2019 Golden Globes Discussion

The directors were a complete disaster. It looks like everything is finally lining up for Glenn Close to snag her long-overdue Oscar.

I haven't watched many movies or series this year. Of the ones I have seen, Rami Malek definitely earned his win, even if the movie itself wasn't anything special—I suppose that's just how this awards season is shaping up.

I'm happy for the Americans and for Patricia Clarkson from Sharp Objects.

Personally, I thought that Jim Carrey bit was pretty funny.

The hosts were straight-up garbage—the only part worth watching was Carrey. Honestly, he might even make a decent Oscar host. Sure, he’d have to watch his mouth, but at least he could pull off those dumb jokes in his own style and actually be entertaining...

Every single joke they made was trash—honestly, they should've just stopped halfway through the ceremony and come back only to wrap things up. I can't tell what was worse... those awkward compliments to the nominees or that weirdly divisive stuff they kept pushing.

I felt the same way about that part. He has a spontaneity that was completely missing from this year's hosts. Everything else just felt so forced. It would probably be a lot better if Kevin Hart hosted the Oscars next year.

Exactly. That’s why I think Carrey would be a killer choice—the guy isn't afraid to look like an idiot, which is huge now that they've banned all those "offensive" jokes.

Then again, didn't Kevin Hart back out because everyone went after him for those homophobic comments?

I completely missed that whole scandal. I just went to read up on it, and it looks like they haven't found a replacement yet, so there's a real chance Kevin might end up staying after all. Who knows what will happen. 🤣

Honestly, they should just pick their favorite Oprah and call it a day. Everyone loves her anyway. Doesn't matter if the ratings are tanking—at least nobody's gonna get their feelings hurt.

The hosts were honestly pretty bad, unfortunately. I watch Brandon Evans5 in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and I know her from A Star Is Born, of course, but I never expected it to be such an awkward disaster. They had a tough job on their hands since nobody else wants to host the awards...

I am beyond thrilled that Bale got the win. His speech was fantastic. He’s just such a genuinely great guy. Even thanking the devil 😁

It’s hilarious watching the backlash from all the Lady Gaga and A Star Is Born fans. Now, suddenly, everyone is tearing into Bohemian Rhapsody.

I’m so happy Rami took home the win. He stepped into such a demanding role and his performance was just incredible.
I honestly didn't see a win coming for Bohemian Rhapsody. Don't get me wrong, I think the movie is great and I'm thrilled they won, but I really thought A Star Is Born would sweep because the media has been pushing it as the heavy favorite for basically every award this season.
So, seeing both Rami and the film pick up Golden Globes this morning was a total shocker... 👍😁

I haven't really been keeping up with the news, but I just saw that BlacKkKlansman landed a nomination in the drama category. That movie is such a damn dramedy, though—it’s hard to know where you're even supposed to slot it 🙂

Hollywood is basically circling the drain lately. We're entering some dark ages. Everything is becoming so overtly political, and frankly, nobody gives a damn what some A-lister thinks about the state of the country—those wealthy elites couldn't relate to a regular person if they tried. The content is getting stale, and comedy has hit rock bottom. Aside from a few veteran faces who still have talent, this new generation is just terrible. I catch those late-night shows sometimes, and Conan is pretty much the only one left with any sense of humor. Colbert, Kimmel, Fallon, Meyers, and Corden? It’s a race to the bottom of boredom, though I'd say Fallon takes the prize. 😬

Movies are getting worse by the day, with the occasional exception here and there. Award shows have turned into a complete joke. Even back in the day, "Oscar movies" were a thing, but at least they possessed actual quality. Now, it's all a farce. Take *The Shape of Water*—I don't know how they could have made that even more political. That movie would've walked away with a trophy if it had been up against *The Godfather* or *Scarface* last year. 🤣

The math behind the rewards is pretty simple: more eyeballs means a massive platform for pushing specific brands or big ideas. And honestly, the sheer glitz of those Hollywood award shows provides the perfect backdrop for it all. Sure, movies are the main attraction, but they bundle in high-end fashion designers on the red carpet and way too much political messaging or social agendas. It’s all part of the package, and eventually, that influence bleeds right into how the Best Picture categories are picked.

It’s the same old story every single year. The movies seem to be getting worse, and you always hear people complaining that some random film won the big prize for purely non-artistic reasons... I mean, it’s not really surprising though, since at the end of the day, it’s just a themed spectacle.

There are always great films out there—there always will be—it's just that those true masterpieces usually get bypassed by the awards and these big flashy events.
