For some people, it’s like a cigarette—just a way to blow off steam and kill the tension.😬

Just kidding—I don't bite every single time. Occasionally. And once I get them cleaned up, the urge is gone; but if they get damaged during the process? Well, then all bets are off.

I'm wondering if constant nail biting should actually be classified as some kind of disorder?

To give you some context, my brother has been compulsively biting his nails for several years now.
I notice he does it both consciously and completely unconsciously! He has bitten them down so much that there’s barely half of the nail left; his fingertips are incredibly painful, yet he just can't seem to stop. When I ask him if it's just due to nerves, he insists that it isn't.
Does anyone know how to break this habit—or disorder, or whatever it may be?🤷

🤷 I couldn't say for certain, as I suffer from the exact same issue myself. I have been biting my nails for as long as I can remember, and it isn't even triggered by nervousness; it is just a mindless, frustrating habit. That said, I have a three-year-old son, and I've noticed he has already started as well. I am not overly concerned because I manage to keep it under control, whereas my uncle and my mother bite themselves down to the blood, much like your brother. I suspect there might be a genetic component involved, though I am certainly no expert. Perhaps someone could suggest an alternative; personally, I find that pumpkin seeds help me.👍

I honestly can't wrap my head around how anyone pulls that off. I mean, your fingers would be absolutely killing you! I'm not even sure if it's some kind of genetic thing. Did you ever go through a stretch where you actually managed to stop biting your nails for a while?

Sometimes, purely out of sheer boredom...🙂
It’s a rare thing, really. I usually find myself doing it without even realizing it's happening...
The worst part is that inevitable moment later on, when I catch a glimpse of my bitten nails...🙂
Still, they say your hands—nails included—are a window into your soul. And honestly? Ragged, chewed-up nails don't exactly paint a picture of someone who has their life together...🙂

No, and frankly, it’s driving me up the wall. Not to mention my wife—she’s practically losing her mind over it. In fact, I’m biting my own nails as I type this. It's becoming quite impossible to control.

I used to be a chronic nail biter myself! Honestly, after I went a bit too far a few times and really damaged them, I finally decided to quit. Now, I only tend to pick at my cuticles when I'm feeling particularly on edge. 🤣
I can't quite tell—his nails are almost non-existent at this point.

🙂 It's like a toddler habit; most people outgrow that by high school. How old is he actually?😕

I’ve been biting my nails for sixteen years straight now, and honestly? It’s a disaster. If you saw what my fingertips actually look like, you’d gag—they’re completely mangled and totally deformed...

It’s so hard to quit
I still haven't figured out a way to make it stick...
I actually managed to stay away for a few months once,
but then I ended up falling right back into it.

Honestly, everyone—I’m almost at a loss for words here.
Is there actually a cure for this? I keep seeing these TV commercials for various nail polishes and gels designed to be applied over your nails that have a revolting taste—supposedly meant to stop you from biting them. Has anyone actually tried any of these?

Honestly, I can't say how he manages, but for me, the worst part is during job interviews. I try to hide them even though they aren't actually that bad; I just end up biting my lip to keep them in check.🤷

I was a nail biter for maybe three or four years—back when I was still in middle school. I decided to just stop, and I actually did, even though I’m not usually the type to make big, firm decisions. Honestly, I regret ever starting in the first place. My fingers don't look terrible now, but they definitely could have looked a lot better...

I used to be a chronic nail biter myself. Once I realized it had become this mindless, constant compulsion, I made a conscious effort to quit. For the first few days, things actually went smoothly—not a single nail was harmed. But then, strangely enough, I found myself actually missing the habit. To solve that, I turned to chewing gum. It worked wonders for me; since I always had something to chew on, I simply didn't have the opportunity to bite my nails anymore.

I was a chronic nail biter until I hit 28, and honestly, I did it so bad that people would actually stop me in the street just to comment on how gnarly they looked. I quit about three years ago. Just... stopped.
One day, I just decided I was done. I went out and bought some of that super stinky nail polish and applied it every single day for about a week. Since then? Not even one bite.
It’s really not that deep, I guess. For me, it was purely just a matter of making a choice.
I don't really have any fancy remedies or secret hacks to offer, and I'm not sure if this actually helps you specifically, but hey, it worked for me. I'm living proof. Good luck to you and everyone else out there trying to kick the habit..

Amy Brooks8 said:Why do I even bother biting them?

The nails, the skin around them... honestly, I know it’s gross, but I can't seem to stop myself.

Does anyone actually have a way to quit this? 😕

My advice? Put reminders everywhere you hang out. Leave little notes in your workspace or wherever you spend most of your time. Also, tell your inner circle—friends, family, whoever—that if they catch you mid-bite, they need to call you out on it. It takes some serious patience, but it actually works.

Take me, for example. Back when I was in a long-term relationship with my ex, she used to bite her nails constantly. Every single time I caught her doing it, I’d give her fingers a firm tap to snap her out of it. After about a year of that, she finally quit. And man, she’d been doing it since she was a kid.

My ex worked at that firm for four years... we actually split up two years ago, yet here I am, still chewing my nails like a nervous teenager before a big presentation. Seriously, Doc, what exactly is going on with me? Is there some kind of glitch in the system?😲

I’ve been a nail biter for as long as I can remember. It wasn't until my freshman year of high school that I finally managed to kick the habit entirely. 😁
The one thing I just can't seem to shake, though, is picking at the skin around my cuticles. It looks pretty rough and can get incredibly painful, too... 😢 Honestly, I have no clue why I still do it. 😕

When did you start biting your nails? Honestly, what kind of insecurity started creeping in there? You should really look into finding a solid hypnotherapist—it might actually help. Just a thought. Best of luck.
