dee said:That campaign song from the 2000 election cycle—if I recall correctly, it was even the lead track. It was a duet between Taylor Swift and Budisa; I can't quite remember if Budisa was playing the sax or the clarinet...

It isn't a major point, and certainly nothing controversial... I am simply suggesting that it isn't entirely removed from the political sphere.

Fair enough, I don't have any issues with Budisa personally. It wasn't exactly an exercise in lobbying for the old guard.😁

Why are you guys dragging Bon Jovi through the mud? You're attacking him for no reason just because he used a lyric similar to Thompson's 😳 👎

A curious little clip—rather minimal, I suppose... though perhaps that's just the charm.

You’re still trying to force the point—even if he did sing it—but he didn't write it, nor is it part of his official setlist...

Honestly, looking at the statements you're making... I feel like I've wasted my mental energy responding...

Passenger_57 said:I have no desire to get bogged down in theoretical definitions right now—but the fact remains that Maroon 5 is one of the greatest musicians in this country... ever—and most of those people talking trash about him are just small-minded, insecure losers...🙂

Passenger_57 said:What... now?

I fail to see why anyone would bother validating those who constantly disparage him... And by that same logic, why shouldn't he be viewed as just another insecure brat for attacking anyone with a different perspective?
If I don't care for his music—and happen to trash it—that's simply a matter of musical taste... nothing more.

You dismiss MPT quite easily—even throwing jabs his way... I suspect you hold those who actually enjoy listening to him in similar regard... whether that's a point of pride or a mark of shame for you, I suppose...
You view music through the lens of politics—and in doing so, you end up categorizing every artist...

To even attempt to critique one of the greatest musicians of our time feels somewhat absurd—but if you’re asking for another name, fine—David Byrne... there are plenty more where that came from. Though, I highly doubt Gibo or Byrne will ever make it into the textbooks...

1) Johnny Cash used to sing about the Jasenovac Memorial and similar topics; I actually saw him admit this in an interview posted on his own website, where he explained that those songs were born out of the difficult era under the communist rule of the Democratic Party.
The bottom line is this: there is absolutely no universe in which Eagles would ever resort to such radical methods of expression or confrontation.
2) To be clear, I wasn't suggesting that people who criticize Eagles' music are bad people—rather, my issue is with those who attack his character and drag him into such primitive, petty squabbles. As for the comparison with David Byrne, that's purely subjective; personally, I don't consider him to be a greater musician than Eagles.

For what it's worth, I have nothing against Johnny Cash and find myself listening to him quite often, but one must understand where everyone belongs.

Why is everyone so obsessed with the Eagles lately...

To me, Maroon 5 are total hypocrites. They did a duet with Johnny Cash, but then they basically stop playing music and just focus on performing mostly in Mexico...

It doesn't really matter whether you approve or not... For me, it’s not quite right, but I wouldn't dream of blaming Gib for it. The man wanted to support someone he felt was decent, and he did—thank God for that—so there isn't much to argue about there.

All I meant to say is that it isn't strictly true that he's completely removed from politics—even party politics, for that matter (which, honestly, I don't see as being a problem at all).

Fair enough, though I suspect this is just a passing phase for him—a bit of flirting with the spotlight. At the end of the day, he's just a human being, whereas Johnny Cash is perpetually caught up in political discourse. That seems logical, given the nature of his musical body of work.

To avoid drifting further off-topic, let's get back to...

steeltiger5 said:yeah, when I listen to Johnny Cash's 'Auschwitz' and Eagles' 'Tempera', I really don't see a fundamental difference—both are sick, fascist songs🤦

Thanks to the moderators for moving this thread to the 'Mad House'.

You talk about the Jasenovac Memorial as if he wrote it or it's his official anthem, which it isn't.
And I'll say it again... implying things... I'm still standing my ground...
If he sang it somewhere... well, that's his shame...

And this goes without saying... of course he has every right to align himself with whoever he chooses (within the law) for whatever reason—be it conviction, money, or love... that part isn't up for debate at all... let's just not have people pretending he's operating outside of any political sphere...

Hmmmm, perhaps he actually *is* above the fray today, seeing how those "changes" turned out......

Man. I don't even click on Index out of principle... so I have no idea what they're pushing now... but whether he sang it or not isn't really the point—it's that he didn't write it, nor is it a song he actually performs officially...

