Can you use a temporary one for a bit, or is the checking account totally off-limits?π€

It won't work at an ATM or for anything onlineβitβs basically just a piece of cardboard with an account number on it. You can still use it for direct deposits or wire transfers, though.

How many days does it typically take to get a real debit card issued?

Iβd say it usually takes about two weeks across most major banks. Itβs more or less within that window.

Do I need to be 18? If so, can I have a legal guardian manage things until I hit adulthood, and then just get my own debit card once I'm of age?
Thanks
if you're a minor, you'll need a legal guardian to manage the account for youβbasically, you won't be able to walk in and pull cash or use your own card yet. if your mom or dad is acting as your guardian, they'll need to bring their birth certificate and a photo ID. plus, if they don't already have an account there, they'll need their Social Security number and some other basic ID info.

Hey guys, I was hoping someone could help me out with a few things... I'm looking to open an account over at Bank of America, but I'm stuck on whether a checking or savings account makes more sense. I just need a spot where people can toss some cash my way every now and then... you know, like when my relatives send me money from New York... so I'm wondering if they want to deposit $1667, how much is the bank gonna hit me with in fees... plus what are the monthly maintenance costs like... I'm still a minor, but that shouldn't be an issue since my parents will set everything up for me... I just need to know which option lets me hit the ATM whenever I need to grab some cash... so yeah, any advice would be appreciated

A checking account should cover what you need, and you can check all the specific fees on the Bank of America website.

So I'm looking at opening a checking account, but I'm wondering what the monthly maintenance fees look like... how much is Bank of America gonna shave off every time someone actually sends me some cash
#51 ·
Every single bank has its own specific set of service fees
If you're pulling cash directly from a teller or one of their own ATMs, you won't see any extra chargesβbut if you try to use an out-of-network ATM from a different bank, they'll hit you with a fee
Honestly, your best bet is just to sit down and look over the fee schedule at the branch to see exactly what the damage will be

Nah... what I'm actually wondering is... if I open up a checking account...... and someone transfers $1667 to me...... is the bank gonna take a cut of those funds.... and what's the annual fee for an account like that
#53 ·
Please stop using bold; thereβs absolutely no need for it.
They aren't going to take anything from those $1667, just the account maintenance fees that vary from one bank to another, as people have already pointed out to you.

so... you're basically telling me I should just go ahead and open a checking account then... thanks...

Look, speaking purely from my own experience here, I know for a fact that having a basic checking account at the Federal Reserve doesn't cost you a dime, though if I remember correctly, there might be a fee for a standard current account $3.00 based on the specific month you actually use itβyou know, like, if thereβs actual activity or transactions happening in the account.
Otherwise, it honestly ends up costing absolutely nothing.

So, basically, as a minor with this card I'll be getting... I can hit up ATMs, pay for stuff at stores and all that... but will my folks get statements sent to the house... showing how much went in and how much was spent and things like that...

Look, if you're still a minor, you aren't going to get anywhere with that card because you actually have to be an adult just to qualify for one in the first place.
Personally, all I was looking for was a basic checking account without a debit card attached, and man, that was a breeze to set up. But if youβre gunning for an actual card? Youβve gotta prove youβve got steady income, which means handing over your most recent pay stubs or whatever other mountain of paperwork the banks throw at you to satisfy their endless bureaucracy.
I also remember someone telling me that your parents would have to go out and physically get the card for you. Using an ATM isn't even a huge deal since you just need your PIN, but when you're trying to buy stuff in a store, they usually want a signature too, so that might
end up being a bit of a headache. Unless, of course, you get lucky and the cashier only asks for your PIN.

But look, I just really want to know if Iβm actually getting the card itself... you know, so I can actually go out and withdraw cash... because my folks are setting this up for me and they told me I'd be able to pull money whenever I feel like it... so I guess I'm just wondering if the card and the PIN are coming, and then I'll be good to go at any ATM, right...

Go ahead and read this entire thread from the top; you'll find the answers there. For anything specific, you'll still need to check with Bank of America

I'm just wondering if I'll actually get the card and the PIN... doesn't really matter whose name is on it since it's me using it, I just need to know if it's coming my way
