Just finished the meeting regarding preschool enrollment. In short—no spots left in daycare. Apparently, there are too many parents with multiple kids who opted out of the recent subsidies, so they’ve shrunk the group sizes to meet certain standards.
The only real shot we have at getting in is if New York City decides to start overcrowding the classrooms like they used to.
That’s a long shot, though, since we both work full-time. They basically hinted that our chances are zero—which is a ridiculous argument, considering how are you supposed to actually find a job if you have nowhere to leave your kid?

Of course, this is all just off-the-record chatter—thanks to GDPR, everything is kept strictly under wraps.

Well, the problem is that someone trying to follow the rules to a T would have to swallow their pride and actually demand that kind of mandate in writing. 😁

I honestly don't doubt it'll happen eventually; it’s just that Eric Adams will probably play dumb for a few more weeks, whining about all the mess he inherited from the previous administration... :-P

Word on the street is that during one meeting, Eric Adams actually asked Donald Trump to let each local school district set its own educational standards, but apparently, Donald Trump didn't even blink. 😁

Three days behind schedule, so I have to wonder when they actually plan on showing up.

The real question is whether anyone in charge actually possesses a functioning thought process. I was walking over to the Walmart near Brooklyn yesterday, and the scene was nothing short of a disaster—every single trash bin was overflowing, surrounded by literal mountains of discarded bags. To be fair, I can't recall a single time when things looked any better than this.
What we have here is essentially a growing landfill of bulky waste. We’ve had a sanitation officer assigned to this area for what feels like an eternity—at least a month now—and yet, absolutely nothing has changed. If they hadn't ignored the buildup a month ago, we wouldn't be staring at a pile three times its original size today. It seems even you felt compelled to toss that armchair, or whatever else it was, onto the existing heap.

I find myself wondering the same thing.

The way things work is—quite frankly—much more efficient when they come by multiple times a day to haul off the valuable scrap like old refrigerators, batteries, radiators, and other useful junk, rather than just dealing with this regular trash... 🤣

The whole sanitation system has been a mess for years; people are just finally starting to make noise about it now.
I hear they barely show up in certain neighborhoods, yet right here near Manhattan, they’ve shown up two days in a row just to empty bins that aren't even full.

It might just be because someone of importance lives in your neck of the woods 😉

I can't quite put my finger on why, but even at my place, things have been remarkably orderly so far; they show up right on schedule, as predictable as a Swiss watch.

I don't think they’re being loud just to spite the current administration; rather, it feels like Bill de Blasio passed away at the absolute worst possible moment, just before everything started falling apart. The current leadership hasn't exactly handled the transition with grace, especially since waste management is the most visible metric of success and should have been their top priority. To make matters worse, their current director didn't exactly leave a glowing track record at his previous job.

So, I’ve settled into a bit of a routine with my weekly trash pickups lately. My buddies over at SES in Kraljevac mentioned they didn't even bother showing up for last week's collection. Honestly, I am dreading seeing this month's bill—I have a feeling they’re going to try and charge me for eight separate pickups... 🤦

Oh, for sure. And man, you can really see how much the prices have jumped lately. Plus, it feels like they'll probably just cut services in neighborhoods where they don't have much political clout anyway, which is pretty typical.

I feel like people should just storm the New York City Council every single time they miss a pickup. Maybe then those "experts" could actually figure out how to fix the mess.

Rather than reversing that downward trend, they’ve essentially ignored any semblance of balanced urban development, leaving us in a position where they wouldn't even hold their previous strongholds a year ago.

It isn't even a matter of malice; they are simply incompetent, coupled with a level of arrogance that makes them utterly useless.

P.S. I'm watching a worker from the NYC Parks Department trying to patch together some grass right outside my building, but it hasn't even begun to take root. 😕

Meanwhile, the blackberry thicket encroaching on our little local park is left completely untouched—presumably because the land belongs to the federal government, which has zero interest in maintaining it. I even spotted two little foxes lurking in there, which suggests they've made it their permanent residence.

I find myself wondering: is it really such a monumental task to tidy up a space and send the bill to the state?

For me, it’s this massive plot of private land the bank snatched away six years ago, and apparently, New York City is supposed to be the one looking after these overgrown patches of nothingness.

I spent the first two years out there doing all the work myself on my own dime, but once I finally threw in the towel, the neighbors just kept nagging the city workers with zero results.

The ragweed doesn't bother me much, honestly. Between the pack of my neighbor's Extra Extra Extra Large cats patrolling the area—which keeps the pests away—and the fact that I stay on top of the tick treatments for my dog, I can actually just sit back and enjoy the quiet and the smell of the woods.

It’s essentially a paradise for mosquitoes, too. A city shouldn't be footing the bill for maintaining someone else's private property, but they ought to at least issue an order or send the owner a bill. Instead, the code enforcement officers seem completely toothless; they can't even give me a straight answer—I couldn't manage to extract a single coherent explanation from them. It reminds me of my father's property out in the Hamptons; the local inspector just threatens him with a fine until he cleans up the lot, and that's the end of the conversation.

So, you mentioned you've been tending to the plot yourself because the inspector suggested it, or perhaps suggesting we hire some crew to handle the heavy lifting. Believe me, I would if I could, but I simply can't afford to shoulder that cost alone. Besides, I wouldn't dream of touching it right now—there are a few foxes making themselves quite comfortable in the brush.