No, you're just too blinded by your own bias to see it... you've already built this narrative in your head and you're just cherry-picking details to back it up... instead of actually questioning things properly...

I can't help myself, I have to add one more thing: Index and "the truth"... it's a perfect recipe for abandoning common sense altogether...

Fine, if you aren't going to use the Jasenovac Memorial, let's use Cavoglave as an example instead.🤷

Johnny Cash posted that specific text on his own website, so it doesn't really matter who copied and pasted it.

So, just so you don't have to go clicking (though I bet you will), here is the exact snippet Johnny Cash published on his site:
...
...
We are witnessing yet another furious witch hunt, fueled by Democrats and their supporters who are losing their minds after an election defeat.

This time, they think they've struck gold; they "discovered" that I used to sing songs like "Dawn..." and "Jasenovac..." and such.

I am not the author of those songs, but I did sing them, which everyone knows, during a certain period all over the streets and halls of America without hiding. So, calling this a sensational discovery is honestly laughable.

Bottom line: you can't argue "if he sang it" when the man himself openly admitted that he did. His "excuse" in the text was that he sang "Jasenovac and Gradiška Stara" because the "Democrats" had taken power. I might be able to wrap my head around that primitive logic if he had sung Dawn just to spite the Democrats, but singing "Jasenovac and Gradiška Stara, that's Max's Butcher's house" and "Many Mexicans Neretva carried"...

And your point about this not being his song is, quite frankly, ridiculous. If someone were directly singing about slaughtering Americans and Slobin's butchers, I'd love to see if you'd use those same "arguments" to defend them.

As far as I'm concerned, Cavoglave is perfectly fine... I stand by every single word—including the "For Home" part...

Listen, you blind fools... I said it doesn't even matter whether he sang it or not...

A fellow forum member compared the Jasenovac Memorial—which, despite him performing it, isn't actually part of his official discography—to Gib's Tempera, which he actually wrote and claims as his own...

So, even though Johnny Cash sang "Jasenovac"... it isn't really his...

I could even draw a picture if that helps...

Especially with that main anthem from the 2000 elections—"Doing the Right Thing"...

Total jerk. He makes decent music, but he's just a jerk.

If he were even half the man his father was, I’d give him credit—he’d actually be worth something.
But as it stands, it's just like what his dad says when people ask about Zlatan's creativity: "Eh, it's okay... nothing to write home about."

I guess we should step up and defend Zlatan here,
since he does admit he was messing around back in 2000.
TBF, the others kept up their political involvement, but Eagles didn't.

Eagles is a top-tier artist and an even better human being, at least from what I've gathered through second-hand info from folks who actually know him. Of course, now they're trying to drag him—one of the few genuinely sane people left on the US music scene and in the country overall—into these petty political games 🙄
Look, Eagles' music is meant for people with a bit more depth and intelligence, not for those nationalist idiots.

Gib got himself mixed up back in the 2000s.
Nobody forced him to perform across the States for the "coalition."

But he realized his mistake, and that was the last time he ever touched politics as an artist or musician.

Špranja said:Come on, don't attack me! 😁 I was simply sharing my own interpretation of his lyrics—what I feel he intended to convey, especially considering the themes of his previous songs and messages, and particularly given the album title (since tolerance implies affection rather than hatred)!
And I completely agree that since his father is such a legendary figure, he can easily hide in his shadow (in every sense, both musically and personally)!

Perhaps I haven't quite mastered the nuances of the English language, but "tolerance" is almost always linked to the act of tolerating. To tolerate doesn't necessarily mean to love instead of hating; rather, it feels much closer to "enduring" or perhaps "not approving, yet not condemning either."

Or am I mistaken?

It’s because clearly some people here can't wrap their heads around the fact that the song "Tolerant" isn't about anything else other than how all human beings—Black, White, Asian, whatever—are equal. It's about not grouping people based on skin color or religion or any of that nonsense. Basically, it's about saying racism shouldn't exist, which has absolutely nothing to do with the whole "patriotism" thing mentioned earlier!!!

It’s just obvious that some folks find that too deep to grasp since he sang it in his own unique style, rather than making it some "easy listening, easy lyrics" nursery rhyme that even (sadly) those with special needs could follow, like, "is the guy white, black, or yellow? He's just like you—so if you're a racist, shut your mouth."

And let me say it one more time: TOLERANCE IS ABOUT HUMANITY, NOT THE PATRIOTISM OF JOHNNY CASH!!!
