly adds an extra layer of stress—and let's be real, family dynamics are usually way messier than they look on the surface.

Look, you're 22. You're a full-on adult now.

My advice? First, just own the fact that you're going through a rough patch right now. Admit you need some help—it’s not a big deal, and it’s definitely not the end of the world.
Then, just go see a GP. They can talk things through with you to figure out the next steps—maybe they'll prescribe something to take, or maybe they'll refer you to a psychiatrist who can get you on the right treatment plan.

Depression is basically just a serotonin deficiency in the brain, and it's totally manageable with meds. I don't get why you're making it such a struggle.

Thanks for the input, but seriously, read my earlier posts if you actually want to understand why I'm still struggling this much...😉

I don't get it—I’ve read everything here and it's pretty obvious—if you've been feeling this crappy for years, you need to go get some help.

Everything you just laid out—the fear, the isolation, the denial, all that negativity... it's just depression talking. That's why you're struggling.

We gotta figure out what's actually causing this—then we can start fixing the problem.

If you just let things spiral and hope they fix themselves... man, it’s only gonna get worse.

But tell me, what is your relationship actually like with your parents? Is it honest and warm, or are things more distant and cold?

Are you used to having open conversations with either of them—your mom or your dad—and do you honestly think they would step up and get involved to help you out with this?

At the end of the day, you're an adult, which means you have the autonomy to handle whatever you need to regarding your treatment or seeing a doctor, but isn't it just so much easier when you can be completely transparent with the people you live with? And, more importantly, when you know you actually have their support behind you?

Man, whenever I finally work up the nerve to actually say something, my brain just totally short-circuits—I feel like I’m just babbling nonsense, like it's all my own damn fault... I CAN'T EVEN EXPLAIN IT... and I'm not even expecting you to get it...

I'd just call it traditional, I guess—nobody talks about this kind of stuff, just work, school, the usual grind... they can tell something's off with me, but they probably just tell themselves I'm fine to make it easier... honestly, I'm just sick of all this...
And about that support thing—like I said, having them in my corner would be way better than heading to some doctor where everyone says they treat you like garbage...
