The "one person" problem in competitive sports

It’s honestly wild how one person can just enter a competition and completely change the math for everyone else. You can be the best in the world, but if there’s one outlier in the mix, the whole podium looks different. Does anyone else feel like it's almost demoralizing when a single dominant athlete shows up?
