Nomophobia: Anyone else terrified of being without their phone?

Is anyone else genuinely terrified of making phone calls, or am I just the odd one out here?😬
What’s the official clinical term for this?

I call it - PHONEPHOBIA 😁 😁.. I don't know if there's an official medical term for it, but I deal with the exact same thing when it comes to talking on the phone.. It’s not like I start breaking out in a cold sweat just seeing a call pop up or hearing the ringtone, but actually having to carry on a conversation over the line? Man, that just feels totally draining and uncomfortable.. Though, I guess there are a few silver linings to being this way.. Like, my monthly data plan from $33 lasts me forever because I barely use it, sometimes stretching out to two whole months 😁

Look, it’s not that I’m actually scared, it’s just that the whole thing feels like an exhausting chore. Back when I was some 😬 hormone-driven teenager, I could spend hours obsessing over every little detail, but nowadays? It’s just a massive drain on my energy.

Or are you talking about those moments where you have to call up some random stranger or deal with a massive bureaucracy like the IRS... something like that where you just freeze up? I’m not quite following your logic here...

Alright, let’s dig into this a bit deeper. I’ve gotta be honest, I don't quite get how someone can feel nauseous just looking at a phone screen without being terrified of actual, real-life interaction.

Logic dictates it should work the other way around—if you have to make a comparison, anyway. In the real world, you're standing there face-to-face with someone, whereas on a call, you're basically invisible.

So what's the alternative then? Are we all supposed to communicate like we're sending telegrams? Just short, clipped bursts and then move on? I've never heard of anyone struggling with this before...

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. Every person is wired differently.

The whole thing is that I constantly hang up on people, even when I could just call them back a minute later and settle the matter once and for all.
I find it much easier to communicate face-to-face... especially with strangers... but honestly, I struggle even with calling people I actually know.🙄
It’s hard to put into words... I tend to gesture quite a bit when I’m talking, and I find it incredibly difficult to convey what I’m actually thinking over the phone.😢

Since we’re already on the topic of phobias and ordering pizza, does anyone else deal with a weird anxiety about delivery drivers? 😳 😁

For me, the worst part is that they can't just slide the box under my door; I actually have to interact with them. 😱 🤣

Honestly, this little phobia is such a drain. 😠 I mean, I’ll still order the food because hunger usually wins out over anxiety, but it’s still a hassle. 😢

p.s. Dealing with the mail carrier is fine by me. 😕 😁 😁

I find myself just wandering around looking at everything instead of actually picking up the phone to call someone...
but honestly, when it comes to texting or being online, I’m totally fine with that kind of communication, you know? It works for me!

But over the phone? No way, absolutely not.

I think I’ve finally figured out why it's like this for me—it's because I constantly struggle to put exactly what's in my head into actual spoken words, which is so frustrating! So, like, if I say something like

"I really want a pizza right now," and then I realize the person on the other end sounds confused or didn't quite catch my drift, I can easily just add more detail to clear things up...
but on the phone, I just end up getting completely flustered and muddled every single time. 😢

That’s probably why my prepaid plan from Verizon$33 lasts me like three whole months, because I always wait until the very last$1.75 "Your account balance expires in 3 days. Please top up using a voucher."😉 notification pops up before I deal with it!

So, I just got hit with a mobile bill for private calls totaling exactly $0.70—and that’s with tax included, plus my company covers the monthly plan—which is absurd because I don't even have a landline at home. It’s practically a personal record for me, and honestly, I’m not even a heavy user normally. Just... look at 🙂

Though, I wouldn't call it fear. That's not quite the right word. It's more that I find it much easier to actually connect with people when I can see them face-to-face. Using a phone feels like such a chore; it’s really just a tool for making basic arrangements—you know, "let's meet here at this time"—and then we can talk if it's absolutely necessary. I've never been one for endless chatter, and I certainly don't enjoy talking on the phone.

Personally, I wouldn't call it fear, if that's what you mean. It's just easier for me to connect with people when I can actually look them in the eye. Using a phone feels like a bit of a chore to me; it's mostly just for making basic arrangements—like, "I'll see you there at this time," and then we can talk in person if it's really necessary. I've never been much of a talker, and I certainly am not a fan of talking on the phone.

I suppose I can see that. I guess the peak of communication is just eye contact.😁

I was genuinely terrified of the guy who came to install my Xfinity internet😬 and he actually had the audacity to try and start a conversation.👎 Just do your job and leave me alone.🙂

It's just about how much easier it is to communicate if he calls me... because if I have to be the one to call him... 🙂 absolutely not.

I went through a phase where I felt pretty awkward about that too. But I eventually got used to it, especially since we tend to order from the same local pizzeria all the time—we basically know the guy by now, he knows us, it's all very routine. 👍

Anyway, imagine if I had a phobia of phones? Back when I was working in my field, I was practically glued to it. 😬 Man, you wouldn't believe some of the stuff I overheard. 😲
