If those pills actually managed to sharpen my focus, I might finally be able to retain anything...
How long does it actually take for that pill to kick in once you’ve taken it...?

That said, I definitely don't have a photographic memory. 😢
..as for those guarana pills, I’m a bit skeptical. What kind of actual difference did you notice, aside from the fact that studying feels less like a chore once you've taken them?

guarana is basically a plant used for physical and mental stimulation. Think of it as a natural stimulant—it has caffeine. Nothing crazy. It just wakes me up a bit and helps me focus on what I'm doing. I started taking them because my schedule is a mess; I barely sleep and work constantly. Occasionally, I'll grab one when I feel like I'm about to crash.

As for mind mapping, if you aren't a textbook learner, give it a shot. My notes are mostly diagrams, arrows, and lines... very little text, just symbols and associations.

Steven Hall2 said:Back in high school, studying was practically a foreign concept to me; I’d just sit there in class, listen, and gauge how much actually stuck... occasionally turning in an assignment here and there, which was enough to scrape by with a B. 🙂 There were always those students who claimed they spent entire days buried in textbooks, yet somehow ended up with mediocre grades or failing marks at the end of the semester, so I always felt pretty secure in my own skin, knowing I wasn't falling behind...
Now that I've hit college, my complete lack of study habits has turned everything into an absolute disaster. 😠
I somehow managed to limp my way toward graduation, but now these exams are closing in on me, feeling like a physical weight about to crush me... I haven't accomplished a single thing since June 😠 and the guilt is overwhelming, yet when the moment comes to actually open a book, it’s impossible; my attention span lasts maybe fifteen minutes, if I'm lucky. Everything I read just turns into a blur of blah, blah, blah, 🙂 nothing but dry, tedious lists, even though the subject matter itself isn't actually uninteresting to me...

You've just fallen out of rhythm. Studying is like running. If you start running again after a long break, you aren't going to hit your old pace immediately. You have to build back up slowly...

Same here. I haven't passed anything since July and couldn't force myself to start. Even if I did, it would take me an hour to learn what used to take ten minutes. I'm just taking it slow until I get back into shape...

So it's essentially just like coffee then...🙂
how far in advance do you need to take it, and how long does it actually take to kick in?

No clue, maybe half an hour... I usually just grab some when I’m losing my mind because the workload is getting ridiculous. You can find it on Amazon or something, I think it's about $5...

I know, I spotted them over at CVS, though I haven't quite decided if they're worth picking up yet...

Yeah, honestly, that guarana stuff isn't all that impressive to me.
I took two pills and slept through half a movie.😍 😠
I guess I just have too much caffeine in my system.

So, what’s the verdict on the guarana at the end? Is it actually worth a shot or should I pass? And for those of you who struggle with speed reading just as much as I do—would you even bother trying it?
Personally, if I just grab a cup of coffee and try to study, I’m out like a light before I even finish the first chapter...

What’s the vibe when you finally crash in bed feeling totally accomplished because you spent two hours straight grinding through studying, only to take a test and absolutely bomb it because your brain just hit a wall and you couldn't even remember the most basic stuff...

Lucky you. At least you actually had enough focus to study in the first place—you can't lose what you never had. I never felt that drive to hit the books because, frankly, I never saw the point in grinding through school just to build some hypothetical future. I scraped by with barely passing grades and ended up enrolling in a culinary program in Chicago where I basically coasted through every single year, nearly failing more than once... but honestly? It all worked out perfectly. Now I’m pulling in plenty of money at $2.75, so why would I complain? I'm perfectly content. Forget studying 👍

Bradley Watson3, the reality is that you aren't even looking to change things, and you seem perfectly content just staying exactly where you are... whereas I simply won't find any sense of peace until I've conquered this thing I feel compelled to master, regardless of what the paycheck looks like.

I’ve been taking ginko, and honestly, it’s been a lifesaver for my focus and even helping with the depressive moods.
For me, it just feels like I actually have control over myself again. I can actually sit there and study all day long,
instead of my mind constantly drifting off... I can finally reel my thoughts back in and stay locked into whatever I'm working on.

I’ve found the perfect way to handle this: I treat myself to a little reward for all the hard work I put in! Believe me, it actually works. 😉 For instance, after finishing an exam every single day, I celebrate by heading out to Boston—but I only allow myself that luxury if I actually pass the test. 👍

are you being for real right now?

where can I grab some of that ginko?
how much does it run me?
any side effects I should worry about?
has anyone here actually had a bad experience with it?

It gets to the point where I’ll sit down to work, hours will just slip right past me, and then I realize I’ve barely absorbed or even reviewed a single thing, which is pretty frustrating. Does anyone happen to know if there are specific exercises or maybe some other kind of techniques that could help fix this? Thanks so much in advance for any advice you can share!

Welcome to the club...it's always been like this for me too...yeah, life's a trip.😛

Fak, I've been really struggling with this lately over the last few months... just can't find the motivation to study when there's so much to do, it's a total curse, honestly. But, mark my words, tomorrow I am finally getting started!! 🙂

I guess I finally see I'm not alone.
Back in elementary school, things were pretty straightforward. High school was kind of the same—I just did what I had to do, though I could usually wing it since improvisation comes naturally to me. I’d take whatever little bits I remembered from class and just fill in the gaps with logic and general knowledge. It worked out fine; I passed my grades with straight A's without ever really sitting down to study much.
But when I actually did put in the work, I remember feeling so good about it. Like, genuinely happy and fulfilled once I finished.

Now I'm in my second year of college. Last year I finished with a B average because I didn't push myself, but this year... this year everything is different. I have exams coming up that I actually have to study for if I want to pass on the first try. And it's the stuff I hate most—morphology (grammar; I'm majoring in German).
I don't know how to move forward. I can't concentrate, and I just have zero motivation. I can spend hours glued to my computer, unless I head out for coffee or something. Then I come home and the very first thing I do is turn the PC back on and just scroll through MSN or forums for hours.

I honestly don't know how to dig myself out of this rut. How am I supposed to learn these two hardest subjects? Especially when I'm trying to learn things I don't even understand. I never really grasped basic grammar definitions back in the day... so trying to tackle German grammar now feels impossible.
I love the literature, though. But the grammar and phonetics... they drive me crazy. 😲

How do you find the will to do something you hate? Something you feel like you won't master anyway? Something you know you'll probably just have to cram, only to end up having to teach it to kids one day? 😕

On top of that, because of my GPA last year, I don't have to pay tuition, so my parents are still pushing me. This year is just tough, and I'm doing nothing.
I have reasons to be motivated—not paying for school, not wanting to let down my parents who work so hard... but still. I'm just stuck.
What should I do?

Here’s my situation... I didn't have any issues focusing back in high school—my mind would wander occasionally, sure, but nothing like this. Now? I'm a freshman and I STILL can't force myself to actually study because there's always something "more important" to do. I have four midterms coming up in two weeks, and I haven't even cracked a book yet. 😕

Did someone mention ginko? Does anyone know what they go for these days?

I tried taking George Washington and some Omega-3s, but it didn't really do much for me 🙄 For George Washington, it probably depends on the brand, maybe anywhere from $50 to $100 🙂
My situation is a bit worse. It's not that I can't force myself to study, it's just that nothing actually sticks. My brain just freezes up sometimes and I can't remember the simplest things, like basic household items. I often read things wrong because the letters just seem to scramble in my head. It's hard to focus on anything anyone tells me... I guess. I don't know when this will finally pass.
