If it fails twice, you’re looking at a double authorization. It still counts, though. See, when a reservation hits, the bank pulls those funds immediately—it’s just sitting there in limbo. The credit card company holds onto that cash until the merchant actually asks for it, or until the hold expires and it finally trickles back into your account. 🤔

But the seller actually messaged me saying THAT order was canceled.
So, I tried paying with my card twice—and both times it just threw an error at me.
I decided to wait a bit to see what would happen with the order, and within half an hour tops, the seller emailed me to say it was canceled.
(Since, obviously, the payment didn't go through).
After that, I just placed a new order and paid via PayPal.

The thing is, those two failed attempts are still sitting there somewhere... showing up on my Mastercard. And I'm pretty sure it's not just some temporary hold.

By the way, it’s using Stripe—I just double-checked.
Stripe isn't even working properly today, for example, on AT&T—I tried buying a gift card with my Mastercard too, but it wouldn't even redirect me to the Stripe page. I checked the chat and found out the issue is on Stripe's end.

Something is clearly broken over there...

Anyway, I guess I'll just see what happens tomorrow...😉

Look, it’s not like the merchant is actually holding your cash hostage. When you go to swipe your Chase Mastercard, what’s really happening is that Mastercard gets an order to verify that you actually have, say, $33, effectively earmarking those funds from your account. They’re just making sure you aren't bluffing about having the money. After that, they sit tight waiting for the seller to give the green light that they actually want the payment before passing it along. There's always some kind of payment processor acting as the middleman in the whole dance. If things go sideways—and let's be honest, they usually do—Mastercard doesn't necessarily pinpoint the exact glitch immediately. So, just to play it safe, they tend to hold onto that money for up to 30 days—meaning they've already pulled it from your balance—before they finally decide to drop it back into your account.

It was an error—a total mistake on their end (there's no actual hold on my funds or anything). My bank told me they'd get back to me with instructions on how to handle it next...

My bank is basically telling me I have to chase down the merchant myself for a refund, but the seller is just ghosting my emails.

Honestly, I’m about two seconds away from taking this whole mess to the press.☕

I was grabbing some tickets at Ticketmaster this past Saturday using Stripe—different card though—and ran into the exact same issue you did. But I just got an email from them explaining they were hit by a DDoS attack, which caused all the transactions to fail.

"Dear Customer,
Due to a DDoS attack this past Saturday, our Stripe services experienced significant disruptions. Please note that the target of the DDoS attack was not ticketmaster.com.
We apologize for any inconvenience. Attached is a confirmation from the Stripe app regarding the cancellation of your transaction.
Please check your bank statement for updates."

Your best bet is to just reach out to Stripe directly.

I actually placed my order back on October 23rd.
But thanks anyway—I'll reach out to them and see what's up.

Does anyone know how long it usually takes for a card to actually show up at your door after you've set everything up with the bank?

Hey everyone—is it actually possible to pull cash out of an ATM using a Chase Mastercard? I noticed I still have some remaining limit $1.00 left, so I'm assuming it just automatically splits into monthly installments over the year—like 12 payments $83 = $1000 total.
