I don't want to start a whole new thread, but I could really use some advice... I got pulled over by the police earlier and they're asking for my driver's license and registration, but I don't have the registration on me. The officer was circling the car while his partner was busy pulling over other drivers. He noticed I didn't have the inspection sticker displayed, so I tried to explain that I'm not actually the owner—that he just took it in for service two days ago and there was some mess with the insurance due to a lease agreement, so all the paperwork is sitting with him. I even called the owner, and the cop told me he’d drive the documents down to us since he was only 6.2 miles away, but when I mentioned that to the officer, he just brushed me off, saying he doesn't care about my excuses and started listing out all the violations he saw. $100 the missing sticker, $167 the lack of registration, and $100 because the passenger in the back seat wasn't wearing a seatbelt... he just tallied it all up and told me the total is $367, then took my license and went back to his cruiser. A moment later, he came back with my license and said I actually have several more violations coming my way and that I'll receive the official notice in the mail in a few days. Isn't there supposed to be some kind of receipt or written confirmation provided at the scene to prove I was actually stopped? And isn't there supposed to be some limit on how many cars they can pull over at once?

So, when exactly did you commit the violation, and has the police already filed the paperwork with the court to kick off the legal process?

Vojky (or whoever else deleted that post), I honestly don't think my response was even off-topic, especially if you actually bother to read between the lines...

Nobody actually deleted your post from this thread 🙂
—at least, I don't see any sign that it was

Yeah, it was definitely deleted. And honestly? He hit the nail right on the head.

Yesterday afternoon near Austin, specifically on that stretch of road heading toward the outskirts, I got pulled over around 4:40 PM for speeding through a residential area. I was clocked at 73 mph (which is 10 over)39 miles /h when the limit is 31 miles/h. They used one of those handheld radar guns.

The road was practically empty, and since I was approaching the edge of town on a downhill slope, there wasn't any visible speed limit signage... I guess I just didn't realize I had entered the residential zone yet.

So, here's the damage: $167 a fine of $110 and 1 point on my license.

I'm currently a college student, so this fine is a massive hit to my budget. To make matters worse, the officer was totally unsympathetic—no interest in being flexible or even letting me plead down to a lesser, different violation.
I didn't sign anything at the scene.

Does anyone have advice? Should I try to contest the ticket, or should I just plead guilty and hope they'll show some mercy because I'm a broke student?

What kind of arguments actually work when you're fighting a speeding ticket?

Feel free to DM me too!

Thanks!

By the time you actually make it to court... you'll be standing there crying about how you're broke, just a starving college student... they'll probably just toss the whole thing and let you walk without paying a dime...

Could we get some specifics?
By the time this actually hits a courtroom, I’ll probably be an alum already.

Or you could just pay the fine and walk away with a little extra wisdom under your belt!

Alright, then I totally get why 👍
was nuked.
Look, the whole point of this thread was about the ocean—I’m seriously at my wit's end here. I don't know whether I should just shut these down, dig up some old threads, or basically yell at people to actually read the pinned RULES at the top—you know, the ones that clearly state the deadlines? But apparently, nobody bothers to check how to avoid getting their posts flagged or whatever 🙄
.
If this thread doesn't get a decent response soon, I'm just going to merge everything back together and let them hunt through the existing archives themselves 😉

Personally, I find it pretty telling that people are even asking these things, since the questions and answers really highlight how someone could be behind the wheel with 108 citations on their record...
I'd suggest making this a pinned thread instead of merging it, because while it might belong in a group discussion, there's a deeper social issue lurking under the surface of these questions

What, should I start a spreadsheet just to track how many times people have asked this?

This question has been answered in several different threads already, and I’m going to consolidate them because this isn't sparking any actual debate—it’s just creating confusion. People are obsessing over things like, "Wait, if I was born on XX/XX/XXXX, when does my statute of limitations actually run?" Does it start on that specific day? Is it when the court ruling is handed down? And when is it officially "handed down"—is it when you receive the paperwork or when the judge signs it? Then you'll get some random guy jumping in saying, "It's not two years, it's one," without explaining a single thing. 🙄 Then someone else will chime in because they heard it was three years just last week—and then you end up with that ridiculous back-and-forth between Edgar and Pollux where they're basically arguing whether apples are oranges or not.
Honestly, it's pathetic. 😁

Look, I don't care if people think this setup is a bit much—but if you start a new thread without checking if there’s already an answer here, I’m locking it immediately.

I’ll be dropping some useful tips in here so it's crystal clear
- how to draft a formal grievance
- when the statute of limitations kicks in
- who needs to receive an appeal and when

and plenty of other stuff.

I was actually going to suggest 😁

Why not add all of this to the original post? It would be much easier to follow, wouldn't it? That way, everything remains crystal clear for everyone. 😍

copperangler15 said:Look, I get that the lights are synchronized. But is a judge really going to waste time and money on expert testimony for this? And once they bring in some incompetent witness to testify, the court is just going to believe them. From what I've seen, the police act like they're above the law anyway. Third point: does it actually matter if they botched the location or messed up the street name on the ticket? Do I even have a fighting chance at getting this charge dropped?

Not a chance.

It’s actually impossible to provide an expert opinion on which specific light was green at a given moment unless there was some kind of accident to begin with—so where would they even get that data from?...

It’s the same old story we see all the time... one person sticks to their guns and suddenly everyone acts like they're the ultimate authority...

I’ve gone through almost everything posted here, but I still haven't found an answer to my specific question.
Over two years ago, I was caught speeding and slapped with a fine from $167, which I ended up appealing to the High Court.
Well, the decision finally arrived today. According to the paperwork, the proceedings were initiated back on June 24, 2005, but they claim a final ruling was issued on May 19, 2007—effectively denying my appeal.
My question is this: Is it actually possible that I've been waiting nearly three months just to receive this, or is this how they handle statutes of limitations? What kind of moves can I make here? Is there any way at all to dodge the penalty? Thanks in advance to all the brilliant legal minds out there!😉

If you actually bothered to read everything, you would’ve noticed the statute of limitations is two years from the offense—which isn't just mentioned in this thread, but is also right there in the stickied post. For crying out loud, just follow the INSTRUCTIONS—read them before starting a new topic.
