Does anyone know how much the court costs run if the Supreme Court of the United States actually decides to hear an appeal and then just tosses it out?

Roger Evans said:So, the violation happened back in late July 2006—I'd slightly puffed up my 🙈.... I filed an appeal within the 8-day legal window, and since then, I haven't heard a peep from the court. I've moved twice in the meantime, changing my address both times.

Now, the cops have already shown up at my current address twice—I'm assuming they were trying to serve me a summons, but I didn't get it.

Since the statute of limitations is only about two and a half months away, I’m wondering what the move is here. Should I just take the summons, head to court, and fight the ruling? Or should I just stay under the radar for another two months? Honestly, I'm a little worried they might issue a warrant and catch me off guard somewhere.

Thanks. 🙂

Did you officially report your change of address? I believe if you move, notifying the authorities is mandatory. I guess I am not entirely certain, but maybe you even need to notify the court directly about it. I don't recall the specifics perfectly, but I know from some paperwork I once received regarding a similar alcohol-related matter that it was mentioned there; perhaps you could find those documents and re-read them. I apologize if I am misremembering anything.

A friend of mine was riding her bicycle on the road the other day—just about fifteen feet away from a dedicated bike lane—without any lights on. She ended up getting pulled over by the police, and it turns out she blew a 1.11 BAC.
I guess I was wondering if anyone here might know what the maximum penalty could be for something like this, and perhaps what the best course of action would be for her to take right now.
☕🤷Thanks!

Here’s the situation: a friend of mine has his motorcycle registration expiring today, and I suspect several others—myself included—are wondering about the same thing. I’m trying to figure out if you can actually legally operate a car or a bike for an extra 15 days once the registration lapses. The FBI's guidelines seem a bit contradictory if you read them closely, for instance:

9) A driver operating a motor vehicle, excluding tractors and heavy machinery, that is unregistered or has had its registration expired for more than 15 days, shall be subject to a fine of at least $333.

(10) A fine of $167 shall be imposed on drivers operating tractors or heavy machinery that are unregistered or have expired registration, as well as drivers of other motor vehicles whose registration has been expired for up to 15 days.

(1) A vehicle owner who fails to renew their registration within 15 days of expiration is required to decommission the vehicle, return the registration and license plates to the local police department or station where the vehicle is recorded.

I always heard that according to policy, you could still drive for 15 days as long as your insurance coverage remains intact, but based on the text above, it sounds like my friend would technically be committing an offense and facing a fine $167
Could someone please clarify this for me? Thanks.

Man, that's heavy. But since they caught her, she might get off with a lighter penalty.

There aren't any extra fees involved here; based on how this whole thing played out, the lower court's ruling stands, which means those original costs mentioned in the decision are exactly what we're looking at...

Does anyone actually get how the public right-of-way corridors in local zoning plans square up with the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards?
Yeah, obviously—it's a total mess...😠

So, I just got slapped with a citation because back on February 7th, 2008, I crossed the street where there wasn't a crosswalk... (I was near Lincoln Center, walked out of the dorms, and headed toward the bridge). I cross the street just like ten other people ahead of me, and suddenly, out of nowhere, these two guys in blue shirts pop up :-). I try explaining that I'm just a college student and I'm totally broke... they ask for my ID, scribble some stuff on a little notepad, and tell me everything will be fine... but nope, it's not fine :-)
Is there any actual chance I can get out of paying this? An appeal or something?

  1. Slim chance.😁
  2. Write something if you can actually draft up something smart😁 But don't count on the statute of limitations kicking in until like 2012.😁

That’s $100 if I remember right? Honestly, I’d rather just find a way to cough up those $100 than deal with the headache of a courtroom battle. I know plenty of people around here who went to court over a measly $100$167. Once you factor in legal fees and court costs, even if everyone thinks the judge lowered the fine, they end up paying the full amount anyway—if not more...

Damn, they train that kind of strictness in San Francisco too... I have to look three times before I even move an inch.😠

Look, I totally get punishing idiots who force everyone else to slam on their brakes, slow down, or swerve around them. That's fair. But punishing people just because they took advantage of a clear road when there aren't any other cars around? That's just stupid. But hey, what can you do? Some cop just looks you in the eye and tells you: "It's the law, and you gotta follow it!"🙏

I agree with that... but I passed through there without putting anyone at risk... not another car, not even myself... the cops know people pass through there, so they probably just showed up to hit their daily quota... now I'm out here checking three times too 🙂

Measure out 50 meters first, then cross the street 😁 (if I remember the laws correctly, you have to use the crosswalk if it's within 50 feet in the city, or maybe 100 feet outside the city limits?)

I’m hoping someone here can shed some light on this...🙂

So, I just received a notice for a traffic violation—apparently something I supposedly did back six months ago,
speeding...😕
The fine comes out to $167, and according to the notice, I was caught by a Microsoft/John Doe device...🤷..

Now, even if I actually did go over the limit, I don't recall being pulled over at all...😕..
How is it even legal for them to just mail out a ticket without stopping me first?
Where is the actual evidence?

It feels like some officer could just wander from driveway to driveway, jotting down license plates, and then just send notices straight to my house later on...🤷..

John Doe units just sit by the side of the road and record everything... there isn't any pulling you over like with old-school radar where a cop points the gun and flags you down if you're flying....
As for how to fight it or get out of it, just hang tight until someone who actually knows the law weighs in. 🙂

Hey everyone, I don't want to clutter things up with a whole new thread, so I figured I'd just ask here—does anyone know what the fine is if you're caught not carrying your driver's license?

$100, it's the exact same deal as if you didn't have a driver's license or a state ID

To be honest, I'm not even that worried about dodging the fine itself,
it’s more the sheer absurdity of the law that gets to me...😕
It makes zero sense, really...
And frankly—I’m not even entirely convinced I was actually breaking the limit in the first place..🤷
