Or my teeth...

Then you deal with braces and then start all over again. I guess that's not really a solution. 😁

I've been biting them for as long as I can remember, and frankly, I highly doubt any high schooler out there is significantly more high-strung than I am.

If you trim them regularly, you won't have anything to worry about... plus, I guess you should consider how much bacteria builds up under there...

And what exactly am I supposed to trim, man? If I actually had anything to cut. There’s nothing there. I’ve imagined stuff way worse than this, and still, absolutely nothing. You just don't get it.

I honestly don't know, I used to bite them all the time too... it happened way too fast... it’s just a gross habit... you eventually just stop... once you realize you're doing it subconsciously, you just tell yourself "stop"... it takes character, I guess.

Biting your nails is usually just a red flag for something else going on under the surface... I can't put my finger on exactly what, but it could be anything. In my experience, it usually points toward a lack of confidence, at least in most people I know...

I honestly don't even think about my nails unless I'm sitting there trying to study... then suddenly they become this huge distraction. Once I start hitting the books, I'll spend half an hour just fidgeting with them, messing with my technique, or picking at them... I guess it’s just my own little way of procrastinating instead of actually getting work done...

The nails, the skin around them... honestly, I know it’s gross, but I can't seem to stop myself.

Does anyone actually have a way to quit this? 😕

Yeah—just stop.

It’s all mental, really—it’s just a cycle trapped inside my own head, and honestly, I’ve been picking at them for as long as I can remember... I’ve tried to stop a hundred times, and just once, I actually succeeded; they grew out quite long with that smooth skin texture, too. 😍 For about a month there, I didn't touch them at all, and I was feeling so incredibly proud of myself, showing them off to everyone, receiving nothing but compliments, and then, almost overnight, I suddenly started seeing them as unsightly again. So, here I am, back to biting, back to the struggle, desperately trying to quit because the sight of it is just plain revolting... and if I'm being honest, it hurts sometimes, too. But as I always say, it’s all psychological; you just have to find a way to remind yourself to stop every single time the urge starts to take hold...

Rather than letting him bite his nails, I suggested he just chew some gum instead. That was actually how I helped my son break the habit. I realized pretty quickly that it was nothing more than pure emotional tension, and no amount of lecturing or scolding was going to help him stop—in fact, it usually did the exact opposite.

But then it hit me—if I caught him biting his nails, I would simply tell him that if he really needed something to chew on, he should go grab a piece of gum. And now, here I am, having to trim his nails all over again... 🙄 🤣 🤣 and for nearly a year and a half, he’s been "trimming" them all by himself... 😬

I’m dealing with something pretty similar, though I don’t bite them—I just end up slicing away at them with a snack cutter. A few times a day, no less. I couldn't tell you why, it's just this compulsion, this thing I simply have to do. Sometimes I honestly wish I had four arms and four legs just so I could keep cutting.

I think the gum idea is solid advice.
I used to constantly remind my son to stop biting his nails, nothing too aggressive, but I definitely became that nagging parent who wouldn't let it go. Lately, over the last couple of months, I haven't really noticed him doing it, so I'm feeling pretty relieved.

I was also a nail biter... And I mean, seriously, it was totally unconscious... For me, it was mostly tied to stress during high school.... During summer break, I actually managed to stop for short stretches... Eventually, I just decided to quit because I wanted my hands to look decent. That clear polish with the gross taste didn't help me at all, btw... I would’ve just made disgusting faces and kept biting anyway... I started painting my nails darker colors instead, and somehow that helped me stop... Sometimes I catch myself still running my nails against my teeth, but my self-control is much stronger now... I've been growing mine out for several months now, and I've become one of those people who loses their mind whenever a nail chips. 🎉

Yes, I was exactly the same way, though nothing really worked... until we discovered gum. Now, it’s actually been a wonderful solution, because even though I worried he might end up chewing gum all day long, that hasn't happened at all. 👍 Honestly, I am just so relieved he managed to kick the habit; isn't it much easier to steer them in the right direction while they're young rather than trying to fix it later in life? Though, of course, it is possible to change habits later too, just look at Scott Gonzalez27... 👍

So I’m sitting here reading this and literally biting my nails down. Honestly, if I want to listen to an MP3, I guess I just have to deal with it.

I started biting my nails somewhere between middle school and high school. My mom was always on my case about it, but I just didn't care back then. I wasn't even using any gross coatings or anything... my nails didn't actually look that bad. Then one day, I saw a friend of mine biting theirs, and seeing how nasty it looked—and seeing their actual nails—just made me decide to stop. And I did, just like that. Honestly, though, I think it’s mostly a nervous habit. I don't bite them anymore (I couldn't even if I tried, they're too tough now), but I find myself constantly cleaning them. I'd love to get rid of that habit too, but I guess this is a decent compromise...

My old man told me he’d give me $167 if I could just stop biting my nails for two months straight. Well, it’s been three months now and I haven't touched them once—but hey, no cash in hand yet, hahaha! Honestly though, I don't even feel the urge anymore...

I’ve been a nail biter for as long as I can remember—and trust me, they used to look terrible. I tried everything from bitter polishes to all sorts of behavioral tricks, but nothing actually stuck. It wasn't until my mom finally forced me to get professional acrylics that things changed. Sure, it’s a bit more expensive upfront, but they looked incredible and lasted me about three months. Once I couldn't physically bite them anymore, the urge just... vanished. Now, my nails actually look great.

Ugh, I wish! But my mom won't let me! 🙂
How much does that upgrade actually run you?
If I can somehow talk her into it, I might just give that miracle product a shot 🙂
